ABRSM
Syllabus title - Grade
6Istvan Szelenyi
(1904-1972) has written a
number of pieces for
violin with piano
accompaniment which
capture a wide range of
moods. Joy, sorrow,
light-heartedness, and
exaltation can easily be
experienced by young
violinists through these
works. Hungarian folk
music elements are
overshadowed by melodies
and harmonies
characteristic of
late-Romantic music, and
this has added to the
popularity of these
pieces.

Composed
in 1876, Dvorákâ??s
only piano concerto has
been overshadowed by his
other two concertos, for
violin and violoncello,
respectively. Performers
and editors have often
attempted to upgrade this
pianistically unassuming
work by adding
stylisations of their
own. Our Urtext edition
revaluates the sources,
frees the work from
subsequent interventions
and presents it to full
advantage in its
authentic
form.
The
principal source of our
new edition is the first
complete print issued by
the publisher Hainauer in
1883, which has been
meticulously collated
with the autograph. The
anonymous original piano
reduction is so full of
mistakes that editor
Robbert van Steijn
decided instead to
present the version by
Karel Å olc.

Franz Liszt was
one of those composers
who permanently altered
the musical culture of
the 19th century.
However, his sacred vocal
works are still
overshadowed by his piano
music. Pioneering
elements - which Liszt
always knew how to
combine with a simple
tonal language which was
appropriate - are,
however, to be found
particularly in his
smaller sacred works.
Hans-Joachim Lustig and

selection of this music
that is well worth

doing, give us

During her
lifetime, Fanny Hensel
was overshadowed by her
brother Felix Mendelssohn
Bartholdy, who was three
years her junior, and for
a long time she was
regarded merely as an
occasional composer. It
was only when the
Mendelssohn Bartholdy
family's extensive
collection of sheet music
came into the possession
of the Berlin State
Library that the
diversity of her
compositional output
became apparent: all
together, Fanny Hensel
wrote over 400
compositions, including
piano pieces and
especially songs, mostly
for solo voice with piano
accompaniment, but also
many choral works,
chamber music and some
orchestral works. The
name SAM-Klang takes the
three voice parts from
the arrangements --
Soprano, Alto and Men --
and combines it with the
Scandinavian and German
words for
“sound†to
create the portmanteau
word “sound
together†or
“harmony.â€
The series offers basic
and advanced choral
repertoire. In addition
to new repertoire and new
arrangements, you will
also find essential parts
of the classical German,
Scandinavian, French and
English SATB repertoire,
carefully and
considerately reworked
for SAM. The arrangements
retain the characteristic
features of the original
movements and have almost
the same richness of
timbre, resulting in
works which sound nearly
unchanged to an audience.
Piano reductions of all
choral movements
facilitate rehearsal
preparation. The
arrangements offer
development opportunities
for all voice sections,
bringing new life and new
quality to SAM choir
work. SAM-Klang enables
youth choirs to gain
access to classical
choral literature and
ensures that mixed choirs
who face challenges in
finding singers for all
male voice parts continue
to have access to
well-loved
repertoire.

At times
Romantic, at other times
with a jazzy touch, the
Choral collection
Bruckner. Secular choral
music is full of exciting
discoveries and new
arrangements at various
levels of difficulty.
Anton Bruckner’s
secular choral music is
often overshadowed by his
great symphonies and
sacred choral works
– unfairly, as
choral experts Simon
Halsey and Jan Schumacher
prove with their small
but fine selection of
choral music inspired by
secular texts.
Bruckner left
only a few movements for
mixed choir; instead, his
music for male voices
constitutes a far larger
body of work. For this
collection, renowned
arrangers from Germany,
England, Denmark, and
Italy have specially
reworked the most
beautiful of these choral
movements for SATB,
enabling this great
repertoire to be
performed by mixed
choirs. Two original SATB
compositions are also
included. Furthermore,
the choral collection
features arrangements of
songs originally written
for solo voice and piano
with texts by such poets
as Heinrich Heine and
Emanuel Geibel. Another
highlight is an
arrangement of the Adagio
from Bruckner’s
String Quintet WAB 112,
which Heribert Breuer has
created for choir to a
text by Georg

Rediscoveri
ng, studying and
analyzing the musical art
of Philipp Joseph Hinner
means enhancing a piece
of the eighteenth-century
harp music mosaic.
Hinner's work intrigues
for its extraordinary
simplicity, for its
regularity and harmony;
the ordered balance of
the parts, symmetry and
sense of proportion are
essential elements for
the author, and give
character and unity to
his work. The harp
repertoire has long been
overshadowed by the
keyboard one, which
boasts extensive solo and
chamber literature, and
consolidated for over two
centuries. The
rediscovery of the
history of our
instrument, however, is
still recent and the
research work in the
field of harp music is
still long. Hinner,
with the apparent
simplicity of his opus
10, can thus regain his
role in the harp
repertoire of the
eighteenth century, as
well as covering a
considerable didactic
value today. The part of
the first harp
undoubtedly presents
characteristics of
greater rhythmic and
virtuosic complexity than
that of the second, which
consists of a continuous
accompaniment
interspersed with simple
thematic imitated
episodes. Furthermore in
the composition are
included arias such as
O ma tendre
Musette, a French
popular melody of the
18th century (previously
set to music by
Pierre-Alexandre
Monsigny), and <>, taken from
the opera-comique
L'erreur d'un moment
ou la Suite de Julie
by Nicolas Dezede, as
well as themes from
Gluck's Iphigenie en
Aulide, which had
been all used also by
Hinner's first harp
master, Francesco Petrini
(1744-1819). Hinner's
opus 10, originally
written in separate parts
for two harps, or harp
and fortepiano, is
presented here updated
and completed with its
score, for a thorough
perception of the
work.

Halfw
ay between opera and
musical, Olympe la
rebelle evokes the
path of a revolutionary
long overshadowed by
history books: in the
Declaration of the Rights
of Women and Citizen
(1791) Olympe de Gouges
courageously called her
“very dear

against the oppression of
which they were victims.
The libretto (Violaine
Fournier) features a
college class (teenager
choir) who, under the
guidance of their history
teacher (baritone)
decides to stage a show
to pay tribute to the
many battles fought by
this heroine of the Age
of Enlightenment
(mezzo-soprano),
especially against
slavery and the
inequalities women suffer
from. Animated by
Isabelle Aboulker's
radiant and catchy music,
the constant back and
forth between our era and
the revolutionary era
makes this opera an
outstanding life
lesson.

Alexander
Zemlinsky's music was
long unjustly
overshadowed by what was
regarded as the
“more
progressive†Second
Viennese School. Although
Zemlinsky was close
friends with its
protagonist Arnold
Schönberg, he never
did take the latter's
radical step into
dodecaphony. At the same
time, he composed works
that were no less
original or fully
fledged. Composed between
1913 and 1915, his Second
String Quartet in
particular pushed the
contemporaneous
understanding of form and
tonality to its limits.
With just one movement
but spanning over 1,200
measures, this
multi-faceted work
numbers among the most
significant contributions
to the genre of the time
and has long merited a
critical new edition. The
Urtext edition by G.
Henle Publishers corrects
many errors and
inaccuracies in the first
edition that came to
light after careful
comparison with the
autograph sources in
Vienna and Washington.
For the first time, too,
the metronome markings
that survive only in one
of Zemlinsky's letters
have been incorporated.
Editorial work was kindly

Bac
h's Cantata BWV 69a of
1723, which has remained
largely unknown to the
present day, is now
available for the first
time in a practical
edition with this Carus
publication. It has been
unjustly neglected as it
was overshadowed by the
Cantata BWV 69 of the
same name, a piece which
Bach reworked to
celebrate the
inauguration of Leipzig
Town Council in 1748. On
that occasion Bach
re-used the parts from
1723 for simplicity, and
adapted them for the new
use by means of cuts,
alterations, and
additions - something
which certainly did not
mean that he rejected the
1723 version. This
version can readily be
recovered from the parts
of 1723, if we explore
beyond the alterations of
1748. With its rich wind
instruments and great
opening chorus, the 1723
cantata is in no way
inferior to the later
festive music in terms of
musical splendor. The
text takes the Gospel
reading about the healing
of the deaf and dumb man
as a reason for praise
and thanks for God's good
deeds. In contrast to the
later version, in which
God is thanked for the
wisdom of the Leipzig
authorities, the original
version of 1723 is free
of such contemporary
references, and is
suitable for use in

As well as
the Mass in B minor,
there are four further,
shorter mass compositions
by Bach, the so-called
Lutheran or Kyrie-Gloria
masses. Despite their
high musical qualities,
they are often
overshadowed by other
church works by Bach.
With their six-movement
structure (up to the Cum
sancto spiritu) they had
their specific liturgical
position in church
services of the time of
Bach. The masses largely
comprise parodies, with
the original music mainly
taken from cantatas which
Bach sometimes
considerably reworked in
his well-known style
according to the new

As well as
the Mass in B minor,
there are four further,
shorter mass compositions
by Bach, the so-called
Lutheran or Kyrie-Gloria
masses. Despite their
high musical qualities,
they are often
overshadowed by other
church works by Bach.
With their six-movement
structure (up to the Cum
sancto spiritu) they had
their specific liturgical
position in church
services of the time of
Bach. The masses largely
comprise parodies, with
the original music mainly
taken from cantatas which
Bach sometimes
considerably reworked in
his well-known style
according to the new
context of the work.
Ulrich Leisinger has
edited the four works for
Carus in new critical
editions. Score and part
available separately -
see item CA.3123500.
