Carl Maria
von Weber's fame rests
mainly on 'Der
Freischutz'. The
unprecedented success of
this opera overshadowed
all his other works and
contributed to their
increasing fall into
oblivion. Certain works
such as 'Preciosa',
'Oberon', and
'Euryanthe', the
overtures, solo concertos
and piano sonatas, the
lieder and chamber works
enjoyed great popularity
and were widely known in
Germany and abroad as
late as the second half
of the 19th century.
However, any chance of a
revival of Weber's
influential and
substantial oeuvre was
wasted in the 1920s, when
a complete edition -
begun by Hans Joachim
Moser and with potential
contributors including
Wilhelm Kempff, Hans
Pfitzner, Max von
Schillings, Fritz Stein
and Richard Strauss -
failed after the third
volume.Ever since there
have been numerous
attempts to restart a
complete edition of
Weber's works, but as
this kind of project
would have required the
co-operation of scholars
from both sides of the
inter-German border, the
political situation after
1945 was not conducive to
any such enterprise.
Careful negotiations led
to the first tangible
steps in the 1980s. The
intention, right from the
beginning, was to place
Weber's work in context,
and not to separate his
musical output from his
influential work as a
writer, critic and
organiser in the musical
field, but to publish his
compositions together
with his letters, diaries
and other literary output
as the best way to
document the
cross-fertilisation
between his musical,
literary and practical
activities.Since the
German re-unification
both working-parties
concerned - at the
Staatsbibliothek zu
Berlin, and at the
Musikwissenschaftliches
Seminar,
Detmold/Paderborn - have
co-operated on the
complete edition of the
musical works (c. 45
volumes in 10 series:
sacred music; cantatas,
odes and other occasional
works; stage works;
lieder and vocal works;
orchestral works; chamber
music; music for piano;
piano reductions;
miscellanea, arrangements
and orchestrations; works
of doubtful attribution).
The diaries (6-8 vols.)
are edited in Berlin and
the letters (8-10 vols.)
and other writings (2
vols.) in Detmold. This
complete edition aims to
be a reliable basis of
scholarly debate as well
as for the authentic
performance practice of
Carl Maria von Weber's
music. Conforming to the
standards of recent
historico-critical
editions, the textual
material will be based on
all available authentic
sources, accompanied by a
detailed documentation of
the genesis and a list of
variants for each work.
The musicological
importance of the works
will be evaluated by
placing them in their
historical context, the
presentation of their
genesis, history and
Critical Commentaries.
The letters, writings and
diaries will be treated
as inter-related and
relevant to each other in
the commentaries,
therefore readers should
benefit from a wealth of
concise information and
cross-references.

Alexander
Zemlinsky's music was
long unjustly
overshadowed by what was
regarded as the
“more
progressive†Second
Viennese School. Although
Zemlinsky was close
friends with its
protagonist Arnold
Schönberg, he never
did take the latter's
radical step into
dodecaphony. At the same
time, he composed works
that were no less
original or fully
fledged. Composed between
1913 and 1915, his Second
String Quartet in
particular pushed the
contemporaneous
understanding of form and
tonality to its limits.
With just one movement
but spanning over 1,200
measures, this
multi-faceted work
numbers among the most
significant contributions
to the genre of the time
and has long merited a
critical new edition. The
Urtext edition by G.
Henle Publishers corrects
many errors and
inaccuracies in the first
edition that came to
light after careful
comparison with the
autograph sources in
Vienna and Washington.
For the first time, too,
the metronome markings
that survive only in one
of Zemlinsky's letters
have been incorporated.
Editorial work was kindly
supported by the
Alexander Zemlinsky
Endowment Fund in
Vienna.

Written in
1814, the Fidelio
Overture was the fourth
and final version chosen
to open Beethoven's only
opera by the same name.
Though not as lengthy or
grand as its three
predecessors (the Leonore
Overtures 1 - 3), it
served its purpose as an
opening statement without
overshadowing the music
to come. This string
arrangement transposes
the original key of E
Major into the much more
playable key of D Major.
It retains the original
opening which alternates
between powerful majestic
bursts and lyrical
harmonic progressions
while finishing with the
energetic presto to the
end. Rhythms have been
simplified but are very
much in the spirit of
Beethoven's writing. The
optional timpani gives
this arrangement a
symphonic quality that
closely resembles the

1875 is all
about plans for the
Bayreuth Festival. The
first half of the year is
devoted to completing the
vocal ensemble and
recruiting orchestral
musicians. Wagner is
forced to go on concert
tours to finance the
preliminary rehearsals.
The financial situation
remains strained despite
a loan from Munich. - The
new management of the
Vienna Court Opera offers
Wagner the chance to
rehearse sample
presentations of
Tannhauser and Lohengrin.
Late in the fall he moves
with his family to the
Danube metropolis for six
weeks. Overshadowing the
stay there is a legal
dispute with the
publisher Furstner about
performance rights to the
new Tannhauser scenes.The
volume contains 372
letters, 98 of which are
printed here for the
first time, and 23 others
published in their
entirety for the first
time.

When you say
Mascagni you immediately
think of Cavalleria
rusticana. This work
brought Mascagni
overnight fame after his
wife - without him
knowing - entered the
score in a composition
contest and it won first
prize. Cavalleria
rusticana became an
incredible success,
overshadowing the
premiere of his next
opera, L’Amico
Fritz. L’Amico
Fritz can still be
considered a successful
opera, with its
highlights being the
‘Cherry
Duet’ and this
intermezzo, arranged by
the Japanese
Kimura.
Cavalleria
rusticana spricht die
Sprache von Mascagni. Mit
diesem Werk wurde
Mascagni buchstäblich
über Nacht berühmt,
nachdem seine Frau ohne
sein Wissen die Partitur
zu einem
Komponistenwettstreit
eingeschickt und diese
dort den ersten Preis
gewonnen hatte.
Cavalleria rusticana
wurde zu einem
unglaublichen Erfolg, der
die Premiere der
folgenden Oper,
l'Amico Fritz
überschattete. Dennoch
ist l'Amico Fritz eine
gelungene Oper; zu ihren
Höhepunkten zählen
das Kirschenduett und
dieses, hier von dem
Japaner Kimura
arrangierte,
Intermezzo.
