The Missa
Dei Patris ZWV 19 was
composed in 1740 and
ranks among the later
works of the Bohemian
composer Jan Dismas
Zelenka. It opens an
incompletely transmitted
cycle of six masses which
the composer himself
designated as Missae
ultimae.The musical text
of the present
conductor's score is
based on that of Volume
93 of the Denkmaler
edition Das Erbe
deutscher Musik. The new
piano vocal score has
been edited by the
reputable expert Andreas
Kohs. Zelenka's artistic
personality, his
biography and his
compositional style are
utterly distinctive. His
style is highly
experimental. Was Zelenka
really one of the
greatest composers of the
18th century, or only one
of the most interesting?
I think that he still has
several surprises for us.

Puccini's
first known sacred work
was composed during his
school days at the
Istituto Pacini in Lucca.
It was first performed
there in 1877. The text
was a hymn to the Patron
Saint of Lucca which was
probably written by the
composer himself. The
work was so popular that
by 1880 it had received
three further
performances, though it
was also inserted in the
Messa a 4 voci, after the
Credo. Thereafter it
disappeared from the
music world and was only
first rediscovered in the
1990s. Since, with the
exception of the lack of
a solo tenor in the
piece, it is identical
with this one in the
Messa, for this reason it
would seem only natural
to perform these two
works together. Score and

In the south
German-Austrian region
the Pastoral Mass of
Johann Baptist
Schiedermayr was regarded
as one of the most
well-known and beloved
works in this genre.
Engaging melodies,
passages in thirds and
sixths, and typical
pastoral motives, such as
horn calls and open
fifths, the latter a
reminder of the bourdon
of bagpipes or a
hurdy-gurdy, characterize
the movements of the
Mass. Lyrical sections,
such as the Et incarnatus
est, which is the center
of Shiedermayr's setting
of the Ordinary,
alternate with festive
passages in which
trumpets and timpani
brilliantly express the
festive joy of Christmas.

Herrmann
Schroeder (1904-1984),
one of the most important
church music composers of
the 20th century, wrote
this Latin mass in 1961,
i.e. at the beginning of
the Second Vatican
Council. The Council
marked a turning point in
the field of church
music: Masses in the
respective native
languages gained more and
more acceptance,
Gregorian chant faded
into the background,
stylistic features of
popular music were also
taken up in church music.
Today, about 50 years
after the beginning of
the Council, one can see
a return to Gregorian
chant and polyphonic
vocal music, and this is
why even works such as
Schroeder's Latin Missa
melismatica arouse great
interest again. The work
takes the free intonation
of the Gregorian chant as
a starting-point and is
enriched with wide-spun
melodic arcs in elaborate
polyphony, according to
Schroeder's opinion that
Gregorian chant and
polyphony are
particularly suitable for
giving expression to the
mysticism and
irrationality of
religious faith in the
liturgy. A demanding work
for good choirs, duration
ca. 16 minutes.

During his
most productive period as
an opera composer,
Camille Saint-Saens also
wrote sacred works, among
which his Oratorio de
Noel has enjoyed great
worldwide popularity. The
colorful and opulently
orchestrated Messe de
Requiem was composed in
1878 in Bern. The
composer dedicated it to
his patron, Albert Libon.
We have published this
edition both with its
larger orchestral forces
and to enable perfomances
of the Requiem in
slightly reduced scoring
(without losing the
special characteristics
of the work), in a
version with a smaller
orchestra consisting of
11 winds, two harps,
organ and string
instruments. The full
score reproduces the
Urtext of the Requiem
with its original
scoring, whereas the
performance material is
presented and conceived
so to enable it to be
performed either in the
original orchestration or
the version with reduced
forces. Score and part

Carus-Verlag
is now publishing this
early work by Camille
Saint-Saens in a critical
new edition. Among the
sacred works by
Saint-Saens there are
just two settings of the
mass: the Messe de
Requiem op. 54 from his
middle period (1878), and
the Mass op. 4 dating
from 1856. This was first
performed on 21 April
1857. Camille Saint-Saens
was a devoted follower of
historicism as part of
the reform movement in
French church music. This
is more evident in the
mass published here than
anywhere else. The model
for this work is the
unison Messe Royale by
Henry DuMont (1610-1683).
Saint-Saens combined its
Gregorian style in a
convincing manner with
contemporary elements of
Romantic composition, an
expressive chromaticism,
which determines the
harmonic progression.
Alongside the orchestral
forces, the Grand Orgue
plays an important role.
Used as a solo
instrument, it is an
equal partner in the
composition. Score and

The hymn Nun
ruhen alle Wälder (Now
All Forests Rest),
arranged by J.S. Bach
(No. 6, So sei nun,
Seele, deine, from
Cantata BWV 13), is a
guiding light throughout
this four-movement
composition. Pütz
wrote this work as a
musical outcry against
the wilful, profit-driven
destruction of our
environment. When Bach
used the word
“ruhen†(to
rest) over 350 years ago,
it probably had a
different nuance from the
meaning it has today. At
the beginning of the 21st
century - the so-called
age of progress -
“nun ruhen alle
Wälder†should
mean “now all
forests die†.
Massive industrialization
and globalization,
coupled with pure greed,
corruption, political
scandals, an
ever-wideninggap between
the rich and poor, and
other such senseless
human actions, are
pushing our blue planet
closer and closer to the
point of no return. This
work is not intended to
be a ranting accusation.
It should remind us of
the beauty and harmony
that can exist all around
us in nature, if we take
care of it. Pütz
hopes that this will, one
day, help put a greater
emphasis on
humanity’s
survival, and coexistence
with nature rather than
the exploitation
described earlier. All
four texts were created
by Australian poet Graeme
King, whose works were
discovered by Pütz,
by chance on the
internet. Pütz was
especially captivated by
King’s clarity,
and intrigued by the
possibilities of adapting
and melding the strong
rhythmical structure of
King’s writing
with his own musical
language. The four
movements are as follows:
1. Tears of Nature 2.
Grrrevolution 3. Stand
up! 4. Tomorrow The world
première of Four Earth
Songs took place on 7
July 2009 at the 14th
WASBE-Conference in
Cincinnati (USA). This
work is dedicated in
friendship to Jouke
Hoekstra, conductor, and
the Frysk Fanfare Orkest
(the Frisian
Fanfare-Orchestra).
De hymne Nun
ruhen alle Wälder,
gearrangeerd door J.S.
Bach (nr. 6, So sei nun,
Seele, deine, uit cantate
BWV 13), is de leidraad
in deze vierdelige
compositie. Pütz
schreef het werk als een
muzikaal protest tegen de
moedwillige,op winstbejag
gebaseerde vernietiging
van ons milieu. Toen Bach
het woord
‘ruhen’
(rusten) meer dan 350
jaar geleden gebruikte,
lag er waarschijnlijk een
andere nuance in dan
tegenwoordig. Aan het
begin van de 21e eeuw -
dezogenaamde eeuw van de
vooruitgang - zou
‘nun ruhen alle
Wälder’ zelfs
kunnen betekenen:
‘nu sterven alle
bossen’. De
grootschalige
industrialisatie en
globalisering, in
combinatie met pure
hebzucht, corruptie,
politieke schandalen,een
groeiende kloof tussen
arm en rijk, en andere
dwaze menselijke
verrichtingen, brengen
onze blauwe planeet
steeds verder in de
problemen, tot er
misschien geen weg terug
meer is. Dit werk is niet
bedoeld als een
beschuldigendetirade. Het
moet ons wijzen op de
schoonheid en harmonie
die in de natuur om ons
heen kan bestaan, als we
er goed voor zorgen.
Pütz hoopt dat er op
een dag meer nadruk
gelegd zal worden op het
overleven van de mensheid
invreedzame co-existentie
met de natuur, zonder de
eerdergenoemde
uitbuiting. Alle vier de
teksten zijn geschreven
door de Australische
dichter Graeme King,
wiens werk Pütz bij
toeval tegenkwam op het
internet. Hij werd
getroffendoor Kings
helderheid en raakte ge
ntrigeerd door de
mogelijkheid de sterke
ritmische structuur van
Kings teksten om te
zetten in zijn eigen
muzikale taal. De vier
delen zijn de volgende:
1. Tears of Nature 2.
Grrrevolution 3.Stand up!

stammen aus der Feder des
australischen Dichters

This
cantata is a composition
by Kuhnau for the first
of the Christmas holidays
[Christmas Day] and one
of his most extensive
works. It is underlaid
with the free poetry of a
hitherto anonymous
author, not including any
Bible or chorale texts.
Though the dating has not
yet been clarified, the
structure - two
recitative-aria pairings,
framed by two magnificent
tutti movements -
indicates a genesis
period within the last
years of the composer's
tenure as St. Thomas
cantor in Leipzig.
Additional indications
are the triple use of the
da capo form as well as
the four-part vocal
setting, partly
differentiated in solo
and tutti, taking the
individual parts to the
limits of their ambitus
as was later customary
with Johann Sebastian
Bach.Particularly
noteworthy are two
details of the
instrumentation: Firstly,
there are three violin
parts in the score, the
first of which has to
master an exceptionally
virtuoso solo part.
Secondly, in the third
movement, Kuhnau
expressly notates an
obbligato organ solo
part, not to be found in
any of his other extant
compositions. This
virtuosic part also
already foreshadows the
later and far more famous
obbligato organ parts in
various Bach
cantatas.

Georg
Kreisler was an
admonisher, as strict as
he was understanding, who
saw his uncanny chances
in language and music and
used them to show his
fellow human beings many
possibilities of feeling
and thinking. The first
edition of Lieder and
Chanson sums up all of
these brilliantly
evil-spirited works by
Kreisler in several
anthologies for voice and
piano. Arranged in topics
such as death and
transience, surreal and
philosophical or politics
and public order, it
offers good access to his
work. Volume 7 completes
the topics Homeland and
Homelessness, Love,
Eroticism and Sex and
Discrimination,
Intolerance and
Anti-Semitism with songs
like My Home Is in Yemen,
The Love Letter, and The
Alien..

I fell
in love with the
remarkable singing of the
Tenores di Bitti on
hearing their recordings
as a student. Their
uniquely intense vocal
timbre, their harmony,
which seemed pure and
rough at once, and the
sense that this music
was, at root, not so much
about performance as
simply being together in
the world, in a community
of spirit. At the time, I
had no intention of using
this music to my own
creative ends, but now,
here we are: Sardinian
Songbook is the second in
a cycle of works for the
Ligeti Quartet, all based
on transcriptions of
music from different
throat-singing
traditions. Like string
quartets, the tenores
usually sing in groups of
four voices, but being
free from instruments
they stand very close
together enabling the
resonances of their
voices to blend and
interact in a special
way. The quartet, of
course, can only sit so
close before their bows
clash, so I have chosen
instead to reflect this
physical closeness
inversely, by getting the
players to stand
increasingly far from one
another as the piece
progresses. In so doing,
the initial state of
sonic blend gives way to
hocketing lines, opening
up the sense of
space.Christian Mason,
2018 The four movements
may be played separately
or as a collection. If
played together the
following order should be
observed (see table of
contents).

At the end
of every day, there will
be stars. Stars are the
inspiration for this
stunning concert work
that offers the
reassurance only nature
can bring. A lilting
piano theme weaves its
way through cascading
vocal lines that
seamlessly expand from
pristine unisons into
sumptuous sonorities.
Your altos will
especially love their
glimmering, glistening
interjections. Be sure to
observe notated dynamics,
which lean into several
well-approached
suspensions and taper to
twinkling
resolutions.
