Arrangeur: Matt Johnston. Par MORTELMANS LODEWIJK. Lodewijk Mortelmans was born in Antwerp on February 5, 1868, as second son of printer Karel Mortelmans. He died on June 24, 1952. He was an outstanding, universal Belgian musician and composer. His unique and poetic classical songs, his intimate and delicate piano music and his imaginative orchestral pieces rank among the European masterworks of the end of the 19th and the early 20th century. His Lyrische Pastorale, originally for horn and orchestra, has been arranged here for either Alto Clarinet (in E-flat) or Basset Horn (in F) and piano. He wrote a great amount of music for wind instruments, including many concerti and sonatas for flute, oboe and bassoon. The Sonata in F Major for bassoon and basso continuo, composed in four movements (Triste, Allegro, Andante, Vivace), was originally included in the collection Der getreue Musikmeister, dating back to 1728. Here, it has been arranged here for either Alto Clarinet (in E-flat) or Basset Horn (in F) and piano. While a student at the Ghent Royal Conservatory, he was awarded first prize for cello, harmony, chamber music, counterpoint and fugue, in addition to the Emile Mathieu prize for composition in 1930. His Nachtpoema for Horn and Orchestra (or Piano), was written in 1938, however the premiere took place towards the end of his life in 1962, with Maurice Van Bocxstaele as the horn soloist. Here, it has been arranged here for either Alto Clarinet (in E-flat) or Basset Horn (in F) and piano. Par MANTOVANI BRUNO. Da Roma témoigne des recherches que je menais en 2004 sur la notion de processus. Ecrite à la Villa Médicis, cette pièce fait suite au Cycle des gris pour orchestre sur instruments anciens ou encore aux Fées pour quatuor à cordes, oeuvres dans lesquelles j'ai tenté de construire un discours plus continu, moins fondé sur la rupture qu'auparavant. Si j'ai privilégié dans mon travail la confrontation entre des idées musicales antagonistes, je tente depuis peu d'introduire dans mon langage, toujours fondé sur l'énergie, l'idée de la transformation progressive d'éléments musicaux. C'est de la déformation progressive de la matière que naît le discours.
Le premier élément de l'oeuvre est un ostinato très lent du piano, un accord consonant répété et varié, sonnant comme un glas sur lequel les autres instruments agissent comme des ornementateurs. Les échappées mélodiques de la clarinette ou de l'alto occupent alors le premier plan, jusqu'à donner naissance à une idée plus instable qui supplante l'ostinato initial. Cette idée oppose un accord dans le registre grave et des arpèges descendants qui, bien que de plus en plus fréquents, laisseront la place à la répétition de l'accord qui leur est opposé, dans des transpositions progressives dans l'aigu. Pour rompre la périodicité de cet accord, une vague descendante fait son apparition, et à son tour, vient voler la vedette à l'idée précédente. Cette vague répétée est raréfiée progressivement, jusqu'à donner naissance à une pulsation régulière, contrariée par une pulsation plus rapide qui s'impose, elle-même contrariée par une pulsation plus rapide... Afin de sortir de cette logique de jeu de cache-cache entre les idées musicales, la section suivante s'impose par la rupture, et réintroduit l'harmonie du glas initial. La clarinette, dans un solo déchiré et disjoint, puis l'alto seul, réintroduisant un ostinato, prennent la parole pour conclure la pièce dans le recueillement.
