Robert James Lamb's
creative setting of this
early American melody is
sure to delight
listeners. Based around
the Westminster Quarters
change ring, which plays
in one form or another
throughout most of the
piece, the piece moves
from simple and prayerful
to grand and triumphant
and back. Much of the
melody is scored on a
separate staff for six
handchimes, which may be
played by a separate
chime choir or soloist,
or by a solo C
instrument. A delightful,
new take on a grand, old
hymn.

exposed opening is
punctuated by upper bells
mimicking the chiming of
a clock tower in James
Weber's expressive
arrangement of this
Christmas mainstay.
Flowing accompaniments
and lush, unexpected
harmonies abound. The
work builds in strength
and dynamic throughout
before dying away to a
gentle conclusion. A
fantastic addition to
both the handbell
literature and any
Christmas service or

Class
ic hymn tune, BROTHER
JAMES' AIR A memorable
earworm countermelody
unifies three stanzas of
the familiar hymn tune,
BROTHER JAMES' AIR. In
the middle minor section,
the melody moves to the
bass against thumb-damped
treble chords. Then, the
countermelody returns and
leads us to a final,
triumphant statement.
This compelling
arrangment assures us
that the Lord truly is
our Good Shepherd, making
it ideal for the Easter
season as well as general
occasions.

Tension builds into a

Tradition
al Welsh Hymn The
traditional Welsh melody
is here set in energetic
fashion. After some
sections of basically
chordal ringing a section
of marts and plucks
appears to add to the
lilting mood of the
entire work. Some
chromatic movement, but
the overall rating should
be an easy III.
