Balkanya, a

high-spirited suite takes

the river Weser, the
beautiful waterway that
meanders through Northern
Germany. With its
exuberant rhythms and
lyrical melodic lines,
the work mirrors the
strong bond between
theinhabitants of the
region and the river
itself. The connecting
thread is the melody of
the well-known ‘An
der Weser’,
composed by Gustav
Pressel to lyrics by
Franz von Dingelstedt,
which has been
incorporated in three
different ways. The
result is acomposition
that is sure to be
enjoyed by both musicians
and audience
alike.
Along
the Weser is, zoals
de titel al doet
vermoeden, een eerbetoon
aan de rivier de Weser,
die zo prachtig door het
Noord-Duitse land
meandert. In een jeugdige
ritmiek en met lyrische
melodische lijnen
verklankt het werk de
verbondenheid diede
bewoners met hun streek
langs de rivier ervaren.

The
Legend of Spirit
Island was
commissioned by the Twin
Ports Wind Orchestra,
Duluth, Minnesota (Mark
Whitlock, conductor), to
honour the euphonium
player, Dick Carlson. The
piece takes its title
from a local legend about
Spirit Island, which lies
in a gap of the St. Louis
River called Spirit Lake.
The legend tells the
story of Chaska, the son
of a Dakota Chief, and
Wetona, the daughter of
Ojibwe Chief Buckado. He
was handsome and she was
beautiful; it
wasn’t long before
they fell in love. This
is a challenging
euphonium solo in which
the versatile soloist can
explore very expressive
melodic sequences, as
well as energetic,
technical
sections.

the bloodbath during
World War II, the fabric

annual fair. Since Tulle
is also known for the
production of accordions,
the composer added an
‘ad libitum’
accordion part. A really
charming and stylish
concert or contest
work!

Skip James was one
of the most influential
early Bluesmen, but his
importance as a stylist
remained undiscovered
until he was brought out
of a long retirement by
the Folk/Blues revival of
the early 1960â??s. Born
in 1902 and raised in
Bentonia, Nehemiah Curtis
James was brought up in a
religious family: his
father was a bootlegger
who reformed and became a
Baptist preacher. Skip
learned piano in school
but picked up guitar from
his friend Henry Stuckey.
In 1931 Skip was picked
up by a scout for
Paramount Records and he
cut 26 tracks, of which
18 were released, in a
two day session at their
Grafton, Wisconsin
studios. These recordings
presented a unique and
haunting genius that
influenced legendary
bluesmen as Robert
Johnson, Kansas Joe McCoy
and Johnny Temple. But
the recordings sold
poorly, having been
released during the Great
Depression, and he
drifted into
obscurity.

seminal Blues
master.
After over 30
yearâ??s retirement from
music, Skip was
rediscovered by Blues
enthusiasts Bill Barth,
John Fahey and Henry
Vestine. They persuaded
Skip to appear at the
Newport Folk Festival in
1964, where his
renditions of his old
songs were still powerful
and moving. His
performances as well as
his old and new
recordings influenced a
generation of new
musicians: Eric Clapton,
Alan Wilson of Canned
Heat, Cream, Deep Purple,
Chris Thomas King, Alvin
Youngblood Hart, Derek
Trucks, Beck, Big Sugar,
John Martyn, Lucinda
Williams and Rory Block
to name a
few.

offer a subjective
perspective on how the
artists felt, thought or
reacted. A tainted

This suite was
written in the style of
traditional Russian folk
music, but does not use
existing melodies or
themes as its basis. The
colourful and varied work
contains a number of
surprising turns, but
also familiar sounds.
After the introduction, a
kind of Trepak follows ?
a fairly quick dance with
attractive themes. The
second movement (Garovot)
is predominantly slow and
conveys some melancholy,
although, during a more
dynamic passage the
passion flares up again.
Finally, the Troika takes
us along in a reindeer
sleigh through a grand
snowy landscape. This is
a wonderful tribute to
the music of Eastern
Europe in the style of
some of the great Russian
masters.

vertrauten Momenten und
melodischer Ausdruck
neben würzigen
Rhythmen: Das alles
steckt in der Seele
russischer Musik. Diese
klangfarben- und
abwechslungsreiche Suite
wartet mit einer Reihe
überraschender
Wendungen auf, enthält
aber auch vertraute
Klänge.
