Camille Saint-Saëns was justifiably proud of his Symphony No. 3 in C minor op. 78, dedicated to the memory of Franz Liszt. Like Beethoven’s Ninth, this so-called “Organ Symphony” was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society in London, where itreceived its premiere on 19 May 1886. In this first scholarly-critical edition of the symphony, a great many inconsistencies and mistakes inherent in the previously used edition have been unveiled and corrected. The edition of Symphony No. 3 marks the launch of a large-scale project: the publication of “Camille Saint-Saëns - Complete Edition of the Instrumental Works”. Symphonic poem after a poem by Henri Cazalis. Par SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE. Saint-Saëns was a great admirer of the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt. His own symphonic poem 'Danse macabre' reflects not only his affinity to medieval superstitions but also constitutes a tribute to Liszt's 'Totentanz'. 'Danse macabre' is based on the eponymous song Saint-Saëns composed in 1872 after Henri Cazalis' poem. At its premiere, the work was not well-received: in fact it was booed, possibly due to the 'diabolic' solo violin playing on an E-string that was tuned down to E-flat, which the audience might have misinterpreted as being out of tune. However within ten years the work had become so popular that Saint-Saëns quoted some of its musical themes in 'The Carnival of the Animals'. With his four works 'Le Rouet d'Omphale”, 'Phaéton”, 'Danse macabre” and 'La Jeunesse d'Hercule”, composed between 1872 and 1877, Camille Saint-Saëns decidedly put himself in the tradition of Hector Berlioz, who heralded a new epoch with his 'Symphonie fantastique” premiered in France 1830, as well as the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt, who established the term for this genre in Germany. During Saint-Saëns' lifetime the four 'Poèmes symphoniques” had become part of the repertoire all around the globe. They were recorded numerously - but the piece to hold its ground in the concert halls until today is 'Danse macabre” alone.
