One of
Scriabin's best-known
piano pieces is also one
of his very first
compositions. He wrote it
when he was only fifteen
years old; when it
appeared in print in
1893, the
twenty-one-year-old was
still so unknown that he
did not receive any
remuneration from the
publisher. The rapturous
etude was soon to enjoy
unprecedented success.
Marked “Andante”, it
is not a virtuoso piece
– but nevertheless it
is a challenge to master
the full-handed chords in
legato and to clearly
work out the upper and
middle parts at the same
time. In the Henle Urtext
edition, Boris Giltburg's
fingerings support this
task in an exemplary
manner. As an etude of
medium difficulty, this
earworm offers a
wonderful introduction to
the piano world of
Scriabin!

1. Choral: An
improbably superimposing
of Beethoven and Brahms.
At the end of the first
performance of the
latter's 1st Symphony,
someone asked the
composer: Don't you find
that your main theme
remin ds one of the Ode
to Joy? To which he
retorted: Even an idiot
would have noticed it! 2.
Fugue: in the last
exposition, the subject
of Fugue I from volume 1
of Bach's Well-Tempered
Keyboard is super imposed
on the theme from
Mozart's so-called easy
sonata. 3. Passion: In
his Violin Concerto,
Mendelssohn, to whom we
owe the rediscovery of
Bach's Passions, seems to
have borrowed a theme
from a lost Passion. 4.
Recitativo: Tribute to
Franck's tribute to Bach
in his Sonata for violin
and piano. 5. Invention:
A private revenge, after
a bitter failure.
Debussy's Toccata was on
the compulsory list for
the Conservatory piano
class entrance exam. 6.
Arpeggione: In which the
listener realizes the
similarity in the
introduction to
Schubert's Unfinished
Symphony and Arpeggione
Sonata. 7. Sarabande: The
most iconoclastic, for
Bach's 5th Cello Suite is
already suffused with
harmony. There might be
an evocatioin of a
Brahms-like overarching
structure, though... 8.
Variation: The slowest
variation ever written on
Paganini's 24th Caprice.
9. Scene: Schumann's
Reverie as a Prelude. 10.
Finale: In order to
capture the elusive
harmony of the Finale of
Chopin's Sonate Funebre.
11. Fugue on Au clair de
la lune: Our greatest
nursery rhymes, fugue
fitted and choralized.
12. Fugue de Noel
(Christmas fugue): Quite
appropriate. 13. Fugue on
J'ai du bon tabac:
Prohibited counterpoint.
14. Fugue on La
Marseillaise:
Franco-German
reconciliation. 15. Pedal
- Exercitium: Realization
and conclusion of Bach's
organ pedal exercies.

The toccata
genre has undergone great
change since BachÂ’s
time. Originally denoting
works of recitative or
improvisatory character,
since the 19th century
the emphasis has been on
a continuous pulsating
rhythm. In
ProkofievÂ’s
masterpiece, composed in
1912, this rhythm grows
into a hammering motoric
drive that dispenses with
developed themes or
motifs. That which seems
fascinating and
enthralling to us today
came as a shock to the
critics of that time. But
there were also
proponents such as
Prokofiev's friend
Nikolai Myaskovsky, who
wrote of the Toccata:
“It is a fiendishly
clever thing, edgy,
energetic and full of
personalityâ€.
Besides the printed
editions that appeared
during Prokofiev's
lifetime we also had the
autograph at our disposal
for this Urtext edition.
Yulianna Avdeeva, a
master of virtuoso piano
music, has been
responsible for the
fingerings.

Chopin
published his Scherzi
nos. 1 3 at more-or-less
regular intervals, in
1835, 1837 and 1840
almost as if he'd planned
them in advance. He
published his fourth and
final work in this genre
after a further three
years, in 1843. When
compared with its
predecessors, which were
largely bleak in mood,
this Scherzo no. 4 is
surprisingly cheerful.
With its sparkling runs
and its chains of chords
like dappled brush
strokes, this work seems
to summon up the
fairy-like spirit of
Mendelssohn's scherzi. In
editorial terms, however,
it is problematical.
Three parallel first
editions were published
in Germany, France and
England and the many
variants between them
have to be investigated
one at a time to
determine their
authenticity. This is a
task that has been solved
meticulously in this
revised, stand-alone
Urtext edition, which
explains the transmission
of this work in an
exemplary, transparent
manner for today's
pianists.
