this arrangement it is
possible to present the
work in a performance
space of limited size.
Haydn's original
orchestration is filled
with vivid tone painting
and this reduced version
represents Haydn's score
using accurate colors for
the obligato melodies and
appropriate instrumental
voices for the colla
parte passages. It
follows the format and
content of the critical
edition by Carus (ed. W.
Gersthofer) and may be
used together with the
other materials from
Carus 51.990 (choral and
vocal scores, string
parts). Modern
performances of Creation
use sometimes 50-60
players. It is hoped that
the present reduction
will make this beautiful
work available to smaller
groups, smaller
performance venues, and
groups with smaller
budgets. Score available

Harmoniemesse is the last
of the High Masses which
Haydn composed between
1796 and 1802 for the
name day of the Princess
Esterhazy, and at the
same time it was the last
composition which Haydn
ever completed. It was
given its name because of
the important role which
the wind instruments play
in the Mass. In a number
of passages the present
critical edition differs
from previous editions
and, consequently, it
follows other readings of
the sources. Hence it is
also to be regarded as a
contribution towards a
new evaluation of the
work. Score available

Latin. Following
his death, Pergolesi's
last larger composition,
the Stabat Mater of 1736,
immediately became one of
the most popular sacred
works of the late
baroque-early classical
era. Numerous
publications made this
icon of Italian sacred
music known throughout
Europe. It was arranged
by, among others, J. S.
Bach (Tilge, Hochster,
meine Sunden, BWV 1083),
J. A. Hiller and Abbe
Vogler. The most popular
arrangement was the one
made around 1800 for the
Vienna Court Kapelle, in
which Antonio Salieri,
Franz Xaver Sussmayr and
I. X. Ritter von Seyfried
added woodwind
instruments and obbligato
trombones to the string
accompaniment. In
addition the 2-part
texture of the upper
voices in the original
was arranged for 4 parts
with obbligato soli. It
was only in this opulent,
sonorous version, which
Otto Nicolai and three
composer colleagues
offered to 19th century
Viennese music lovers.
The piece is of medium
difficulty. In the
Viennese version it is a
rarity that offers an
enrichment to the
repertoire for choirs
wishing to discover
something new. $77.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks | | |

German/English. Text:
Luther,
Martin. Bach's
Reformation cantata,
based on what is probably
Martin Luther's most
famous hymn, evolved over
a period of several
years. At the beginning
was a Weimar cantata for
Oculi Sunday 1716, now
missing, which was based
on the hymn with an
instrumental quotation in
the opening aria and with
the final chorale. In the
Leipzig years around
1730, Bach wrote a
cantata for Reformation
Day using this material.
It began with the first
verses of Luther's hymn
in a simple four-part
setting and also included
the other verses. Later
on, in the 1730s or
1740s, Bach replaced the
introductory chorale
movement with a chorale
setting which was unique,
spacious and motet-like
in its style; this -
uniquely in this respect
- incorporated the choral
writing in an
instrumental canon for
oboes and organ continuo.
The powerful opening
chorus is followed by
recitatives and arias
which reflect the full
breadth of Bach's art of
word painting and
emotion. One of Bach's
most magnificent
cantatas, one of the
greatest works in the
history of music. In
addition to the complete
performance material the
arrangements of movements
1 and 5 (with 3 trumpets,
timpani as playing score)
by Wilhelm Friedemann
Bach are available (Carus
3108089). Score and parts
