In diesem Werk
widmet sich Jan Van der
Roost Schottland und
dessen berühmten
Hochland. In musikalisch
gekonnter Weise verbindet
er die charakteristischen
Eigenarten der
schottischen Volksmusik
mit seiner eigenen
kompositorischen
Kreativität. Mit der
Highland Rhapsody
gelang es Jan Van der
Roost, die Atmosphäre
dieser rauen, aber
wunderschönen
Landschaft einzufangen
und damit ein
einzigartiges Konzertwerk
zu schaffen, das Musiker
und Publikum begeistern
wird.

Rikudim (Hebrew
for “Dancesâ€)
is a four-part dance
suite based on Jewish
music. By using eastern
intervals and irregular
time changes, the
composer succeeds in
creating a slightly
melancholy but
specifically Jewish
flavoured piece.
Die vierteilige
Suite Rikudim
(hebräisch für
’Tanzen‘)
besteht aus von der
jüdischen Musik
inspirierten Tänzen.
Durch den Gebrauch von
orientalisch anmutenden
Tonintervallen und
unregelmäßigen
Taktarten ist es dem
Komponisten gelungen, in
dieser Musik einerseits
einen Hauch Melancholie,
andererseits spezifisch
jüdische Elemente
miteinander zu
verschmelzen. Die
deutlich bestimmten
Themen und die bisweilen
sehr überraschenden
und natürlichen
Harmonien bewirken, dass
diese stilisierten
Volkstänze ihre
Botschaft sehr direkt
vermitteln.

Hora
Est! (Latin for
‘it is
time!’) was
composed to bid adieu to
Sjoerd de Boer’s
following forty years as
conductor of the Chr.
Fanfare Band, based in
the town of Wjelsryp in
the Netherlands. In the
Netherlands, this small
phrase, hora est, is
traditionally said upon
awarding a university
doctorate at graduation
ceremonies. The
composition was written
with Sjoerd de Boer
firmly in mind, mirroring
various aspects of his
life. The main motif of
the work consists of
three notes, forming his
initials: S (Eb) D B. At
a certain point, the
music is interrupted by a
thunderstorm and heavy
rain (forever a bad omen:
the debut for this work
took place a day after
such a deluge, but
fortunately their
open-air concert was met
with clear blue skies.)
The fanfare then plays an
Italianesque march, with
the motif of de
Boer’s initials
interwoven throughout.
The work re-uses this
motif twice towards the
end of the piece as one
might expect, by the
saxophones to create a
festive, driven and
virtuosic atmosphere.
Finally, the work comes
to an end with the
initials motif played
across the ensemble in
complete unison. The
powerful closing chords
symbolise a fond farewell
to de Boer: a driven and
extremely capable
conductor whose musical
mark on Concordia will be
felt for years to come.
Hora Est! is
suitable as a contest
piece and would be a
definite highlight for
any upcoming
concert.

Deze wereldpremière
werd gedirigeerd door de
componist zelf. De
doedelzakstemmen zijn
optioneel,maar wel
wenselijk. Ze geven de
gehele compositie een
bijzondere klankkleur.
Dieses
eindrucksvolle Werk wurde

holländisch-friesische
Stadt Leeuwarden
geschrieben, die
Europäische

ist. In dieser Stadt
verbrachte der Komponist
seine Studienjahre. Sein
festliches Werk für
Dudelsack, Trommler und
Blasorchester basiert auf
der Hymne der Provinz
Friesland. Proud
wurde speziell für die
Veranstaltung
Grutsk“
geschrieben, was auf
Friesisch so viel
Stolz“ bedeutet und
somit den Titel des
Stückes erklärt.
Auf fünf verschiedenen
Bühnen im Stadtzentrum
führten es mehrere
Blasorchestern auf. Das
Finale bildete ein
Konzert auf dem

Welturaufführung wurde
vomKomponisten selbst
dirigiert. Der Dudelsack
ist optional, jedoch
empfehlenswert, da er der
Komposition ihren ganz
besonderen Klang
verleiht.

The
Ukrainian Bell
Carol is part of a
large choral work
entitled Shchedryk by the
Ukrainian composer Mykola
Dmytrovich Leontovych
(1877-1921). It was first
performed by students of
Kiev University in
December 1916. The tune
is an adaptation of an
old
‘shchedrivkaâ€
, a song traditionally
sung on Ukrainian New
Year’s Eve
(January 13th) which
hopes for good fortune in
the year to come. In
Shchedryk, Leontovych
added his own the lyrics
which concern the legend
claiming that when Jesus
was born, all the bells
on earth started ringing
in his honour.The tune
has since been the
inspiration of at least
four different Christmas
carols, but Philip Sparke
has sourced the
originalUkrainian melody
to create this stirring
arrangement.
De
Ukrainian Bell
Carol is onderdeel
van het grote koorwerk
Shchedryk van de
Oekra ense componist
Mykola Dmytrovich
Leontovych (1877-1921).
De melodie is gebaseerd
op een
‘shchedrivkaâ€
, een lied dat van
oudsher werdgezongen op
de Oekra ense
oudejaarsavond (13
januari). In
Shchedryk voegde
Leontovych de tekst toe
over de legende die
vertelt dat bij de
geboorte van Jezus alle
klokken op aarde begonnen
te luiden. Sindsdien is
deze melodiede
inspiratiebron geweest
voor ten minste vier
verschillende Christmas
carols, waarvan Carol
of the Bells de
beroemdste is. Voor dit
meeslepende arrangement
heeft Philip Sparke
echter de oorspronkelijke
Oekra ense
melodiegebruikt.

Ukrainian Bell

dell’opera corale
Shchedryk del compositore

Leontovich (1877-1921).
Il testo narra una
leggenda secondo la quale
le campane delle chiese
si sono messe a suonare
per annunciare la nascita
di Gesù. La melodia di
Leontovich ha ispirato
almeno quattro canti
natalizi diversi. Carol

versione più celebre.
Philip Sparke ha scelto
di ispirarsi alla melodia
originale del canto

realizzare questo
brillante

Christmas is
full of customs and
traditions, both old and
new. This is especially
evident in Christmas
songs, some of which have
been part of Christian
worship for centuries.
A Medieval
Christmas combines
three ancient melodies
that are stillpopular
around the world today.
Philip Sparke chose
Gaudete, a song of
praise from the middle
ages, Coventry
Carol, an English
song from the 14th
century, and In dulci
jubilo, which can
also be traced back to
the 14th century, toform
this joyous
suite.
Kerst is
een feest van tradities
en gebruiken. Dit komt
vooral naar voren uit de
kerstliederen die al
eeuwenlang een centrale
plaats innemen binnen de
christelijke cultuur. In
A Medieval
Christmas staan drie
oude melodieën
centraal diewereldwijd
nog steeds populair zijn.
Het zijn het middeleeuwse
loflied Gaudete,
het Engelse Coventry
Carol en het bekende
In dulci
jubilo.
Weihna
chten ist auch ein Fest
des Brauchtums und der
Tradition. Dies zeigt
sich ganz besonders in
den Weihnachtsliedern,
die oft schon seit
Jahrhunderten einen
zentralen Platz in der
christlichen Kultur
einnehmen. A Medieval

drei dieser alten
Melodien, die sich heute
noch weltweit
größter Beliebtheit
erfreuen: das
mittelalterliche Loblied
Gaudete, das
englische Coventry
Carol aus dem 14.
Jahrhundert und das
bekannte In dulci
jubilo, dasebenfalls
auf das 14. Jahrhundert
zurückgeht.
