This volume contains Liszt's earliest pieces written in a Hungarian style. The complete set of Magyar dallok / Ungarische National-Melodien [Hungarian songs] consisting of 11 items is published here for the first time in a scholarly edition. The composer began to write them resulting from his first return visit to Pest in 1839. The music of these pieces was partly re-used by Liszt at the beginning of the 1850s in his deservedly popular 15 Hungarian Rhapsodies. The Carnival at Pest was inspired by his second tour of Hungary in 1846 it was later re-worked as the 9th Hungarian Rhapsody. The present volume also contains the so far unknown very first version of the 1st HungarianRhapsody, and in addition two large fragments from the 1840s plus a number of album leaves. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English, and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes, makes this volume of the New Liszt Edition an important publication of immense scholarly value. Along with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a paperback version for practical use has also been published. This edition's contents are identical to those of the hardcover edition with the exception that the critical notes are not included.

Gliere's beautiful character pieces, Six Album Leaves from Op. 51 are from a larger collection of twelve originally written for Cello and Piano in 1911 while the composer was living in Berlin. The composer most likely was inspired by Schumann's versions which were unknown in Russia.
The pieces are full of eastern sounding melodies and exploit the singing nature of the Trombone. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly arranged six of these for advanced performers.

The term Doppler effect describes the aural phenomenon of pitch produced by a moving source changing relative to position, like a siren passing you on the street. Sean O'Loughlin uses this fascinating concept to construct an original composition that uses instances of this effect. A broad melody acts as a connective element in the piece, with a multitude of teaching opportunities for dynamics and musicality.
The term Doppler effect is defined as the shift in frequency of acoustic or electromagnetic radiation emitted by a source moving relative to an observer as perceived by the observer. Yes, it is when the siren comes at you at one pitch and leaves you at another pitch. I found this a fascinating concept to construct an original musical composition with. There are plenty of instances of this effect, but I also created a broad melody to act as a connective element to thework. There are also a multitude of teaching opportunities for dynamics and musicality.The opening material should be played very mysteriously and by exaggerating the dynamics. Make the change from p to f as big as you can. The whole opening section builds up to a big arrival at m. 15. From there, we're off to the races with a rhythmic version of the effect. Again, bring out the range of the dynamics for maximum effect. The main melody appears at m. 30 and should be played with much lyricism as a contrast to the pulsing rhythmic activity underneath. The rhythmic pulse evaporates at m. 38 to leave a warm chorale-like section. A big presentation follows at m. 46. The chorale-like section returns at m. 54. Keep that same warmth of sound as before. The next big event happens at m. 67, where the Doppler effect is in full force. Exaggerate those dynamics and bring out the ascending lines in the celli. This leads to a climactic arrival at m. 92 where the main melody is augmented with lush power chords supporting the sound. The rhythmic energy returns at m. 98 to drive the music to a heroic ending.

Prokofiev did not compose his Visions fugitives â?? 20 â??fleeting visionsâ? â?? in one go, but in clusters between 1915 and 1917, immediately before the Russian Revolution that compelled him to leave his native country in 1918. We know from his diaries that at least some of them owe their existence to extra-musical impulses. Thus several pieces were inspired by people close to him. Others impart his emotional reaction to the political situation with its menacing brutality. According to his own statement, for example, no. 19 â??was inspired by the events of February 1917 in Petrogradâ?, during the Revolution's first phase. Technically the pieces are not too demanding, and are also often used in teaching. They now appear for the first time in an Urtext edition that considers all the musical sources created during the composer's lifetime. In his preface, Prokofiev specialist Simon Morrison provides biographical context for the genesis of this fantastic piano cycle.
