Par PUAUD GAETAN. Compositeur, organiste et pianiste français, l'avignonais Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) étudie au Conservatoire de Paris avec Maurice Emmanuel, Marcel Dupré (orgue), Charles-Marie Widor et Paul Dukas. Organiste à l'église de la Trinité à Paris à 22 ans, il enseigne aussi à l'Ecole normale de musique de Paris et à la Schola Cantorum, et participe à la fondation du groupe Jeune France. Prisonnier au Stalag VIII-A à Görlitz durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il y compose son Quatuor pour la fin du Temps. Professeur d'harmonie au Conservatoire de Paris, il y rencontre Yvonne Loriod, qui deviendra sa seconde épouse et son interprête au piano. On retrouve dans ses oeuvres sa passion pour les rythmes indiens, les oiseaux, la synesthésie (concordance des sons et des couleurs) et la religion catholique.
