The only known chamber music by Gustav Mahler is a movement for piano quartet from his student days at the Conservatorium in Vienna (1875-1878). The present new arrangements by Ronald Kornfeil go some way to addressing this gap while they also enrich the repertoire with pieces that are very interesting and demanding in their own right. The composer's rich song output includes his Wunderhorn songs, the Songs of a Wayfarer, the Rückert songs, the Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) as well as movements from his symphonies and the Song of the Earth. This book includes a selection of pieces that best suit the sound of the flute while providing plenty of variety. The arrangements transform Mahler's songs from their original conception for voice and piano or orchestral accompaniment into a purely instrumental dialogue between two equally important instrumentalists. In most cases the colourful orchestral versions provide the starting point. The omission of the text also demands different compositional techniques to bring out the various effects between indulgent sweetness and grotesque irony.

Flute solos from the 18th century
In this edition, the Dutch flutist Rien de Reede undertakes a journey into the 18th century. The collection contains 34 works for solo flute, which have been selected with great care and edited according to music history aspects. Thus, the edition not only shines with a colourful compilation of solo works that stand out from one another in regard to their character. It is also as a historical testimony to the structural state of the flute at the time and the associated technical possibilities as well as the approach to composing for this instrument at that time.
In addition to a number of multi-movement works, Rien de Reede publishes a number of wonderful individual pieces. In terms of composition, they are often characterized by the use of arpeggiated motifs and themes, large intervallic leaps or the ideas of suggested polyphony. Harmonic playfulness, required virtuosity, and the seemingly omnipresent balance of registers provide a constantly renewing tension in the individual movements. Not all works can be attributed to a composer, often one can only speculate. Johann Joachim Quantz was born in Oberscheden near Hanover on 30th January, 1697 and died on 12th July, 1773, the highly esteemed court composer and chamber musician to King Frededck II of Prussia. His life's work was based on the fute. He taught the fute, which was to be become the fashionable instrument of the time, to the young Crown Prince, later King of Prussia. The present sonata is based on a manuscript in the Lower Saxony State and University Libraty at Göttingen. Aside from the Partita in A minor by Johann Sebastian Bach (HN 457) and the Sonata in a minor by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel (HN 555), it was also mainly Telemann's 12 Fantasias that enriched the solo flute repertoire in thefirst half of the 18th century. Telemann's cycle evidently had a great influence on the flautist's world. The composer had his Fantasias published in 1727 (he might even have engraved the edition himself). The work was soonconsidered to be exemplary and caught on. This edition is based on Telemann's print, which is also reproduced as a facsimile in the edition.
