commissioned me to make a
new arrangement of the
Hungarian-Romani folk
song Jarba, Mare Jarba
for their 2014 touring
program. Passed down
orally through the Romani
communities, this
beautiful folk song, with
text in a language called
Beas (beh-osh), speaks of
a deep longing to visit
one's homeland, a place
where the singer can
never return. Chanticleer
consists of twelve men
whose vocal ranges span
from low bass to high
soprano, equivalent to
the range of a mixed
choir of women and men. I
composed slow sections of
original material to
represent the singers'
longing to return home;
these are interspersed
with the folk song's
traditional fast
sections. The
incorporated shouts and
calls in the score are
typically found in the
performance of Central
European folk songs. I
hope you enjoy singing
this new version of
Jarba, Mare Jarba that
contains all of the vigor
and excitement of the
Chanticleer version.

Launch’ which ends

score of approximately 14
minutes comprising two
outer fast sections and a
slower inner section of a
dream-like character. The
work is directly inspired
by the film Le Voyage
Dans La Lune (1902),
written and directed by
the pioneering French
film-maker, Georges
Méliès. Méliès was
influenced by 19th
century interests in
science and discoveries,
as well as the science
fiction of Jules Verne.
At the same time his work
seems fantastic, surreal
and satirical. Some
critics point out an
underlying critique of
colonial adventuring. The
plot centres on a group
of astronomers who decide
to launch a rocket to the
moon containing a handful
of their number. They
reach the moon (famously
landing on the moon’s
face) and then encounter
a strange race of aliens,
whom they battle and
destroy. The return to
earth involves a dramatic
descent, a plunge into
the ocean and then
celebratory dancing. The
film inhabits a surreal
and dream-like space, and
uses an idiosyncratic
visual language which
transforms reality. This
inspired an active
musical response in my
own score, which is by
turns abrupt, smooth,
lyrical and violent, and
expresses something of
the strange shifting
surfaces and multiple and
layered tempos evident in
the film. The canons in
the horns in the first
scene reflect the intense
arguments of the
astronomers as they
consider the project. The
slower inner section is
inspired by the scenes of
the industrial City
viewed from its rooftops
by the astronomers. It
also expresses the wonder
of the astronomers as
they see the earth rise
from the perspective of
the moon after their
arrival there. The music
of the final section is
in places conflicted,
reflecting the violent
encounters with the
moon’s inhabitants. It
moves into a more
harmonious phase at the
close to match the
celebrations upon the
astronomers’ return
from their adventuring.
The music could be
considered to be a
surreal mini-opera
without voices, voicing
instead the characters of

owing a recent experience
on the jury of a guitar
competition, I noted with
great pleasure that
Giorgio Mirto, with whom
I had shared the role of
juror, wanted to
celebrate the experience
of the competition -
during from which we
discovered that we had
had a great affinity of
thought - with something
which could endure over
time and not evaporate as
often happens in short
and occasional meetings
between musicians. He did
it as a true composer,
which he is, and
dedicated to me a very
beautifully crafted Suite
to which I allowed myself
to collaborate at least
formally, by suggesting
titles for the four
movements. This is how
Suite n.1 was born, a
piece that does not
strictly respect the
formal rules of the
Baroque era, but
reinterprets and reuses
them in a new key. The
work's obvious late
Baroque inspiration led
me to find titles that
invited the performer to
delve deeper into the
work's aesthetic
inspiration. So I
suggested to Giorgio that
he title the four
movements with something
that linked their content
to four greats of the
18th century. German
masters. The prelude has
thus become from Eisenach
because of its sometimes
improvised Bach-like
atmosphere, the second
movement, vaguely
toccata, speaks an organ
language in the manner of
Buxtehude (who lived in
Lübeck), the slow
movement has a Handelian
quality - and Handel was
born in Halle - and the
last movement, far from
being a true Chaconne,
undoubtedly has the
latter's taste for
variation and ostinato,
typical traits of
Telemann who lived in
Magdeburg. The cities
that appear in the titles
are therefore indelible
to the authors cited.
Furthermore, one should
not think that the style
of the work is in any way
German, given that
Giorgio Mirto expresses
himself in a very joyful
language that synthesizes
modality with minimalism,
all seasoned with a a nod
to Pink's progressive
rock Floyd. or a Mike
Oldfield... The result of
this mixture of ideas,
inspirations and styles
is a work that personally
I never tire of reading
and rereading, for the
freshness that emanates
from it and for the
climate expressive which
rises, nourishing itself
with full efficiency. We
ultimately cannot ignore
that the note B, the one
which marks in a minor
way some of the most
expressive works of the
guitar repertoire, from
the study of Sor which
made generations of
students fall in love
with the guitar, until to
that of Frank Martin's
Four Pieces via La
Catedral di Barrios, is
the modal fulcrum of the
entire Suite: it is true
that the Prelude begins
with a clear chord in E
minor and lingers on an
open ending in A minor ,
but it almost seems that
the initial E serves as a

lendemain d'une
récente
expérience au sein
du jury d'un concours de
guitare, j'ai
constaté avec
grand plaisir que Giorgio
Mirto, avec qui j'avais
partagé le
rôle de
juré, souhaitait
célébrer
l'expérience du
concours - au cours de
laquelle nous avons
découvert que nous
avions eu un grand
affinité de
pensée - avec
quelque chose qui
pourrait perdurer dans le
temps et ne pas
s'évaporer comme
cela arrive souvent lors
de rencontres courtes et
occasionnelles entre
musiciens. Il l'a fait en
véritable
compositeur, ce qu'il
est, et m'a
dédié une
Suite d'une très
belle facture ÃÂ
laquelle je me suis
permis de collaborer au
moins formellement, en
suggérant des
titres pour les quatre
mouvements. C'est ainsi
qu'est née la
Suite n.1, une
pièce qui ne
respecte pas strictement
les règles
formelles de
l'époque baroque,
mais les
réinterprèt
e et les réutilise
dans une nouvelle
tonalité.
L'inspiration
évidente du
baroque tardif de
l'Ã
Âuvre m'a
amené ÃÂ
trouver des titres qui
invitaient
l'interprète
ÃÂ approfondir
l'inspiration
esthétique de
l'Ã
Âuvre. J'ai donc
suggéré
ÃÂ Giorgio de
titrer les quatre
mouvements avec quelque
chose qui reliait leur
contenu ÃÂ quatre
grands du XVIIIe
siècle.
Maîtres allemands.
Le prélude est
ainsi devenu d'Eisenach
en raison de son
atmosphère parfois
improvisée
ÃÂ la Bach, le
deuxième
mouvement, vaguement
toccata, parle un langage
d'orgue ÃÂ la
manière de
Buxtehude (qui vivait
àLübeck),
le mouvement lent a un
Qualité
haendélienne - et
Haendel est né
ÃÂ Halle - et le
dernier mouvement, loin
d'être une
véritable
Chaconne, a sans doute le
goût de cette
dernière pour la
variation et l'ostinato,
traits typiques de
Telemann qui vivait
ÃÂ Magdebourg. Les
villes qui apparaissent
dans les titres sont donc
indélébiles
aux auteurs cités.
De plus, il ne faut pas
penser que le style de
l'Ã
Âuvre soit en
aucune façon
allemand, étant
donné que Giorgio
Mirto s'exprime dans un
langage très
joyeux qui
synthétise la
modalité avec le
minimalisme, le tout
assaisonné d'un
clin d'Ã
Âil au rock
progressif Floyd de Pink.
ou un Mike Oldfield... Le
résultat de ce
mélange
d'idées,
d'inspirations et de
styles est un ouvrage que
personnellement je ne me
lasse pas de lire et de
relire, pour la
fraîcheur qui s'en
dégage et pour le
climat expressif qui
monte, se nourrissant de
plein efficacité.
On ne peut finalement pas
ignorer que la note B,
celle qui marque de
manière mineure
certaines des
Ã
Âuvres les plus
expressives du
répertoire de
guitare, depuis
l'étude de Sor qui
a fait tomber amoureux de
la guitare des
générations
d'étudiants,
jusqu'ÃÂ celle de
Frank Martin Quatre
Pièces via La
Catedral di Barrios, est
le point d'appui modal de
toute la Suite : il est
vrai que le
Prélude commence
par un accord clair en mi
mineur et s'attarde sur
une fin ouverte en la
mineur, mais il semble
presque que le mi initial
sert de une rampe de
lancement pour une suite
de l'Ã
Âuvre dans
laquelle la dominante,

Quintet consists of four
contrasting movements.
The first movement,
entitled Mannheim Rocket,
is a modern take on the
18th-century musical
technique in which a
rising figure speeds up
and grows louder. Marked
'Furioso', the movement
is gradually filled with
rising scalar figures
which build in volume and
finally 'launch' into
space with ethereal
string harmonics. At this
point, the music becomes
almost static, though the
inner rhythm
continues.The second
movement, entitled Kyrie,
is marked 'Still,
chant-like'. The
principal idea, stated
between first violin and
viola, is a chromatically
transformed chant-like
motive. It also features
a long, lyrical cello
line, made up exclusively
of natural harmonics,
emphasizing the
non-tempered ('out of
tune') 7th and 11th
partials.The third
movement is a scherzo in
which the strings and
piano sometimes alternate
and imitate each other,
reacting to each other's
gestures, and at other
times, combine and
synchronize to produce a
more blended sound. A
short Trio-like section
appears before the return
of the scherzo music.The
last movement, Pulse, is
made up of perpetually
moving 8th notes,
sometimes harmonically
static, but always
pushing forward. The work
is interrupted twice with
short, freer sections,
but always returns to its
pulse-oriented nature.-

At the end of
1944, Allied troops
invaded the Netherlands
from Belgium. Hope and
longing for freedom,
which now seemed so
close, swept through the
Netherlands: Operation
Market Garden was
launched. Huge numbers of
paratroopers made the
dangerous jump to take
over enemy territory on
the south side of the
Rhine. Fierce fighting
and attempts to cross and
secure the river resulted
in heavy casualties for
the liberating forces.
Ground support from the
south came too late and
there was no alternative
but to call off Operation
Market Garden. What
looked like a quick
liberation of the
Netherlands turned into a
long, bitter struggle. To
make matters worse, a
harsh winter followed:
hunger and cold ate away
at hope and the prospect
of a liberated
Netherlands. The
composition 1944 uses
original radio fragments
from 1944 to describe
these
events.

1944 vielen geallieerde
troepen vanuit België
Nederland binnen. Hoop en
verlangen naar vrijheid,
die nu zo dichtbij leek,
golfden door Nederland:
Operatie Market Garden
werd gelanceerd. Enorme
aantallen parachutisten
maakten de gevaarlijke
sprong om vijandelijk
gebied aan de zuidkant
van de Rijn in te nemen.
Hevige gevechten en
pogingen om de rivier
over te steken en veilig
te stellen resulteerden
in zware verliezen voor
de bevrijdende troepen.
Grondsteun vanuit het
zuiden kwam te laat en er
was geen alternatief dan
Operatie Market Garden af
te blazen. Wat leek op
een snelle bevrijding van
Nederland veranderde in
een lange, bittere
strijd. Tot overmaat van
ramp volgde er een
strenge winter: honger en
kou vrat de hoop en het
vooruitzicht op een
bevrijd Nederland weg. De
compositie 1944 gebruikt
originele radiofragmenten
uit 1944 om deze
gebeurtenissen te

erbitterten Kampf. Zu

ein harter Winter: Hunger
und Kälte zehrten an der
Hoffnung und der Aussicht
auf befreite Niederlande.
