Text: Rube, Johann
Chr.
Bach's chorale
cantata with its opening
text Wohl dem, der sich
auf seinen Gott recht
kindlich kann verlassen
(Tis well with him who on
the Lord trusts just like
a child) BWV 139 was
performed for the first
time on 12 November 1724
in the main Leipzig
church service. The
cantata text, based on
the hymn of the same name
by Johann Christoph Rube
(1665-1746), is in praise
of trust in God. In the
opening chorus, full of
depth of feeling, the
hymn melody is heard
throughout; this is
followed by a lively
tenor aria Gott ist mein
Freund (God is my friend)
with a musical depiction
of the adversary raging
in vain, and in the bass
aria Das Ungluck schlagt
auf allen Seiten
(Misfortune assails me on
every side) Bach presents
both drama and Baroque
imagery. One of the two
solo violin parts for the
tenor aria is lost, so
our edition offers a
reconstruction. The
virtuoso violin part of
the bass aria was
evidently based on a part
for violoncello piccolo,
now lost. The edition
provides for performance
by violin or violoncello.

A wonderful
teaching piece and the
ideal young band festival
work, BACH VARIANTS (six
melodic variations on the
Bach chorale AWAKE MY
HEART AND SING) should be
a staple of every young
band library. Chorale
style playing does so
much for the young band's
intonation, tone quality
and phrasing. Including
this one in your next
festival program is
certain to reap great
rewards by honing your
group's ability to make
quality sound. Even bands
which normally play music
of higher grade levels
will find a valuable
experience in James
Curnow's BACH VARIANTS.
Be sure to add this one
to your repertoire.

The
cantata for the 20th
Sunday after Trinity. Ah!
I see now, as I to the
wedding bidden, BWV 162
was first performed on 25
October 1716 in the
Castle church at Weimar.
During the first year in
his position as
Thomaskantor, Bach made a
revival performance of
the cantata on 10 October
1723. For this Leipzig
version he added an
additional obbligato
voice in the first
movement and in the final
chorale he added a Corno
da tirarsi, which played
colla-parte with the
soprano. However, we do
not know what this
mysterious instrument
looked like. For
performances today we
recommend using a trumpet
or a slide trumpet. The
cantata begins not with
an introductory chorus,
but rather with a
sonorous bass aria with a
string accompaniment and
obbligato trumpet. The
following movements,
movement 2 through 5, are
also performed by vocal
soloists. The third
movement, a soprano aria,
presents a peculiarity:
the obbligato wind parts
were not contained in the
original version of this
cantata. Our edition
offers a reconstruction
for the flute, made by
the famous Bach
interpreter and expert,
Masaaki Suzuki. Score and

Not a
warm-up...not a chorale.
Skill Stretchers are a
way to efficiently move
your band beyond the
first five notes by
working to extend ranges,
accidentals and key
signatures (in a way that
students discover for
themselves!). In
addition, Skill
Stretchers prepare the
clarinets to go over the
break, introduce lip
slurs for brass as well
as octave slurs for other
woodwinds. Accents,
flams, paradiddles and
nine-stroke rolls are
included for the snare
drum. Octaves and
arpeggios are introduced
to mallet percussion.
Skill Stretchers are a
supplement to any band
method. Used for a few
minutes daily, they
provide a systematic way
to conquer many of the
individual challenges
that occur with each
instrument.
