Philip
Sparke’s
Sinfonietta No. 4
is comprised of three
parts that are played as
an uninterrupted whole.
The _x001F_first movement
begins with a lyrical
fugato passage, framing a
brisker and more
rhythmical middle
section. The second
movement is slower and
contains a long and
expressive euphonium
solo. The third movement
is a salute to the
sponsor of this
commission: various
percussion instruments
conjure up sounds
reminiscent of a
carpenter’s
workshop, accompanied by
a unison orchestral
passage in a scat
style.
Sinfonie
tta No. 4 bestaat uit
drie in elkaar
overlopende delen. Het
eerste deel bestaat uit
een lyrische fugato dat
overgaat in een sneller
en ritmisch gedeelte. In
het tweede, trage deel,
komt een prachtige
euphoniumsolo aan bod.
Het derde deel bevat een
muzikale knipoog naar de
opdrachtgever van het
werk waarin de componist
diverse slagwerk
instrumenten geluiden na
laat bootsen die uit een
timmermanswekplaats
lijken te komen.
Philip Sparkes
Sinfonietta No. 4
besteht aus drei Teilen,
die ohne Unterbrechung
gespielt werden. Der
erste Satz beginnt mit
einer lyrischen
Fugato-Passage, die einen
schnelleren und
rhythmischeren Mittelteil
umrahmt. Der zweite Teil
ist langsamer und
enthält ein langes,
expressives
Euphoniumsolo. Der dritte
Teil ist ein Salut an den
Sponsor dieses
Kompositionsauftrags:
Diverse Schlaginstrumente
erinnern an die Klänge
aus einer Schreinerei,
unisono begleitet von
einer Orchesterpassage im
Scat-Stil.
Sinfoniet
ta No. 4 si compone
di tre parti da eseguire
senza interruzione. Il
primo movimento inizia
con un lirico passaggio
fugato, che fa da cornice
a una parte centrale
più veloce e ritmica.
Nel secondo movimento la
musica è più calma.
Un magni_x001E_fico
assolo di eufonio
attraversa la trama
musicale. Il terzo
movimento descrive in
musica le attivit
dell’azienda che
ha commissionato il brano
(un laboratorio di
falegnameria), attraverso
un passaggio per le
percussioni che ornano un
andamento orchestrale
all’unisono.

Wind
Sketches is a top
quality concert work for
wind band in three
movements, inspired by
the relationship between
man and wind. Trade
Winds, in the form of
a march, is reminiscent
of a shanty, conjuring up
seafaring and the
tradewinds.
Becalmed,
harmonically and
melodically almost
static, depicts the
doldrums. All the more
contrasting is Riding
the Storm, which
concerns the love-hate
relationship of people to
the winds that he needs
and at the same times
fears.
Wind
Sketches is een
eersteklas concertwerk
voor blaasorkest. Het
bestaat uit drie delen,
die gebaseerd zijn op de
relatie tussen de mens en
de wind: Trade
Winds, in marsvorm,
doet denken aan een
shanty en roept
associaties op met dezee
en passaatwinden.
Becalmed, dat in
melodieus en harmonieus
opzicht bijna statisch
is, schetst een
windstilte. Riding the
Storm is stormachtig:
het beschrijft de
haat-liefdeverhouding
tussen de mens en de
wind.
Wind
Sketches ist ein
hochkaratiges Konzertwerk
fur Blasorchester in drei
Satzen, die alle von der
Beziehung Mensch und Wind
inspiriert sind: Der
erste Trade Winds
in Marschform
erinnert an ein Shanty
und an Passatwinde auf
hoher See.Der zweite
Satz, Becalmed,
harmonisch und melodisch
fast statisch, beschreibt
eine Flaute. Umso
kontrastreicher ist der
dritte Satz, Riding
the Storm, der von
der Hassliebe des
Menschen des Menschen zu
Winden gepragt
ist.
Les trois
mouvements de cette piece
s'inspirent des rapports
entre les humains et
divers types de vents. Le
premier, Alizes
(Trade Winds), prend la
forme d'une marche aux
accents de chansons de
marins, le deuxieme
mouvement,
Encalmine(Becalmed
), est de nature quasi
statique, sans grand
developpement melodique
ou harmonique. Le finale,
Porte par la
tempete (Riding the
Storm), depeint les
relations humaines, par
le biais de vents
tumultueux, dangereux,
benefiques
etvivifiants.
I
tre movimenti di questo
brano si ispirano al
rapporto dell'uomo con il
vento. Il primo, Trade
Winds, prende la
forma di una marcia dagli
accenti di mare, il
secondo movimento,
Becalmed, e di
natura quasi statica,
senza grandi
sviluppimelodici o
armonici. Il finale,
Riding the Storm,
descrive i tanti venti
tumultuosi, pericolosi,
benefici e vigorosi.

Funk is a
very rhythmic music style
that finds its origin in
the 1960s. The American
artist James Brown and
the New Orleans-based
group The Meters are
considered the founders
of this genre. Funk is
characterized by an
independentbass line that
emphasizes each first
beat of the bar (the
one), as well as by a
rhythmic combination of
syncopated melodies and
accompaniments with lots
of harmonic additions.
This style-conscious
composition by Peter
KleineSchaars contains a
healthy blend of the
harmonic ingredients as
well as the rhythmic
challenges of funk music.
On the one hand, New
Orleans Funk is an
educational exercise with
the rhythmic cells 9,10,
14, 15 and 16: on the
otherhand, it is a funky
highlight of your
rehearsal or
concert!
Funk is
een sterk ritmische
muziekstijl die in de
jaren zestig van de
vorige eeuw is ontstaan.
De Amerikaanse muzikant
James Brown en de uit New
Orleans afkomstige groep
The Meters worden
beschouwd als de
grondleggers van
ditgenre. Naast een
zelfstandige baslijn die
elke eerste tel van de
maat (the one) stevig
benadrukt, wordt funk
gekenmerkt door een
ritmisch samenspel tussen
syncopische melodieën
en begeleidingen met veel
harmonische
toevoegingen.Deze
stijlbewuste compositie
van Peter Kleine Schaars
bevat zowel de
harmonische
ingrediënten als de
ritmische uitdagingen die
erbij horen. Enerzijds is
New Orleans Funk een
pedagogische oefening met
de ritmische cellen 9,10,
14,15 en 16, anderzijds
is het werk een funky
hoogtepunt van uw
repetitie of
concert!

rhythmischen

Funkmusik. Einerseits ist
New Orleans Funk ein
pädagogisches
Übungsstück aus
denRhythmus-Einheiten 9,

Helmut
Lachenmann is no doubt
the composer who, since
the late 1960s, has
opened the door the most
widely to a new sound
world in the technique of
composition for classical
instruments. Not only
that: he has also
consistently explored new
territories in his scores
with respect to the
notation of the new
sounds and performing
techniques. At the
Stuttgart
Musikhochschule, Matthias
Hermann, himself a
composer and conductor,
has recorded in short
video films all the
expanded performance
techniques that are
essential to Lachenmann's
scores. The CD-ROM
programmed by Maceij
Walczak is completely
bilingual
(German-English) and
offers film (with sound),
notation and a detailed
explanation. All symbols
and notational forms are
systematically arranged
according to the
instrument. In addition,
the CD-ROM contains two
conversations in which
Lachenmann expressed his
views on the project in
great detail in 2009 and
2010. The transcript of
these texts is also
available in English on
the CD-ROM. Basso
continuo komponiert von
Friedrich II. dem Grossen
(1712-1786) Konig von
Preussen von 1740 bis
1786. Der konigliche
Komponist stellt in den
vier jetzt erstmals
vorgelegten Sonaten seine
Qualitaten voll und ganz
unter Beweis. Insgesamt
zeichnen sich die Werke
durch Erfindungskraft,
Konnen und Stilvielfalt
aus. In Schloss Sanssouci
entstanden offenkundig
Adagios voller Emotionen
und brillante
Allegro-Satze, die
belegen, uber welch
virtuose Fahigkeiten der
Quantz-Schuler verfugte.

continuo composed by
Frederick II known as the
Great (1712-1786) King of
Prussia from 1740 to
1786. In the four sonatas
presented here for the
first time, the royal
composer can lay
uncontested claim to an
above-average talent. The
works stand out for their
imaginative power, their
skill and their stylistic
variety. The grand rooms
of Sanssouci Palace must
have been filled with
heartfelt Adagios and
brilliant Allegros that
confirmed the virtuoso
flute technique of the
Quantz pupil. The sonatas
were recently recorded on
CD (Hungaroton) by the
editor who, as a
performer, is a
recognized expert on the
music of J. J. Quantz and
Frederick the Great.

Nearly all of the

light-colored transparent

always basing his ideas
on the poetic idea of the

refined ways of

cases Sibelius used a

added to the strings. Mit

new arrangement of the
Hungarian-Romani folk
song Jarba, Mare Jarba
for their 2014 touring
program. Passed down
orally through the Romani
communities, this
beautiful folk song, with
text in a language called
Beas (beh-osh), speaks of
a deep longing to visit
one's homeland, a place
where the singer can
never return. Chanticleer
consists of twelve men
whose vocal ranges span
from low bass to high
soprano, equivalent to
the range of a mixed
choir of women and men. I
composed slow sections of
original material to
represent the singers'
longing to return home;
these are interspersed
with the folk song's
traditional fast
sections. The
incorporated shouts and
calls in the score are
typically found in the
performance of Central
European folk songs. I
hope you enjoy singing
this new version of
Jarba, Mare Jarba that
contains all of the vigor
and excitement of the
Chanticleer version.

future, when scientists
have created tiny,

are the top chef whose
job is to feed the hungry

movements (16-20
measures) with lyrics
tell the story of how the
chef saves the day. No
signatures are used -
just accidentals. Some
close hand shifts occur,
but hands are mostly
stationary. Optional
teacher duets round out

from the anthology
Just So Stories,
written by Rudyard
Kipling for his daughter

health. The book inspired
composer Maxim Aulio to
compose this work which

The piece opens with a

these gardens that the
baritone saxophone makes
its appearance
representing King Solomon
himself, the flute
representing the
butterfly couple, the
clarinet representing
Queen Balkis and the
trumpet the
djin.

The Atlas
Symphony for
symphonic wind band is an
impressive and subtle
work, thematically
complex, with a rich
orchestration, but also
great beauty. The
composer was keen to draw
a parallel between an
atlas, where all the
geographical maps of the
world are collected in
one book, and his score,
which brings together all
the facets of his musical
style. Despite being
written without any
breaks, the symphony is
structured around three
main ideas. It is based
upon a series of notes
that will become the very
essence of the piece, its
building blocks. Like the
works of composers of
serial music, the series
appears in different
forms - melodic and
harmonic, thematic or
simply asan
accompaniment. With its
wealth of rhythms and
contrapuntal power, this
piece is a compelling
concerto for orchestra.
The Orchestre de la
Police Nationale was
the first to be attracted
to this work and
premiered it with
excellence under the
baton of composer Thierry
Deleruyelle.
Die
Atlas Symphony
für symphonisches
Blasorchester ist ein
eindrucksvolles,
feinsinniges Werk, mit
einer komplexen Thematik
und einer reichhaltigen
Orchestrierung, aber
dennoch anmutig. Der
Komponist beabsichtigte,
eine Parallele zwischen
einem Atlas, der
geografische Karten der
ganzen Welt enthält,
und seiner Partitur zu
ziehen, die alle Facetten
seines persönlichen
Musikstils enthält.
Obwohl sie ohne
Unterbrechung geschrieben
ist, ist diese Symphonie
doch auf drei Hauptachsen
aufgebaut. Sie basiert
auf einer Reihe von
Noten, welche die
Quintessenz, das Material
des gesamten Stückes
bilden. Wie bei den
Komponisten serieller
Musik tritt diese Reihe
in verschiedenenGestalten
auf - melodisch oder
harmonisch, thematisch
oder einfach als
Begleitung. Mit seinem
Reichtum an Rhythmen und
der kontrapunktischen
Brillanz ist die Atlas
Symphony ein
wahrhaftes Konzert
für Orchester. Das
Orchestre de la Police
Nationale
(Frankreich) war das
erste Orchester, das sich
von diesem Werk
verführen ließ und
spielte eine brillante
Uraufführung unter
der Leitung des
Komponisten Thierry
Deleruyelle.
Atlas
Symphony è un
brano grandioso, di
enorme bellezza, pieno di
sfumature, tematicamente
complesso, con una ricca
orchestrazione. La
sinfonia è scritta
senza interruzioni e
basata su una serie di
note che vengono proposte
nella melodia,
nell’armonia e nel
tema. La ricchezza di
ritmi e la brillantezza
dei contrappunti, fanno
di Atlas Symphony
un brano da concerto
perfetto.
