Comp oser's Preface: Antithigram is coined from the words antithesis and program. The work is bi-thematic -- the first theme comprised of eleven notes, the second (beginning at measure 63) more like a chorale in structure. A four-note tone cluster (B flat, C, F sharp, B natural) appears in the first measure, and subsequently appears as an arpeggiated ostinato (B flat, C, and F sharp, in orchestra bells and vibraphone) that underpins and adheres subsequent sections. After the themes are treated in a number of traditional ways (two-voice counterpoint, canon, chorale, and diminution) they are joined at measure 110 in a polychordal statement. The work should be performed with energy, with special attention to a precise and lively style of articulation. Antithigram was composed in the Summer of 1977 and premiered by the East Carolina University Symphonic Band in April of 1978 with the composer conducting. Adventure Land was commissioned by Clermont Communauté and the CREA (the directors of the local music schools and conservatories) in France. This work was the opening piece of a show combining orchestra, choir and actors. The story takes place in the city of Clermont-Ferrand, which an explorer discovers through a series of riddles and adventures. Adventure Land is written in the form of a symphonic march which features a slow and pleasant passage in the middle of the work. The result is a dynamic and playful piece, similar to the style that one might find in cartoons or in animated films.

Adventur e Land werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Clermont Communauté en de CREA (de leiders van de lokale muziekscholen en het plaatselijke conservatorium) in Frankrijk. Dit stuk was het openingswerk van een show waarin orkest, koor en acteurs zich verenigden. Het verhaal vindt plaats in de stad Clermont-Ferrand, die door een avonturier wordt ontdekt door middel van een reeks raadsels en belevenissen. Adventure Land is geschreven in de vorm van een symfonische mars met een langzame, fraaie passage in het midden. Het resultaat is een dynamisch, speels werk in een stijl die doet denken aan teken- en animatiefilms.

A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

In the autumn of 1721, when Georg Philipp Telemann became cantor at the Hamburg Johanneum and music director of the city’s five principal churches, he faced the challenge of composing and performing a new Passion setting every year.

The ninety-minute St. John Passion of 1745 was written in a winningly clear and transparent style, with two large choral numbers, six chorales (probably joined by the congregation) and several turbae that pose interesting yet manageable demands on the chorus.
