The musicologist

creating a four-part

derived from corrections
made in the autograph of
the Mass in B minor. He
has underlaid this with
the text of the opening

Brahms
composed his Triumphlied
for eight-part chorus,
solo baritone and
orchestra as a direct
reaction to the victory
of the German army in the
Franco-Prussian War of
1870/71 and the
consequent founding of
the German Empire.
Similar to the German
Requiem completed shortly
before, Brahms himself
compiled the text from
the Bible, in this case
from Chapter 19 of the
Book of Revelations.
Because of the somewhat
melodramatic tone of the
composition and the
nationalistic background
to the works genesis, in
recent years the
Triumphlied has seldom
been heard in concert
halls. Unlike
overly-patriotic
occasional works such as
Richard Wagner's
Kaisermarsch, the
Triumphlied is true
Brahms and is a musically
rich composition. This
study edition takes the
musical text from the
Brahms Complete Edition
(HL 51486030), thereby
representing the highest
scholarly precision. The
Appendix contains an
exciting new discovery, a
previously-unknown early
version of the 1st
movement in C major,
which was only
rediscovered in 2012 in
Bremen.

Giambattista
Casti.
A memorable
musical competition
commissioned by the
emperor Joseph II took
place on 7 February 1786
as part of a festival in
the orangery of the
Schönbrunn palace. A
German Singspiel ensemble
performed Mozart’s
“Schauspieldirektor
†whilst Antonio
Salieri’s
“Prima la musica e
poi le parole†was
performed by the Italian
court singers and
musicians. This charming
opera satire belongs to
the genre of
“metamelodrammaâ
in which the opera
itself becomes the
subject of the action.
The people who are part
of an opera production,
for example the
librettist, composer and
prima donna, appear as
characters on the stage
and are presented in a
humorous self-reflection.
In this ‘theatre
about theatre’
Salieri parodies the
music from Giuseppe
Sarti’s
“Giulio
Sabino†in his
insert arias, thus
playing on the music
which was totally
familiar with the
audience of the time. By
reflecting on the
musical-dramatic style of
that period and
discussing whether
‘the word’
or ‘the
music’ should take
priority, this
masterpiece is considered
to be an early forerunner
to Richard
Strauss’s
“Capriccioâ€.<

This suite
has been taken from the
music of the Christmas
tale of the same name.
The instrumentation can
be easily realized with
four woodwind
instruments, two brass
instruments, timpani and
strings. The 'Tanz der
Holzpuppen', a foxtrot,
is suitable as encore
showing the humorous
musician Hindemith who,
in 1920, wrote to the
Schott publishing house
with a wink: 'Can you
also make use of
foxtrots, Bos-tons, rags
and other kitsch?
Whenever I cannot think
of decent music, I write
such stuff.'.

Mendelssohn
's ConfessionThe
Reformation Symphony,
misleadingly numbered
posthumously as 5 by its
publishers, was
Mendelssohn's first
confrontation with the
large symphonic form in
Beethoven's wake. Linking
it conceptually with the
300th anniversary of the
Augsburg Confession in
1830 seems to have first
occurred late in the
progress of its
composition, yet the
premiere did not take
place until 1832 and
ultimately even enabled
the composer to distance
himself completely from
his work and its concept.
Thanks to access to a new
source [or, ... new
access to sources... or
...new access to a
source...?], this edition
can now finally refute
the legend that a
separate original or
early version of the
symphony once
existed.

Beethovenâ
€™s incidental music
op. 84 was written in
1809 for a performance of
Goethe’s drama
“Egmont†at
the Burgtheater in
Vienna. Numerous
composers of the day
tried their hand at
writing music for the
dramatic material of
Goethe’s tragedy,
several in collaboration
with the author himself.
The overture reflects the
themes of the play
through its expressive
music, and over the last
two hundred years it has
become one of the most
popular works by
Beethoven conceived for
the stage.
For
this new edition,
Beethoven specialist
Jonathan Del Mar draws on
various manuscript
sources including a
handwritten set of parts
which has never been
taken into account
before. Thus, numerous
discrepancies such as
missing notes in the
flute part or unclear
bowing could be clarified
for the first
time.

Brilliantl
y balancing lyrical and
rhythmic playing at a
fast tempo, this piece is
fun and will bring a
smile to all. The
bouncing accompaniments
and lyrical melodies will
remind students of
playing with a lively,
inquisitive pet, perhaps
as it bounces from flower

Take Flight was written
in remembrance of the
composer's beloved pet as
a celebration of the role
pets play in our lives.

English/German. Text:
Newman, John
Henry.
This is the
best of me, wrote Edward
Elgar after the final
measure of his Dream of
Gerontius. Premiered in
1900, in Great Britain
the work has long been a
standard work in the
repertoire of large
oratorio choirs. Elgar's
moving, poetic setting of
the eponymous poem by
Cardinal John Henry
Newman is about a dying
man and his journey
beyond death to God.
Before the eyes of the
listeners, a musical
image of the soul is
created which flies past
mocking demons to God
with its protecting angel
at its side, is allowed
to look at God briefly,
then faces the purgatory
confident and comforted.
The work is a real rarity
in the history of
oratorio, and for large
choirs it is a thrilling
alternative to the
established repertoire of
Requiem settings. Its
popularity is thanks to
the suggestive, often
sensuous power of the
music, the great choral
scenes of the demons and
the angels, and the three
impressive solo
parts.All
previous editions were
reprints based on the
historic first printed
materials, which are
inconsistent. By
contrast, Carus has
produced a modern,
newly-engraved edition,
compatible in all
sections, which takes all
the sources into
consideration and
evaluates the autograph
manuscript in detail. For
this edition the complete
orchestral material is
available on sale, and
the vocal score and full
score contain both
English and German
singing texts. The full
