Scripture: Matthew
22:1-14. The
cantata for the 20th
Sunday after Trinity. Ah!
I see now, as I to the
wedding bidden, BWV 162
was first performed on 25
October 1716 in the
Castle church at Weimar.
During the first year in
his position as
Thomaskantor, Bach made a
revival performance of
the cantata on 10 October
1723. For this Leipzig
version he added an
additional obbligato
voice in the first
movement and in the final
chorale he added a Corno
da tirarsi, which played
colla-parte with the
soprano. However, we do
not know what this
mysterious instrument
looked like. For
performances today we
recommend using a trumpet
or a slide trumpet. The
cantata begins not with
an introductory chorus,
but rather with a
sonorous bass aria with a
string accompaniment and
obbligato trumpet. The
following movements,
movement 2 through 5, are
also performed by vocal
soloists. The third
movement, a soprano aria,
presents a peculiarity:
the obbligato wind parts
were not contained in the
original version of this
cantata. Our edition
offers a reconstruction
for the flute, made by
the famous Bach
interpreter and expert,
Masaaki Suzuki. Score and
parts available

Latin. Johann
Michael Haydn's Requiem
in C minor heavily
influenced W. A. Mozart's
Requiem. In just two
weeks Michael Haydn
composed his work in
December 1771, on the
occasion of the death of
his employer, Prince
Bishop Sigismund Count
Schrattenbach, who was
beloved among the people
and was a great patron of
the arts. The work was
written under the
impression of personal
tragedy: Haydn's only
child, Aloisia Josepha,
died in January 1771,
before completing her
first year of life. Parts
of the
Schrattenbach-Requiem
were played together with
the completed movements
from his second,
unfinished Requiem during
his own furneral service.
During the funeral
service in Vienna for
Joseph Haydn, parts of
his younger brother's
C-minor Requiem were also
performed. Score and

elements contribute to
the Christmas character
of this mass, which is
distinguished by the fine
skillfulness of its

means, such as motives in
triads, the symbol of
gently rocking,
traditional themes and a
fitting instrumentation
with trumpets and flutes.
Because of its catchy,

identified as the work of
Father Georg Pasterwiz)
and it is also his last
work, his Opus ultimum.
On commission from
Empress Maria Theresia he
began the composition in
1805, but due to a
serious illness he made
only slow progress with
the work. Like W. A.
Mozart, he could not
complete this Requiem. In
1839 Father Gunther
Kronecker, Benedictine
Father in the monastery
of Kremsmunster in Upper
Austria, completed the
torso in the spirit and
style of Haydn. During
his student days in
Vienna Father Gunther

Latin. The
relatively unspectacular
nature of the Spaur Mass
may be one of the reasons
for the fact that writers
on music generally refer
to it only as a
peripheral work, a little
sister of Mozart's
important church works.
With regard to scoring,
the Spaur Mass belongs to
the category of the missa
solemnis, but its brevity
and its stylistic
character belong far more
to the missa brevis.
Unlike the Organ Solo
Mass KV 259, here the
soloistic element - both
instrumental and vocal -
is clearly integrated to
the background in favour
of the development of the
whole ensemble. Score and

Latin. After Johann
Adolf Hasse had ended his
career as a composer for
the opera stage and
finally settled down in
Venice, he wrote a number
of sacred works. Since he
had long been obligated
to the Saxon Court, where
he served as a composer
for three decades until
1763, these works were
originally intended for
the Catholic Court Church
in Dresden. The
solemn-pathetic Missa in
G minor (1783), with the
inserted movement Ad te
levavi, is Hasse's final
work: a crowning
conclusion to an oeuvre
whose significance in
music history has only
recently begun to be
recognized and has now
received the fitting
acknowledgement it
deserves. Score and parts

Latin. Johann Georg
Zechner is considered to
be one of the most
prolific Austrian
composers of church music
during the time of Maria
Theresa. His ca. 250
surviving compositions,
including works in
practically all genre of
church music, found a
wide reception in many
Austrian, Bohemian and
Moravian monasteries and
in pilgrimage churches.
His Grosse Orgelsolomesse
was probably composed in
1761 for the dedication
of the organ in the
monastery at Gottweig. As
in other of his late
works, the strict royal
style, which essentially
characterizes Zechner's
compositions, is tempered
through the use of
elements of the galant
style of composition. The
organ plays solistically
in all of the movements.

Latin. Since the
days of Renaissance
composers - beyond
accusations of plagiarism
- the admiration for a
fellow composer has taken
the form of quotations
from his works or even
new versions of his
works. No less a work
from the classical period
than Joseph Haydn's
oratorio The Creation
(first performed in
1798), was the basis for
the Schopfungsmesse
(Creation Mass) by the
Salzburg Court and
Cathedral Music Director,
Luigi Gatti. Gatti heard
the oratorio in Salzburg
performances conducted by
Johann Michael Haydn in
1800. With great skill
and sensitivity Gatti was
able to underlay the
choruses and arias of The
Creation with the text of
the Mass (at times he
reduced and adapted the
instrumentation), without
doing harm to the admired
original. Score and parts

Schubert's Mass in A-flat
major: A work that time
and again occupied the
composer anew, with which
he, in his words, strived
towards the highest in
art - and perhaps only
wished to receive a court
appointment in Vienna.
His efforts to present a
new, individual mass led,
at any rate, to
unconventional solutions
(and an unusual key), a
renunciation of plain
acclamation, a reduction
of pathos in favor of an
exceptionally elaborate
composition, particularly
the first part - a
brilliant missa solemnis
for the ceremonious
organization of the court
church service and, at
the same time, the public
presentation of an
ambitious composer's
artistic competence.

Goes. Bach's first
cantata for the election
of the Leipzig town
council, composed in
August 1723, is one of
his most splendidly
scored work from his
Leipzig period. The
choice of opening, with
the representative form
of a French overture, was
suited to a festive
orchestral scoring. Two
choral movements frame a
middle section which
consists of two arias and
a recitativo accompagnato
with a trumpet
ritornello. The
conclusion of this
extended festive music
takes a reflective turn
in movements 8 and 9,
when Bach allows a
recitative to be followed
by simple, prayer-like
chorale movement. Score

flat major. Language:
Latin. With a total
duration of about 30
minutes, Schubert's Mass
in B flat major (D 324),
written in 1815, is
considerably longer than
Mozart's and Haydn's
classical Brevis masses,
and its large
instrumental ensemble
with strings, woodwinds,
brass and timpani even
gives it a clearly solemn
character. Overall,
Schubert was inspired by
the late Haydn style of
the symphonic mass (e.g.,
the division into six
large movements, the
omission of arias for the
vocal soloists who are
instead juxtaposed with
the choir, singing short
passages either singly or
as a group) without, of
course, achieving its
temporal expansion. This
is a representative,
musically appealing work
that excels with its
multi-layered, detailed
text treatment. It is,
therefore, suitable for
special occasions and the
high feasts of the church
year and can be mastered
well by experienced
church choirs. Score and
parts available

Language:
German/English. The
cantata Die Himmel
erzahlen die Ehre Gottes
(The heavens are telling
of God in glory) BWV 76
by Johann Sebastian Bach
was written for the 2nd
Sunday after Trinity,
which fell on 6 June 1723
in the year it was first
performed. This ambitious
two-part work was the
second cantata which Bach
wrote after taking up the
position of Kantor of St.
Thomas's in Leipzig.
Bach's aim was evidently
to demonstrate a
particularly wide range
of musical forms in both
the arias and the
recitatives in this
cantata. The opening
chorus is based on verses
2 and 4 of Psalm 19, with
verse 4 structured as a
choral fugue. Both parts
of the cantata end with a
chorale movement with
different verses from the
Lutheran hymn Es woll uns
Gott genadig sein. The
text refers loosely to
the epistle reading from
the 1st letter of St
John, but deals more with
general thoughts about
the temptations of the
Christian which can be
overcome through love.
Bach also performed the
first part of the cantata
later with minor
revisions, but evidently
no alterations to the
text, on Reformation Day
in Leipzig. Score and
parts available
separately - see item
