pastoral Daphnis et Egl
was performed only once,
on 29 October 1753, for
the entertainment of King
Louis XV at Fontainebleau
and remained unpublished
until today.
This
edition is based on
Rameau's autograph
manuscript, a copy of the
separate parts, and the
libretto published by
Ballard in 1753. A
comparison of the sources
reveals two versions of
the work: the original
version and the one
revised for
Fontainebleau, whereby
the differences lie
mainly in the final
divertissement. This
edition recommends the
Fontainebleau
version—which is
actually more complete in
its musical form, in
particular with its
overture and two
ariettas—but also
reconstructs the original
state of the final
divertissement (presented

des finnischen
Komponisten. Das
vorliegende Impromptu
entstand Anfang 1894, als
Jean Sibelius die kurz
zuvor komponierten
Klavier-Impromptus op. 5
Nr. 5 und Nr. 6
zusammenfugte und fur
Streichorchester
instrumentierte. Die
beiden im Gestus vollig
unterschiedlichen
Charakterstudien finden
dabei zu einem
einheitlichen Ganzen da
Sibelius das Hauptthema
aus dem sturmischen.

Hoffmann neben Peter
Cornelius als der
bedeutendste in Mainz
geborene Komponist
bezeichnet werden. Seine
ersten Kompositionen
zeigen Anklange an
Fruhwerke der Wiener
Klassik: Hatte er sich
doch bei der
Kaiserkronung Leopolds
II. in Frankfurt (1790)
mit Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart angefreundet, der
sogar mit ihm musizierte.
Rasch entwickelte
Hoffmann eine sehr
individuelle
Schaffensweise. Seine
musikalische Laufbahn
begann in der
Kurmainzischen
Hofkapelle. In Frankfurt
ubernahm er spater das
Amt des Musikdirektors
als Nachfolger von Louis
Spohr, dem damals wohl
grossten deutschen
Geiger. Neben mehreren
Kammermusikwerken, einem
Doppelkonzert und zwei
Violinkonzerten verdienen
es besonders die 6
Streichquartette und 15
Streichduos, auch heute
noch wegen ihrer
Originalitat und
Klangfulle gespielt zu
werden. Von den
Streichduos wurden 6 fur
zwei Violinen und 9 fur
Violine und Violoncello
komponiert.

This suite was
written in the style of
traditional Russian folk
music, but does not use
existing melodies or
themes as its basis. The
colourful and varied work
contains a number of
surprising turns, but
also familiar sounds.
After the introduction, a
kind of Trepak follows ?
a fairly quick dance with
attractive themes. The
second movement (Garovot)
is predominantly slow and
conveys some melancholy,
although, during a more
dynamic passage the
passion flares up again.
Finally, the Troika takes
us along in a reindeer
sleigh through a grand
snowy landscape. This is
a wonderful tribute to
the music of Eastern
Europe in the style of
some of the great Russian
masters.

Jan Van der Roost diese
Suite im Stil russischer
Volksmusik, ohne dabei
bestehende Melodien oder
Themen zu verwenden.
Melancholie, aber auch
feuriges Temperament,
Virtuosität neben sehr
vertrauten Momenten und
melodischer Ausdruck
neben würzigen
Rhythmen: Das alles
steckt in der Seele
russischer Musik. Diese
klangfarben- und
abwechslungsreiche Suite
wartet mit einer Reihe
überraschender
Wendungen auf, enthält
aber auch vertraute
Klänge.

contiene cammini
sorprendenti in un
paesaggio sonoro
caratteristico
dell’anima
musicale russa.
L’introduzione
è seguita da una danza
veloce simile al
Trepak; i temi
sono combattivi. Il
secondo movimento,

la passione rinasce in un
passaggio più animato.
