Unter den zahlreichen kirchenmusikalischen Werken Mabellinis finden sich nur wenige für eine Chorbesetzung a cappella. Das hier als Erstdruck vorgelegte In gloria dei patris von 1869 stellt eine wirkliche Ausnahme dar, weil es als Albumblatt entstanden ist und wohl gar nicht für eine reale Aufführung geschaffen wurde. Die autographe Niederschrift dieser kontrapunktischen Miniatur findet sich im Musikalbum des italienischen Komponisten, Musikwissenschaftlers und Bibliothekars Francesco Florimo, welches zahlreiche musikalische Autographe von Zeitgenossen versammelt. Das Album versammelt auf mehr als 130 Blättern unterschiedlichste Eintragungen, von Skizzen zu längeren, fertig ausgearbeiteten Kompositionen verschiedenster Gattungen. So bescheiden Mabellinis kurzes Chorstück auf einen ersten Blick auch erscheinen mag - es steckt doch voll von höchster kontrapunktischer Kunst. Das Thema ist einfach, für den beabsichtigten Zweck aber äußerst zweckmäßig. Die Harmonisierung bleibt ebenfalls grundlegend und verlässt den Tonartenraum nicht. Sein Augenmerk hat Mabellini ganz auf die Form gelegt, war er doch als geschickter Kontrapunktiker bekannt und war das Albumblatt schließlich für einen Musiker gedacht, der sich an kontrapunktischen Künsten zu begeistern wusste. Möge das schöne, nicht allzu schwer einzustudierende und aufzuführende Stück seinen Platz im Musikleben unserer Zeit finden und sich alsbald zahlreiche Freunde gewinnen. Die Formgestalt der Fuge, die jeder interessierte Musiker in dieser Miniatur geradezu exemplarisch herauslesen kann, ist ein Erlebnis bereits auf dem reinen Notenpapier und erst recht im lebendigen Musizieren. Busoni's Bach Advanced SchoolIn October 1909, Breitkopf & Hartel succeeded in winning Ferruccio Busoni for the edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's piano works. Busoni had studied the music of Bach more intensively than almost any other artist of his time had. As a pianist, arranger, theorist and pedagogue, Busoni was instrumental in bringing Bach out of the 19th century and into the 20th century. That same year, Busoni and two collaborators, Bruno Mugellini and Egon Petri, began work on the instructive edition, which was to comprise 25 volumes. The first volumes were published in the spring of 1916, and in May 1923, the Bach Advanced School project was finally completed. This also marked the end of Busoni's thirty-year-long creative involvement with Bach's works, the impact of which still reaches far beyond the Bach-Busoni formula.All alterations and additions pursue the educational intent of affording the student insight into the mechanism of the composition. Moreover, they illustrate and supplement the views presented only in a sketchy manner in the introductions. Foll owing the complete collection of Heinrich von Herzogenberg's secular choral music (winner of the Music Edition Prize 2011), Carus has published Volume 2, the complete sacred a cappella choral works. The editor is once again Konrad Klek, who describes in detail the circumstances surrounding the composition of these works. In addition to the five cycles of Liturgische Gesange for various services during the church year, the original liturgical integration of the choral music is explained in detail. The four to eight-voice motet Mitten wir im Leben sind from 1881, composed in reaction to a catastrophic fire, is a first edition from the manuscript. Of the nine additional motets, until now two were not available: a festive five-part motet for Pentecost and the great double chorus for the silver anniversary of Mendelssohn's daughter, Lili Wach. Smaller choral settings for specific occasions (e.g., weddings) round out the picture. The Begrabnis-Gesang (funeral lament) for tenor solo and men's choir at the end of this volume, with his own words as well as music, is a very personal offering by the composer to the widow of his deceased friend, Philipp Spitta. All the works are also available in separate editions.
