After
finishing a serious
woodwind quintet in the
fall of 2001 [Tela
Lacerata], I found, in
the ensuing months, that
its cinders/ashes were
still impregnating my
eardrums. Therefore, when
I set out to write the
present string piece, I
realized that the musical
veins of the quartet,
like related cousins,
were sharing the same
blood as the earlier wind
composition. The
resultant Fifth Quartet
evolved into two large,
extended movements, each
one containing seven
parts that are played
without pause. As the
list of the various
sub-sections clearly
indicates, the formal
structure of the
movements appear to be
identical: each with
three main parts
enveloped by interludes,
plus an introduction and
coda. However, the
principal segments of the
first (slow) movement
gradually decrease in
length, while those of
the second (fast)
movement increase. In
addition, there is a
goodly amount of sonic
material stolen from the
first movement which
reappears -- stitched
together in a new guise
-- into the world of the
second. for example, the
bulk of Parts B and C of
Movement II are lifted
bodily, although
elaborately modified,
from their first
appearances in the
Introduction and Part A
of the fist movement.
This offers, I suppose at
least a hint of a
traditional
recapitulation. As was
true in the earlier
woodwind piece -- both
harmonically and
melodically -- the
embryonic growth of the
musical fabric (primarily
the tritone and perfect
fifth) is omnipresent,
almost obsessively,
throughout the course of
the whole work. These two
intervals, not unlike
plasticine, habitually
transform themselves into
the scales, chords, and
melodic lines that
pervade the texture of
the quartet. Owing to the
largely unrelieved
dramatic flow, the
shifting speed, and the
often fervent intensity,
the quartet places
considerable demands on
the dexterity,
virtuosity, and stamina
of the four performers.
String Quartet No. 5 is
approximately 22 minutes
in duration and
affectionately dedicated
to my violinist wife
Elizabeth, as a gift for
our 47 years together. It
was commissioned by the
Corigliano String
Quartet, New York, NY. --

The more you play
the guitar the better
youâ??ll become and the
more fun and enjoyment
youâ??ll have. When I
asked Rev. Gary Davis
when and how I should
practice on my guitar his
answer was clear. He told
me to play first thing in
the morning and then last
thing at night. He said I
should keep my guitar out
of its case so that I
could play it whenever I
wanted. The message was
to play and enjoy
yourself.
This collection of
blues, jug band tunes,
rags and novelty songs
should present you with
hours, weeks, months and
even years of enjoyment

easy to difficult.

Clara
Schumann (1819-1896)
wrote this work in 1853,
creating seven variations
on her husband's theme
from his Bunte
Blätter, Op. 99, No. 4
(Albumblätter) for
piano. She presented the
piece to Robert Schumann
on his 43rd birthday in
1853, the year before his
crippling mental
breakdown, making this
the final birthday that
he would spend with his
family. It is also among
the last works that Clara
Schumann composed for the
piano. Johannes Brahms
was inspired by Clara to
compose his own
Variations on a Theme by
Robert Schumann, Op. 9,
which he then dedicated
to her.

Fresh from
the loss of his oldest
daughter Maria Mahler,
and knowing he had a
serious heart condition,
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
crafted Das Lied von der
Erde (The Song of the
Earth) in the years 1908
and 1909. The first
performance took place on
November 20, 1911 at the
Tonhalle in Munich,
conducted by Bruno
Walter. It encompasses
six settings of old
Chinese poems, four of
them by the Tang Dynasty
poet Li Bai, loosely
translated into German by
Hans Bethge. Conscious of
his own mortality, Mahler
filled his orchestral
song cycle with themes of
resignation, fading
beauty, and autumn
loneliness. The last
song, roughly the same
length as the previous
five movements combined,
serves as a sprawling,
yet deeply personal
farewell to both love and
life. Instrumentation:

Count
d'Ogny commissioned Franz
Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
to write three symphonies
for the Concert de la
Loge Olympique, which was
then recognized as one of
the finest orchestras in
Europe. He completed the
second of these, the
SYMPHONY No. 91 in E flat
major, Hob. I/91, in
1788. It received its
premiere the next year in
the Tuileries Palace
gardens, mere months
before King Louis XVI and
his royal family came to
live there under custody
of the French Revolution.
It is his last symphony
to exclude trumpets and
timpani, but stuffed with
delicacies that would
have appealed to its
Parisian audience. Its
graceful, ebullient
character offers no hints
of the hard misfortune
that would soon fall on
the aristocratic
listeners who first
enjoyed this charming
work. Instrumentation:
