Cesar Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck's friend, the cellist Jules Desart, was so impressed when he heard the Violin Sonata performed at the Société nationale de musique in Paris that he adapted the work for his instrument. This arrangement was first published in 1887 by inserting the cello part into the piano score of the original edition. For this purpose the piano score had received a new cover and the publisher had expanded the title of the composition to 'Sonate pour piano et violon ou violoncelle?. This version by the cellist Jules Delsart for piano and violoncello is the only arrangement of the work authorized by the composer and its first edition represents the main source for Bärenreiter's new scholarly-critical publication.Bärenreiter's new edition also includes a separate movement, 'Mélancolie?, first published after Franck's death in 1911, again for the same instrumentation, piano and violin or violoncello. This short piece is based on a solfège exercise and was written at the height of the composer's creative powers, at about the same time as his famous violin sonata. The edition is rounded off by an informative text on the genesis and reception history of the two compositions (Ger/Fr/Eng), a complete list of sources, editorial notes and a Critical Commentary (Eng).- Pioneering new Urtext edition- Informative text on the genesis and reception history of the two compositions (Ger/Fr/Eng)- Detailed Critical Commentary (Eng) / Violoncelle Et Piano

Brahms completed his Cello Sonata op. 99 during the productive summer of 1886. The first public performance took place in Vienna on 24 November of the same year. Robert Hausmann played the cello part and the composer himself was his partner at the piano. Even though the work was generally received positively, it took some years until it was fully appreciated and gained its irrevocable place in the cello repertoire.Of particular value to the editors were the two early performance editions of the Cello Sonata op. 99 by Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg, as well as by Julius Klengel. Both cellists, Becker and Klengel, had a connection to Brahms who very much admired and trusted Becker's playing and who performed together with Klengel. This edition not only incorporates Becker's and Klengel's performance markings but also Hausmann's for whom the piece was written. As such, the Barenreiter edition comes with a cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms' contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked Urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive Preface. Firstly it informs about the work's origin, early performances, its publication as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms' death, a widening gulf developed between the composer's expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. In a very concrete and practical way, the editors summarize some of the key issues in understanding Brahms' notation with regard to rhythm and timing, dynamics and accentuation, dots and strokes, slurring and non legato, piano pedalling and overholding, piano arpeggiation and dislocation, string instrument fingering, string instrument harmonics and vibrato. In this way, the edition offers an exciting and often surprising insight into Romantic musical interpretation.- A pioneering Urtext edition- With an unmarked Urtext part- With a second part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of contemporaries of Brahms- With an extensive Performance Practice Commentary- For further information on Romantic performance practice we recommend the text booklet: 'Performance Practices in Johannes Brahms' Chamber Music?, BA 9600 / Violoncelle Et Piano

The first three movements of Johannes Brahms' E minor Cello Sonata were composed in 1862, the last movement was written in 1865. During the first years of its performance the work was received with mixed enthusiasm. By the end of Brahms' life, however, it was widely performed and by the first decades of the 20th century it was firmly embedded in the repertoire of many distinguished cellists. It was notably Robert Hausmann's advocacy of the work which seems to have contributed greatly to its promotion.Of particular value to the editors were the three early performance editions of the Cello Sonata op. 38 by Cornelius van Vliet and Edwin Hughes, Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg, as well as Julius Klengel. The cellists' van Vliet, Becker and Klengel's fingering and bowing allows for a better understanding of their performance practice. Par POULENC FRANCIS / GENDRON. Born in Paris in 1899, Francis Poulenc soon became a notable composer and pianist. His Serenade, originally composed in 1925-1926 for Voice and Piano, met much success as part of his Bawdy Songs. Therefore, it was well-received when Maurice Gendron transcribed it for Cello and Piano. Poulenc, as a member of Les Six, composed music in a style contrary to that of Richard Wagner and impressionists Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Serenade reflects the composer's contrasting style, making use of a 6/8 time signature, double stops, variations in articulation and wide range on the Cello. Born into a family of bankers that had lived in Florence since the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) studied under Pizzetti at the city'
s Conservatoire. He soon became one of the leading members of the young Italian school, which broke with the tyranny of bel canto to return to the instrumental tradition of the Italian masters from the Baroque era.
In 1928, Amédée-Landély Hettich, a vocal teacher in Paris, asked Castelnuovo-Tedesco to write a vocalise for the Répertoire moderne de Vocalises-E
tudes, the publication of which he was supervising at Leduc. Castelnuovo-Tedesco'
s contribution, entitled Vocalise-E
tude for Medium Voice, became so popular that it was immediately transcribed several times over.
The present adaptation for cello and piano, was created, with prior consent from the composer, by the famous Catalan cellist Gaspar Cassadó in 1930. The works opens with a poignant lamento that grieves the tragic fate of the Jewish people- it is followed by a folk dance whose '
brisk and stubborn” movement marks, with panache, an imperious refusal to yield to resignation. The composer adopted the same proactive stance himself when in 1939, fleeing Mussolini'
s antisemitic laws, he decided to emigrate to the United States, a land of refuge to which he would remain faithful until his death some thirty years later./ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

Soon after its composition in 1886, Camille Saint-Saëns asked Auguste Durand that Le Carnaval des animaux, which he thought of as a parodic fantasia, should only appear in print posthumously. He probably believed that this entertainment would tarnish the seriousness of the rest of his oeuvre. The Carnaval was therefore published in February 1922, two months after the composer's death. Nevertheless the composer contravened the restrictions he had imposed: in 1886 Charles-Joseph Lebouc obtained the authorization to make and publish a transcription for piano and cello of the penultimate piece in this musical bestiary: no.13, Le Cygne . This arrangement, which became a bravura piece for cello, was an immense success each listener compelled to imagine a majestic swan gliding across a lake , a success which Saint-Saëns was obliged to accept. / Violoncelle / Durand

Revisione Sull'Autografo Di Rina You. Par PILATI MARIO. The artistic production of the Neapolitan composer Mario Pilati (Naples, 1903-1938) has recently been undergoing a reappraisal. Having died at a young age, he never had the opportunity to gain the recognition he deserved, and much of his music has, in fact, fallen into oblivion. Less well-known than his Sonata in La (Sonata in A major) written a few years later for the same formation, his Sonata per violoncello e pianoforte (Sonata in D major for cello and piano) was composed in 1922 when the composer was nineteen years old, in the ninth year of his compositional studies in the class of Maestro Antonio Savasta. The Sonata, based on the opening of a piece by Carl Reinecke, is in sonata form, and develops over a single movement. In the piece, which has got clear post-romantic connotations, the expressive vein, singing lines and lyricism that would also distinguish Pilati’s later works can already be heard. / Niveau : Intermédiaire / Date parution : 1905-07-10/ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

Par CHAUSSON ERNEST. Chausson's 'Piece Op.39', the composer's only work for solo cello, was written during his final years and belongs with the intensity lyrical Poeme for violin and orchestra (1896) and the two quartets (1897 and 1899). Like these more 'classical' late works, 'Piece' derives potency from its restrained lyricism, but is rhythmically unusual with 5/4 and 7/4 the predominant time signatures. Par DEBUSSY CLAUDE. This piece dates originally from May 1882, when Debussy made his first public appearance as a composer, at a musical soirée in Paris accompanying the violinist Maurice Thieberg. Among the other works performed on that occasion was a Nocturne and Scherzo for violin and piano by the 19-year-old composer, which has since disappeared.
In June Debussy made a new version for cello and piano, which survives in autograph manuscript and is published here - in this new edition by the musicologist and cellist Neil Heyde - for the first time.
Although the title implies two separate pieces, the Nocturne et Scherzo is a hybrid piece, in which the opening Scherzo material surrounds a cantabile episode of nocturnal character.

Composed in 1888 for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts, the work became an enormous success early on. There are numerous arrangements - but the only versions for which the autograph manuscripts survive are those for Violin and Piano (HN 1188), Piano solo (HN 1190) and Violoncello and Piano. Up to now there has only been an arrangement of the cello part made by the original publisher, presumably with Elgar's approval. Original Version - Edition for Cello and Piano. Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. Schumann’s Cello Concerto Rediscovered
In her first Urtext edition for Edition Peters, internationally renowned cellist Josephine Knight reveals Robert Schumann’s original version of his Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 – a piece he actually called a ‘Concertstück’ – removing generations of inauthentic editorial interventions. This is the only available modern scholarly edition of the work as Schumann originally conceived it, and restores the text from October 1850, based on the composer’s manuscript held in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Kraków. This Full Score matches the separately available edition for Cello and Piano (EP 73488). Matching orchestral material is also available from the publisher.

Robert Schumann’s tragic last years have mired many of his greatest works in unnecessary doubt. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann’s original conception of the work – not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann’s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists.
Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann’s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann’s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann’s musical text, free of posthumous interventions.
‘My ultimate wish,’ says the editor, ‘is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be. I found that incorporating the changes enabled the piece to take on a completely different character – one that is lighter and happier, even “cheerful”, as Schumann himself described the work.'/ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

piano reduction with solo part. Par SHCHEDRIN RODION. Shchedrin’s œuvre spans nearly every musical genre, and it is hardly surprising that an output of such versatility contains some rather remarkable instrumental combinations, for example “Music from afar” for 2 bass recorders, or “Balalaika” for a solo violin playing pizzicato throughout.
This predilection for the unusual leads the composer in “Parabola concertante” with its basically subdued and contemplative mood to add a charcteristic counterpoint by contrasting the accompanying string orchestra with timpani. The piece was composed for master virtuoso Mstislav Rostropovitch, who played the solo part in the first performance at the International Cello Festival in Kronberg./ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

Par WINTERBERG HANS. Hans Winterberg, born in Prague in 1901, lived through almost the entire period of the 20th century and was influenced as a composer by its most important artistic innovations. Already a brilliant pianist as an adolescent, he studied with Alois Hába and Alexander von Zemlinsky in Prague. Both his life and his music reflect the Austrian-Czech-Jewish cultural symbiosis; he saw himself as a bridge builder between Western and Eastern, i.e. Slavic, cultures. Owing to his Jewish ancestry, he was deported to the Terezin concentration camp after the annexation of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany. He was the only Jewish representative of the Czech musical avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s to survive the Shoah and, in 1947, followed his non-Jewish wife and their daughter to the FRG in the course of the expulsion of the German-speaking population from Czechoslovakia. Winterberg's fascinating oeuvre, which was kept under lock and key in a German music archive for years after his death, is now being made accessible in first editions due to a cooperation between the Exilarte Center for Banned Music at the University of Music in Vienna and Boosey & Hawkes. The first printed edition is Winterberg's Cello Sonata, composed in 1951, in which all the characteristics of his unmistakable personal style come to the fore: dance-like energy, polyrhythm, intimate yet unsentimental melos, subtle handling of folkloristic material, and an unerring sense of form and balance. This work is of medium technical and great interpretative difficulty. / Date parution : 2024-01-06/ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

Born in Erfurt, the composer Edward Mollenhauer (1827-1914) achieved success in America as a soloist and teacher. His best-known pieces for young violinists are 'The Infant Paganini? and 'The Boy Paganini?.Both appear here in their original version for violin and piano and, for the first time, in a transcription for cello and piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus. The Mollenhauer fantasia 'The Infant Paganini? is a charming introduction to early virtuoso techniques. It calls for bowing techniques such as detaché, legato, spiccato and arpeggios over three strings. Players are also expected to play harmonics and pizzicato. This showpiece (BA 10691) can be accomplished by young violinists who can play in first to third position and who are nearing completion of the Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Violin, volume 4.It (BA 10693) can be equally mastered by young cello students who are working with volume 4 of the Sassmannshaus 'Early Start on the Cello? and can manage first to fourth position.'The Boy Paganini? is an impressive concert piece which is more demanding. Its two movements call for changes of metre, harmonics and pizzicato. Other challenges include chords on all four strings and simple passages in octaves. On the violin (BA 10692), the technical requirements call for first to fifth position whereas on the cello (BA 10694), the student must be able to play in first to fourth position. Both violinists and cellists should have completed volume 4 of 'Early Start on the Violin? and 'Early Start on the Cello? respectively in order to master this work. - Popular recital pieces for young violinists and cellists- Both works form an ideal continuation of the Sassmannshaus 'Early Start? methods- Pieces originally scored for violin now also available for the first time for cello / Violoncelle Et Piano
