Robert
Saxton 's Hortus Musicae
, Book 1 was commissioned
by Ian Richie for the
2013 City of London
Festival with funds
provided by the John S.
Cohen Foundation. The
first performance was
given by Clare Hammond on
June 24th 2013 at the
church of St Mary Le Bow.
The title, less 'literal'
in Latin than in the
vernacular, refers to the
idea of an
allegorical/metaphysical
garden (reference to a
'real', or existing,
garden might be implied
by Hortus Musicus) with
various facets. The
titles of the individual
pieces/movements, with
their respective garden
image, are as follows: 1)
Hortus Somniorum: a
fleeting vision of a
'magical' garden 2)
Hortus Temporis: a
reflection of/on the
floralclock described by
Andrew Marvell
(1621-1678) in his
[metaphysical] poem The
Garden: How well the
skilful gardener drew Of
flowers and herbs this
dial new Where from above
the milder sun Does
through a fragrant zodiac
run; And, as it works,
the industrious bee
Computes its time as well
as we. How could such
sweet and wholesome hours
Be reckoned but with
herbs and flowers! 3)
Hortus Cantus: A garden
in which nature 'sings'
(praises), in the manner
of a 'chorale prelude'
and ending with the
cantus firmus transformed
into bells. 4) Hortus
Infinitatis: A
meditative/formal garden
representing Time
suspended, in the form of
a palindromic prolation
canon combined with a
harmonic ground
(chaconne). 5) Saltatio
Hortensis: A (summer)
garden of dancing,
celebratory nature. Its
essence (and that of the
entire cycle, both
metaphorically and
structurally/formally) is
summed up in words spoken
by Miranda in WH Auden's
1944 Tempest
[Shakespeare]-inspired
poem The Sea And The
Mirror; So, to remember
our changing garden, we
Are linked as children in
a circle dancing.

This present
edition follows a double
aim: to assist music
students in getting
acquainted with and
growing fond of the music
in Bach's time on the one
hand and to prepare and
facilitate teaching and
studying Bach's small
preludes, on the other.
To meet the latter
objective the more
difficult dances and
suite movements prove to
be the most suitable. It
is primarily a practical
edition that follows
closely the original
music material. The
original slurring has,
however, been changed due
to teaching purposes and
in the interests of
easier study (in several
cases by omitting the
original or by adding the
most essential phrasing
and articulation slurs).
Suggestions for
tempo,performance,
dynamics and fingering
have also been given. The
eventually unusual
fingering in some places
promotes correct
phrasing, articulation.
Original ornaments that
would pose considerable
difficulties for the
students have been
omitted while the ones
that can eventually be
omitted depending on the
rechnical skill of the
students have benn put in
brackets. In such cases
an easier solution is,
however, always indicated
above the original in
brackets. This does not
exclude naturally that
students capable of
properly executing the
original ornaments of
these works without the
distortrion of the
melkody arches and rhythm
should not play them in
their full, not
simplified form. Piano
students on advanced
level are recommended to
compare the present
edition with other,
original text editions
which disclose ornaments
in their original form.
As an example two pieces
of this collection have
been included in the
appendix in the form they
appear in the original
text edition. This
attempt provides
possibilities both for
the teachers and students
to assess the nature and
extent of editorial
alterations. The name of
the composer has only
been indicated in case
where it could be
unambiguously identified.
Unsere Ausgabe
hat ein doppeltes
Anliegen. Einerseits will
sie den Schülern
helfen, mit der
zeitgenössischen Musik
Bachs bekannt zu werden
und an ihr Gefallen zu
finden, anderseits soll
sie den Unterricht bzw.
das Erlernen der kleinen
Präludien Bachs
vorbereiten und
erleichtern. Für die
letztgenannte Aufgabe
sind die schwierigeren
Tänze und
Suitensätze am
geeignetsten.
Arrangement for

language:
Latin.
Following
his early departure from
the opera stage in 1829,
besides chamber music
Gioachino Rossini
composed only larger
scored works of church
music. The Stabat Mater
is among these. It was
composed in two different
phases between 1831 and
1841 and received its
premiere in Paris in
1842. The text is
fashioned as a prayer
describing Mary's pain in
the face of the crucified
Christ. Time and again
the vivid language of
this text, a Latin poem
probably from the 13th
century, has inspired
settings by composers
including illustrious
names such as Pergolesi,
Joseph Haydn and Verdi.
In 10 movements Rossini
unites different forms
such as aria, duet,
quartet and chorus, an
operatic aria-like style
of writing as well as a
strict a cappella style
resulting in one of the
highpoints of this genre.
For this arrangement, the
vocal score (CV
70.089/03), choral score
(CV 70.089/05) and parts
for strings and timpani
from the original
orchestral version can
also be used. Score
