This little tribute to William Ferris and the William Ferris Chorale consists of two sections, the first slow and the second quick. The text is simply the two words of the title, the Amen being the first section and (with minimal overlap) the Alleluia the second. In each part, the relevant word is gradually built up from its component syllables or sounds, and the second section is a gradual progress from a quiet, light texture to a blazing final cadence. The Maccabaean Revolt in the second century B.C. provided the background to the story that unfolds in Judas Maccabaeus . It is part of the history of the Ptolemaic and Seleucid Empires. This oratorio follows the story from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. up until Judas' march on Jerusalem in 164 B.C. With a libretto supplied by Thomas Morell, Handel's great work was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, on April the 1st, 1747, as part of his annual Lenten season of oratorios. By the time of Handel's death in 1759, Judas Maccabaeus had become the composer's second most popular oratorio, having received 33 London performances under the composer's supervision ( Messiah had 36). Par PART ARVO. Arvo Pärt wrote the prayer of peace 'Da pacem Domine' to fulfil a commission from Jordi Savall. He began to set this ninth-century Gregorian antiphon two days after the Madrid bombings on 11 March 2004 as his personal tribute to the victims. Since then 'Da pacem Domine' has been performed every year in Spain to commemorate the victims of this terrorist attack. Even while originally composing this four-voice piece, Pärt made allowances for variable scorings. As a result, it exists in several versions, not only for voice but also entirely for instruments.
