This piece
opens with three repeated
notes, then a short
introduction leads to a
robust theme from
clarinets, horns and
trombones. A restless
bridge passage leads to a
syncopated tune from the
alto saxophone and then
to a third theme from a
solo euphonium. A
graceful second subject,
initially on a solo
clarinet, leads back to a
recall of the
introductory material
before a full-scale
recapitulation. An
intense allargando
leads to a full-band
version of the second
subject under a running
woodwind passage, which
leads to a short
coda.

The
texts of the French
author Anne-Marie Albiach
have long been the point
of departure for the
works by Feldmann. A
twofold perspective of
the text underlies the
composition Esquisse : <<
le froid >> : on the one
hand, there is a spoken
reading of the text, in
which time of recitation
is measured out, and on
the other hand, there is
a graphic measuring of
the text. The latter
serves as a foundation -
the genetic code - for
the temporal structures
of the solo marimba,
supported arally by the
harp and piano. The
reading appears int the
rhythmic surfaces of the
accompanying ensemble.
Each word of the spoken
text has its own
instrumentation, and thus
a compact network of
instrumental combinations
is created, in which,
word by word, the text is
made audible.

Marcho
Brioso was
commissioned by The
Brioso Brass, a
British-style brass band
from Hokkaido, Japan.
They gave the first
performance in January
2012.The commission was
for a bright and breezy
march that the band could
use as their theme tune,
so Marcho Brioso
falls into the
composer’s series
of Broadway-style
marches, which includes
Slipstream, The
Bandwagon and
Jubiloso. After a
short introduction a solo
cornet plays the main
theme, accompanied by a
euphonium counter-melody.
A secondary phrase from
the horns and baritones
leads to a tutti version
of the main theme which
is followed by the
traditional
‘bass’
strain. A change of key
heralds thetrio section,
which features a
cantabile melody on
euphonium; this is then
taken up by the full band
after a short bridge
passage and further
change of key.This takes
us back to the home key
which sees a quiet
staccato version of the
main theme lead to a
recapitulation and a
short coda which brings
the march to a close.

Colorado
Springs was commissioned
by the United States Air
Force Academy Band,
Lieutenant Steve Grimo,
Commmander/Conductor.
Colorado Springs, home of
the USAF Academy, is set
in spectacular landscape
towards the southern end
of the Rocky Mountains
and is a popular tourist
resort for skiing and
hiking. The Academy plays
an important part in the
life of the area and
serves as a base for the
USAFA Band, one of the
professional bands
forming part of the
musical life of the U.S.
Air Force. The suite is
in three movements: 1.
The Springs (fanfare) -
The Springs is the local
residents' name for the
town, and this first
movement starts with a
stirring fanfare for
brass and percussion,
opening with bold unison
horns. The rest of the
brass join in and
woodwind add decorative
figures. After a short
change of style, the
opening material
reappears to close the
movement. 2. Seven Falls
- Seven Falls is a
spectacular waterfall
near to the town which
cascades 181 feet in
seven distinct steps down
a solid cliff of pikes
peak granite. In this
movement, high woodwinds
describe the sparkling
water as it descends to a
popular lookout post near
the bottom of the falls.
3. Pikes Peak - To the
north-west of the town
and reaching an altitude
14,110 feet, Pikes Peak
is the farthest east of
the big peaks in the
Rocky Mountain chain,
which contributed to its
early fame among
explorers and pioneers,
and made it the symbol of
the 1859 Gold Rush to
Colorado with the slogan,
Pikes Peak or Bust. It is
the second-most visited
mountain in the world
behind Japan's Mount
Fuji. This atmospheric
movement describes the
majesty of the mountain
and is based around the
fanfare from the first
movement. Opening on a
solitary bassoon, it is
not long before the main
theme appears under
bubbling woodwinds. The
music reaches a
passionate climax at
which point the opening
fanfare reappears to
bring the whole work to a
close.

There are just
over twenty secular
cantatas in Bach's
prolific output, which
include The Coffee
Cantata (No 211), The
Wedding Cantata (No 202),
Phoebus and Pan (No 201)
and the Hunt Cantata (No
208) which contains the
famous aria Sheep May
Safely Graze. Written for
four vocal soloists it
was originally scored for
a relatively large
orchestra (including
flutes (recorders), oboes
and horns) and mixed
choir. Although secular
in character, the words
describe how well a
faithful shepherd keeps
watch over his flock and
hence has obvious
allusions to the
teachings of the
Christian church. Bring a
bit of the Baroque era to
your concert with this

Later volgdenbewerkingen
voor vergelijkbare
verjaardagsfeesten en
naamdagen. De cantate is
geschreven voor vier
solisten (Diana, Pales,
Endymion en Pan), een
relatief groot orkest

hobo’s en hoorns)
en koor. Sheep
MaySafely Graze wordt
gezongen door Pales, de
godin van kudden en
weiden, begeleid door een
paar blokfluiten of
dwarsfluiten. Deze
bewerking van Philip
Sparke betekent een
verrijking voor elk
repertoire.

The Requiem
of Gabriel Faure is now
available in two
versions: in the
symphonic version which
was completed in 1900 and
in a version with small
orchestra of 1889. The
symphonic version of
Gabriel Faure's Requiem,
published in 1901, was
the product of a 13-year
compositional process.
Starting from the
original five-movement
form for strings, harp
and organ, the composer
wrote two additional
movements, one after the
other, and expanded the
instrumentation in
various stages for later
performances. The present
reconstruction of a
version with small
orchestra differs from
other such attempts in
that for the first time
it presents the work not
in a mixed version, but
rather in the unified
form from 1889. This is
distinguished from the
final version both in
musical terms, as well as
through the fact that it
forgoes the use of
flutes, clarinets and
bassoons, while employing
only two horns instead of
four. With a critical
Report with information
about the source
situation and the
edition, and containing
the individual readings
(alternative readings,
etc.). Since in 1889 the
Offertoire was still
without the choral
section the present
edition contains the
Offertoire of the final
version as appendix. Now
available in carus music,
the choir app. Score
available separately -
see item CA.2731100.
