Mozart
composed his two
â??Lodron Serenadesâ?
for open-air performances
on the name day of
Countess Antonia Lodron
in June 1776 and 1777.
Their bright â??al
frescoâ? character is
immediately recognisable.
Alfred Einstein
considered these two
divertimentos to be
â??among the purest,
gayest, most satisfying,
and most perfect that
ever assumed musical
formâ?.
For
both works Mozart chose
an ensemble of two horns,
two violins, viola and
bass instruments.
However, the second
Lodron Serenade, the
Divertimento in B-flat
major K. 287, stands out
from this sextet format
by assigning a remarkably
virtuosic solo role to
the first violin, from
the richly diverse
opening movement to the
finale with its almost
ironic recitative and an
exhilarating passage on
the folk song
â??Dâ??Bäurin hat
dâ??Katz verlornâ?.
Mozart himself played
first violin in the 1777
performance. Later he
wrote, â??They all
opened their eyes! I
played as though I were
the finest fiddler in all
Europeâ?.

Beethoven
described his grandly
conceived â??Missa
solemnisâ? as â??my
greatest workâ? and
sold manuscript copies to
some of the subscribers
even before it had
appeared in
print.
This Urtext
edition takes into
account all the sources
including the old and the
new complete editions
whose relationship is
clearly explained in a
stemma. In several
passages the renowned
Beethoven specialist
Barry Cooper has arrived
at variant readings, such
as in the
â??Sanctusâ?, where
the choir enters instead
of the soloists, rather
than coming in at
â??Pleni sunt
coeliâ?. No less
worthy of mention is the
addition of the soloists
to the choir in most of
the â??Credoâ?. These
matters and many other
editorial decisions are
documented in the
detailed Critical
Commentary
(Eng).
The
appendix contains
Beethovenâ??s
arrangement of the
Gregorian chant
â??Tantum ergoâ? for
the first time. This was
composed at the same time
as the â??Missa
solemnisâ? and most
probably stands in a
close relation to
it.
This edition
is designed for everyone
seeking a combination of
a reliable musical text
and well-founded
editorial suggestions for
a successful performance
of this
masterpiece.

The
general inspiration for
the music was an idea of
Durham, garnered from two
or three short visits and
a reading of a short
history - so a sort of
Durham of the mind, a
stylized Durham; 'my'
Durham, if you will,
imagined into music.
However, the
defininginspiration for
the piece was the
Cathedral. My first visit
to Durham in 2001 saw me
standing open-mouthed on
Palace Green, and then in
silent awe as I walked
into that formidable
magnificence inside. Most
of the themes came from
the days immediately
following my first
experience of this
extraordinary, inspiring
building. The feeling
that the very stones and
pillars themselves are
imbued with centuries of
prayer, withpeople's joy,
grief, despair, even
anger; gratitude and
hope. As the tunes and
chords and sounds started
to organize themselves in
my mind and onto
manuscript paper, I
realized that I was
writing a sort of day in
the life of Durham, and
that the Cathedral
wouldbe its beginning,
would be in its middle,
and would be at its
ending. The piece
consists of six
'pictures' arranged into
three parts - the
morning, afternoon and
evening of this imaginary
Durham city. Jon Lord,

Feature
anywhere from one
Saxophone up to the
entire Sax section in
Stephen Bulla’s
jazzy new arrangement
titled Swingin’ at
the Riverside. The quick,
rhythmic swing-style
music is catchy to say
the least! It’s
the perfect opportunity
to “lighten
up†during the next
concert performance. In
addition, it’s a
good piece to program
just before or after that
large work that’s
taxing for the Brass
players. It’s lots
of fun for Brasses to
play but gives them
plenty of short rests
throughout so they can
refresh their chops.
Now’s the time to
let the Saxes
shine!Light-hearted
and fun!
Dit
is een lekker vlot en
swingend werk waarin een
hoofdrol is weggelegd
voor de saxofoon. De
interactie tussen het
orkest en de solist(en)
is leuk en boeiend voor
zowel de muzikanten als
het publiek. De titel
Swingin’at the
Riversideis
natuurlijk een zinspeling
op de alom bekende
spiritual Down by the
Riverside, die te
horen is terwijl de
muziek zich ontvouwt. Een
levendige aanvulling op
uw eerstvolgende
concertprogramma!
Rücken Sie einen
Saxophonisten oder auch
das ganze Register ins
Rampenlicht - mit Stephen
Bullas jazzigen Titel
Swingin’ at the
Riverside haben Sie
die Wahl! Die flotte,
swingende rhythmische
Musik ist absolut
eingängig, ein
strahlendes Highlight
für jedes
Konzertprogramm!
Idealerweise planen Sie
dieses Stück nach
einem für die
Blechbläser
anstrengenden
Programmpunkt ein, da sie
hier zwar auch jede Menge
Spaß, aber auch
genügend Pausen haben.
Nun sind die Saxophone
dran!
Questo brano di
Stephen Bulla nasce dallo
swing e combina con
originalit uno dei più
grandi successi del jazz
di New Orleans, Down
by the Riverside.
L’accompagnamento
è brillante ed i
solisti semplicemente
sfavillanti!

The
Complete Vocal Works
Johann Pachelbel is known
today as a composer of
organ music and of a
world-famous instrumental
canon which frequently
features in concert
programmes and recording
catalogues. However, the
same can be said of only
a few of his vocal
compositions. At most,
the motets appear
occasionally in church
music repertoire.
Pachelbel’s arias,
vocal concerti and
large-scale Magnificats
have received little
attention up to now.
Church musicians and
musicologists have long
wished for a critical
edition of these
important works, which
survive in
Pachelbel’s
manuscript and were
largely composed in his
main places of work,
Erfurt and Nuremberg . As
always with such
ventures, new discoveries
are to be expected
regarding the body of
works, source material
and the context of the
works. This concerns not
only beautiful music, but
rather a deepening of our
understanding of
Pachelbel as a key figure
between southern and
central German
traditions, and the
recognition of an oeuvre
which has all too often
been pushed into the
shadows by the mighty
Bach.
The
Critical Edition
The edition aims to make
available all of Johann
Pachelbel’s
surviving vocal works in
the best possible form.

authorship is doubtful
appear at the end of the
respective group.

In 1828 Berlioz
wrote the Huit scènes
de Faust. The work was
soon withdrawn but almost
twenty years later each
of the eight scenes found
a place in the Lgende
dramatique La damnation
de Faust dedicated to
Franz Liszt. The first
part of the Damnation
exposes the figure of
Faust and has an
introductory nature. From
the second part onwards,
the course of action is
largely based on
Goethe’s
drama.
Contrasting
characters and dramatic
effect are of central
importance in
understanding
Berlioz’s musical
thought and his
compositional process.
Magic and fairy tale,
incantations and ghosts,
have been the
ever-recurring themes of
opera since the Baroque.
It is precisely this
fantasy in Berlioz's
Faust, the “Opra de
Concert en Quatre
actsâ€, which comes
very close to the spirit
of Goethe's
presentation.

This

Practice in Music Theory
Grade 6 comes complete
with detachable Model
Answers! The success of
its previous editions for
the past two decades has
prompted the need for
more definitive
solutions. Based on the
ABRSM theory examination
syllabus, it is the first
of three comprehensive
coursebooks leading to
Grade 8 and beyond.
Students are guided to
achieve a high
theoretical standard,
with competent knowledge
in harmony, counterpoint,
melodic writing and score
analysis. The J Koh's
instructional approach is
academic and systematic;
yet musically conceived
with graphical layouts
and selective examples.
There are 2 parts to this
coursebook. Part I -
Harmony The principles of
harmony are introduced
here: 4-part writing,
2-part counterpoint,
concepts of traditional
chord progression, use of
inversions, principles of
voice-leading, and the
use of non-harmony notes.
Harmonic guidelines and
rules are clearly
explained with relevant
examples. Exercises are
progressively structured
to ensure a strong grasp
of the theoretical
concepts. Part II -
Melodic Composition and
Analysis Meloic
composition is taught
through an analytical
approach. The concepts of
phrasing, use of motifs,
modulations and melodic
contour are illustrated
with authentic extracts.
By taking students
through the works of the
great masters, their
technical skills are
sharpened, enhanced with
useful tools for the
creative compositional
process. Skills in score
analysis involve the
acquisition of sound
musical knowledge - the
study of forms, genres,
history of western music
that spans 4 centuries,
along with the
composersÂ’ works and
styles. Appendices II and
III provide guidance for
basic research needed at
this level. The essential
and highly recommended
reference texts are:
Musical Forms and Terms

Orchestration, The
Orchestra and Its
Instruments.
