is the French word for
“diptych,â€
meaning a hinged two-part
image. The first section
of this two-part musical
painting has an Oriental
feel, with characteristic
pentatonic melody lines
and chords. The second
section is a cheerful
Saltarello dance that
brings out the subtleties
of the woodwind section.
A juxtaposition of
Eastern and Western
music, Diptyque
reminds listeners of the
power of music in
transcending all
cultural, religious and
political
boundaries.

Singapore
Rhapsody is an exciting
work in two movements
based on popular
Malaysian folksongs. The
songs that occur in the
first movement are Rasa
Sayang eh (a love song),
Gelang Sipaku Gelang (a
song about community
spirit), Suriram (a song
about a girl proclaiming
her virtues) and
Di-Tanjung Katong (a love
song that takes place at
the Cape Katong on the
southeast coast of
Singapore). The second
movement features
Lenggang Kangkung, which
literally means
“The swaying of the
watercress,†Katang
Lompat (a moralistic song
about the symbolism of
the frog) and finally
Kenek kenek-lah Udang (a
wedding song). Each
movement of this
enchanting work can be
performed separately but
acomplete performance
will be the crowning
moment of any concert.

s Sallinen (b. 1935) is
one of the most famous
Finnish contemporary
composers. In his early
instrumental works,
Sallinen was still
seeking to establish a
style of his own. He had
studied at the Sibelius
Academy in the late
1950s, first with Aarre
Merikanto - a composer
representing a national
brand of Neoclassicism -
and then with Joonas
Kokkonen, at that time
just transitioning from
Neoclassicism to
dodecaphony. Twelve-tone
music had won fairly
widespread acceptance in
contemporary Finn-ish
music, and Sallinen was
influenced, too. The
Variations are Sallinen's
first real work for the
cello - an instrument
that would later be one
of his favourites, its
warm, deep voice
corres-ponding to his
music's often dark
undercurrent.
The Variations for Cello
and Orchestra, Op. 5 were
composed in 1961-1962 and
premiered in October
1962. The basic motif
consists of a set of
three descending
intervals stated by the
cello at the beginning:
D-D flat-F, C-B-G and B
flat-A-F sharp. Their use
as basic material is a
ref-lection of the
composer's
dodecaphony-oriented
period, and variation of
this material provides
the framework for the
piece.
Variations for Cello and
Orchestra are now
published for the first
time. Available are a
reduction for cello and
piano, study score and
complete performance
material with
orchestra.

In this
piece, commissioned by
the WDR and premiered by
the Quatuor Diotima in
Witten in 2016, Johannes
Boris Borowski shows
that, to him, the string
quartet genre is a
rewarding field of
experimentation despite
any past history: A
separate architecture
emerges from the
contrasting of noise and
sound-oriented music, an
architecture which causes
either rather active or
rather passive listening,
depending on the music's
consistency. The composer
got his extra-musical
inspiration from
Dostoyevsky's 'The
Brothers Karamasov': Its
hypnotic detailed drama,
the rhythmic change in
narrative perspective and
the interconnection of
crime, development and
romantic novel creates a
similar audience
expectation.

Blaserbande is a
completely newly
developed concept for
class and group lessons
with woodwind and brass
instruments. It is
primarily aimed at
children of primary
school age and is the
result of intensive
cooperation with music
schools, brass bands and
primary schools. The
tonal range is the same
for all instruments, so
that all songs and voices
can be worked through
together. Numerous
exercises on approach,
posture, intonation and
register play,
accompanying audio
playbacks and a large
pool of playing pieces
open up new perspectives
for the wind class, from
small group lessons to
representative school
auditions and concerts.
With the Blaserbande we
now have a well
thought-out concept for
young brass and woodwind
players that promises
methodically meaningful
and musically interesting
class instruction. We can
look forward to the

Dessau's
String Quartet movement
was written while he was
also working on Brecht's
opera Puntila. After
Brecht's death in 1956
Dessau found himself
looking for a new
direction. On the one
hand he was still working
on music begun in
collaboration with the
poet, while on the other
hand Dessau was trying to
work towards a socially
oriented musical
aesthetic, which led him
to compose songs for
political purposes. Even
this Quartet movement
does not owe its
inspiration purely to an
artistic vision. In spite
of its technical demands,
the piece is intended to
be comprehensible and
could even be played by
an amateur ensemble in
its cleverly reduced
form. Only discovered
after the composer's
death, the Movement for
String Quartet is
published for the first
time in this edition.
