and 19th centuries the
church-music form of
expression per se. So,
choral singing and choral
music played a dominant
role in the 19th century
for the Bach revival.
Though in many places the
political and social
upheavals of the
Napoleonic era brought
some traditional musical
institutions to an end,
the St. Thomas School
with its music boarding
school at Leipzig was
able to hold its ground
and - thanks to a lengthy
reorganizational process
- dovetail with the
Gewandhaus Orchestra,
which had in turn arisen
from a middle-class
society. For the 800th
anniversary in 2012 of
the Leipzig St. Thomas
Choir, a symposium was
devoted to the
institutional and musical
transformation of choral
traditions during this
time period. The volume

Brahms' first Piano
Concerto was the fruit of
a complex, protracted,
and extremely trying
creative process. Its
origin goes back to a
sonata in D minor for two
pianos conceived in
spring 1854. The impulse
for the creation of the
main subject was however
a shocking event:
According to Joseqph
Joachim, the theme
originated after hearing
about Schumanns suicide
attempt. A few months
earlier, Schumann had
revealed Brahms to the
musical world in his
essay New Paths. In this
article, Brahms is
extolled as the musician
who is called to give
expression to the feeling
of his times in an ideal
fashion. The unusually
rapid genesis of the
D-minor sonata and its
prevailingly dark,
monumental mood can be
interpreted as an
impassioned compositional
response to Schumann's
suicide attempt. However,
the year-long struggle to
arrive at the final form
of the work should
perhaps also be seen in
the context of the
resounding praise of
Schumann's prophetic
article. Brahms undoubtly
felt a growing inner
pressure to live up to
the expectations aroused
therein.Together with
Clara Schumann, Brahms
played the three so far
existing movements of the
sonata, but he was very
self-critical. He felt
that he had not been able
to realize the
monumentality he had
envisioned, and which
Clara Schumann felt, by
merely doubling the piano
sound. He soon decided to
transform the sonata into
a symphony (his first
orchestral project).
However, this idea did
not seem to fit his
vision either. Only in
spring 1855 did he strike
upon the definitive
solution: a piano
concerto. With Brahms as
soloist, this concerto
premiered in 1859, though
he initially had little
success. He wrote to
Joachim about one of the
first performances that
the concerto was a
brilliant and
unmistakable - failure.
This hardly surprised
Brahms, for he was
undoubtedly aware of the
newness of the work,
which surpassed the
expectations of the
audience. The work's
complex structure and
symphonic dimensions, the
solo part's rejection of
showy, elegant
brilliance, and the
uniquely Brahmsian
orchestral density it
maintains throughout; all
of these qualities
inevitably exasperated
audiences at first -
until they raised this
work to the ranks of the
most celebrated concertos
of all time.

This
series of easy piano
music for teaching
purposes presents pupils
in the lower and lower
middle grades with a
carefully chosen
selection of well-known
and lesserknown
compositions by important

years, Mozart composed a
large number of German
Dances for orchestra.
This music for daily use
of the time - intended
functionally, for dancing
and entertainment - is
distinguished by
enchanting ideas and
simple textures. The
editor has tried to cany
over the instrumental
subtleties into the
piano-duet writing. These
dances are particularly
suitable for introducing
some relaxation into the
learning of the piano,
for the interpretative
and technical workingout
demanded by Mozart's
original piano-duet works
is not required to the
same degree here. The
marks of expression have
been taken over from the
original score and in
part supplemented. Notes
not marked otherwise are
to be played non legato.

Strauss (1864-1949) wrote
his VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D
MINOR, Op. 8, between
1881 and 1882, and it
remained his only foray
in that genre. Composed
while a teenager and
still in school. While
still very much a product
of the Romantic era
tradition, the work is
not considered as
distinctive as the works
he would produce only a
few years later, and
Strauss himself later
ridiculed the work.
Still, with inventive and
bold writing in the solo
and hints of his mature
harmonic style to come,
there is much to enjoy in
the work, including its
warmth, youthful
sincerity, and lyrical
expression, so that it
should not be dismissed
as mere juvenilia, either
by contemporary audiences
or Strauss himself. The
chamber version of the
concerto was first
performed in Vienna on
December 5, 1882, with
the dedicatee Benno
Walter on the violin
while Strauss played his
own piano reduction. The
premiere for the
orchestral version would
take place seven years
later in Cologne on March
4, 1890, with Walter
again performing the solo
with an orchestra
conducted by Franz
Wüllner.

the most significant
eighteenth-century solo
works for unaccompanied
flute, yet they could
hardly be more distinct
from each other in both
form and style. The
Partita, rediscovered in
1917, clearly follows J.
S. Bach's style in its
form, depth, style, and
structure. The Sonata was
published in 1763, and is
to be played in a much
more sensitive and
expressive way than the
Partita. It is a highly
dramatic work using
extremities of dynamic
range, wide intervals,
and carefully thought-out

This work,
written by Maxwell Davies
in 1983 for chamber
orchestra, was
commissioned to celebrate
the quartercentenary of
Edinburgh University. The
first performance was
given by the Scottish
Chamber Orchestra
conducted by Edward
Harper in October 1983.

work was thought through
in outline following a
visit to the ruined
pre-Reformation church of
Hoy in Orkney, on a fine
Spring afternoon after
Maxwell Davies had played
the harmonium for the
tiny congregation in its
large bleak Victorian
replacement. The old
church was surrounded by
the graves of centuries,
the more recent ones with
familiar names, largely
of people who lived in
houses now ruinous -
crofters, fishermen,
clerics, sea-captains.
Next to it stood the
chief farmhouse, the Bu,
going back to Viking
times. He thought of the
lives and deaths
encompassed there,
expressed through
hundreds of years of
music in the church, and
in the big barn of the
farm. The plainsongs
'Dies Irae' and 'Victimae
Paschali Laudes' are used
throughout the work - the
first concerning the Day
of Judgement, from the
Mass for the Dead, the
second particular to
Easter Sunday and the
Resurrection. These are
subject to constant
transformation - the
intervallic contour
slowly changes from one
into the other, and their
notes are made to dance
through Renaissance
astrological 'magic
square' patterns. The
orchestra consists of
double woodwind, two
horns, two trumpets and
strings.

Paxton was one of the
most important English
composers for the cello
in the transitional
period between the
Baroque and Classical
eras. As the cello
repertoire does not
feature many very early
Classical works his
Sonatas op. 3, written
for amateur cellists and
students, fill a
significant gap in
tuition repertoire. This
three-movement Sonata op.
3/3 is very well suited
to the cello and
distinguished by its
elegant and appealing
melodies. The sonata can
be played using the first
four finger positions. As
a cellist Paxton was very
familiar with the
technical capabilities of
his instrument and knew
how to make it sing with
simple and effective
figures. The first
movement consists of two
sections and has an
expressive middle section
in C minor. The slow
movement uses an Irish
folk song ('Gramachree'),
with two dance movements
(Minuet 1 and 2) at the
end.This new edition
reproduces all the
details of the first
printed version, with
just a few dynamic
markings added in square
brackets. The bass part
has been written out in
the style of an early
Classical keyboard
accompaniment so as to
underline the galant
rococo style of the
piece.
