Ignaz Franz Biber is
unjustly less recognized
as a composer of sacred
music. His works for
Salzburg Cathedral were
mainly written after
1670. The Stabat Mater is
an impressive setting for
use in worship, and
includes four or six
verses of the hymn. The
four-part composition
displays great simplicity
yet stunning beauty,
particularly in the
concise contrapuntal
presentation of each

Babcock has composed and
edited 50 amazing duets
in alto clef for
Trombones. These duets
can be performed on Tenor
or Alto Trombones and are
a great way to ease into
alto clef being that they
are progressive. The goal
of this book is to
provide an enjoyable
vehicle for learning and
practicing in a new clef.
Some of the duets are
original compositions by
Babcock and some are
arrangements of Baroque
and Classical
composers. Duets 1-30
are all one-page or less
in length and duets 31-50
are all two pages in
length. As the book
progresses, there are
more difficult key and
time signatures, more
challenging technique and
in the later duets some
cadenzas. There is a
wide variety of styles
and forms throughout the
book. The final six duets
are arrangements of
concertos and sonatas
originally written for
the Alto Trombone (the
top part containing the
original part), including
works by Albrechtsberger,
Fux, Wagenseil and
Michael Haydn.

re-discovered in a
sketchbook recently given
to the library of
Brussels' Koninklijk
Conservatorium and is now
published for the first
time. The Sonate posthume

movement. In 1959,
Richard Lane was
twenty-six years old and
he wrote his first of
eleven piano sonatas. At
the time, he had just
finished serving in the
US Army as a musician and
was selected to be an
inaugural member of the
Young Composers Project,
which was sponsored by
the Ford Foundation. As
part of this project,
Lane was assigned to
compose music for the
secondary level (public
schools) in Rochester,
New York, where he
previously graduated from
the Eastman School of
Music. In 1959, Lane
composed twenty pieces,
seven of which were for
the Rochester public
schools, ranging from
choral and orchestral
works. The remaining
thirteen pieces which
Lane wrote at this time
were vocal and
instrumental solos, as
well as other orchestral
and choral works, and one
opera. Of the twenty
pieces, three of them
were for solo piano,
including the Piano
Sonata 1.

This
sonata (WeissSW No. 15,
London) is one of a new
series of eight sonatas
by Silvius Leopold Weiss
arranged for the first
time for guitar and
published by Metropolis
Music. Sonata X comes
from Weissâ??s middle
â??productiveâ??
period, thought to have
taken place between 1719
and 1725. The original
tablature manuscript is
in the British Library
(London Ms. Add. 30387).
The Sonata has six
movements: Allemande,
Courante, Paisane,
Sarabande, Menuet, and it
ends with a Gigue. There
is a another copy of this
Sonata in the Warszawa
Biblioteka Uniwersytecka
Poland (in its entirety),
and a copy in the
Sächsisches
Landesbibliothek in
Dresden (Suite XXVI),
which contains three
concordant movements:
Allemande, Courante, and
the Gigue. The Dresden
manuscript displays some
differences from the
London manuscript. This
Edition has taken those
differences into account
in certain details.
Originally, the Sonata is
written in B flat major,
a key often used by Weiss
as it is appropriate for
playing the lute, but
rather awkward with the
guitar. For ease and
effectiveness of playing,
I have transposed the
Sonata a minor third
lower to G major. To
create more concordance
with the baroque tuning
of the lute, the G string
is lowered by a semitone
to F sharp. I suggest
using a capodastro to
achieve the original
pitch. Based on the
present standard of A at
440 Hertz, the capo
should be placed at the
3rd fret. However, during
Weissâ??s lifetime, it
was more common in many
parts of Germany to use a
standard of A at 415
Hertz -â? a semitone
lower. So, to hear the
pitch heard by Weiss and
his contemporaries, the
capo should then be
positioned at the 2nd
fret.
