The 3rd
String Quartet was
originally composed in
1982-3 to a commission
from The Adelaide
Festival, and premiered
by The Petra Quartet in
1983. Subsequent to this
quartet, I have composed
two more; No. 4 in 1986
and No. 5 in 2002.The
offer to re-publish this
work, led me to begin by
a process of amendment,
but ended in the
composition of a
virtually new quartet!
Only parts of the
original quartet have
been retained. I also
chose to 'frame' (in my
case this means an
inspirational focus and
filter), the quartet in a
new way too.In Flight
Music keeps the
4-movement format of the
original quartet, but is
now directly linked to a
life-long interest in
flight. The first two
movements are concerned
with aspects of humans in
flight, whilst the last
two deal with insects and
birds respectively.Since
all my music is these
days preceded by
visualisations in the
form of drawings,
wherever possible, this
quartet might be
performed with the four
drawings, one for each
movement, back-projected
behind the
players.Digital copies of
these drawings may be
obtained from Schott

Quatuor No
2 was first performed by
the Tana string quartet
on April 14, 2013, at
Radio France, Paris. I
conceived a piece whose
principal subject was
going to consist in the
description of a
minuscule sonic element.
The description of this
tiny initial material
would be so precise, so
detailed that, deployed
on a much larger scale
than its original one, it
would occupy the entire
duration of the piece. At
that point, I just had to
choose a sound model as
the starting point of the
piece, the sound that
would best characterize
the string instruments
themselves: the noisy
sound produced by the bow
barely coming in contact
with one of the strings,
getting ready to acquire
speed, weight,
acceleration, and
producing a full sound of
a violin, a viola or a
cello... -Daniel
D'Adamo.

Pavel
Haas was one of Leoš
Janácek’s most
gifted students. His
String Quartet No. 2
“From the Monkey
Mountains†is
considered to be one of
the first high points of
his oeuvre.
In
this work, Haas combined
elements of
Janácek’s
compositional technique
with jazz, particularly
in the fourth
movement’s
instrumentation for
string quartet and
percussion ad libitum.
This version was
premiered in Brno in
1926; later, the work was
revised for string
quartet only. For this
edition Ondrej Pivoda has
reconstructed the
original version,
bringing to light
passages that were never
published until
now.
This is the
first critical edition of
the work. It is based on
all relevant sources,
taking sketches of the
final version of the
score and contemporary
performance material into
account. It includes an
extensive Foreword
(Cz/Eng/Ger) as well as a
Critical Commentary
(Eng).

Although
this is technically
Cowie's seventh string
quartet, it replaces his
earlier fourth quartet,
which he came to feel no
longer fit with his
compositional voice. The
quartet fluctuates
between a slow, luminous
sound and fast, agitated
music. Unlike much of
Cowie's work, this music
is abstracted from his
usual preoccupation with
the natural world,
turning instead to look
at an inner landscape.
The composer describes
the emotional force
behind his quartet: The
year 2009 was a terrible
year in which I lost
three close friends to
cancer and an elder
brother to Alzheimer's
disease. It was also a
year in which my wife was
diagnosed with breast
cancer; something from
which she has thankfully
made a great recovery. At
times like these,
emotions are sorely
tested and highlighted.
Four people I loved have
gone, so this music must
remain as testament not
to death, but to the
magnificent fragility and
loveliness of life. It
closes with a gentle and
almost vaporising
'benediction' a kind of
'amen' if you like.

This
four-movement work
represents the composer's
desire 'to write a piece
of real chamber music,
intimate and
conversational in tone,
drawing the listener into
its worlds'. The result,
he writes, 'is a rather
inward-looking,
reflective work, not
without a capricious
aspect, but only
occasionally raising its
voice.'.

Linien,
Zeichnungen ist eine
neuere Komposition uber
eine altere Komposition
von mir, und zwischen
beiden liegt ein
zeitlicher Abstand von
dreizehn Jahren - eine
Kluft, die ich nicht
uberwinden, sondern
fruchtbar machen wollte.
Die Ausgangskomposition,
11 Linien fur
Streichquartett, widmet
sich der Gestaltung
linearer Prozesse in
ausserster Reduktion. In
elf Abschnitten, die
jeweils siebenundsiebzig
Sekunden dauern,
durchziehen annahernd
einstimmige, gelegentlich
gespaltene, Klanglinien
die im Quadrat
positionierten
Instrumente. Wie Umrisse
einer Landschaft am
Horizont, bleiben diese
linearen Klangzeichnungen
in der ersten Version
schemenhaft.Ursprunglich
wollte ich dieses Stuck
nach vielen Jahren
lediglich abschreiben,
doch dieser Vorgang
verselbstandigte sich und
entwickelte ein
Eigenleben, der
schliesslich in eine neue
Komposition mundete. So
begann es mich zu
interessieren, jene
abstrakten Landschaften
nun aus der Nahe zu
betrachten und die
ursprunglichen Linien wie
mit einem Zoomobjektiv in
die Nahe zu holen und aus
verschiedenen
Perspektiven zu
betrachten. Auf dieses
Weise haben sich
differenzierte Konturen
dort entwickelt, wo in
der ersten Version nur
grobe Umrisse zu erkennen
waren, wie zum Beispiel
ein linear fallendes
Glissando oder eine
statische Skala. Die
Ferne und Nahe zu den
einstigen
Klangkonfigurationen und
die Entdeckung ihres
moglichen Innenlebens ist
auf diese Weise zu einem
zentralen Thema der
zweiten Version geworden.
So sind aus den 11 Linien
schliesslich sieben neue
Kompositionen geworden,
gepragt von dem
Ineinandergreifen von
abstrakten Linien und
polyphon aufgefacherten
Zeichnungen. Auf
artifizielle Weise stehen
sie nun in einer
Beziehung zueinander wie
eine eingefrorene
Photographie im
Verhaltnis zu einem
gelebten
Augenblick.(Isabel
Mundry,
2010)
