Pulcinella

the Italian commedia

opens with a long and
expressive minor melody
for the soloist over a
brooding accompaniment.
This is taken up briefly
by the full band and is
extended by the soloist
after a change of key. A
cadenza, accompanied by
fragments of the main
melody leads to a
complete change of mood,
tempo and tonality,
introducing a Vivo
section starting with a
perky syncopated tune for
the soloist. The band
then uses elements of
this new tune to
introduce a change of
key, where the soloist
introduces a more lyrical
second subject over a
pulsing accompaniment.
The band then takes this
up and changes key to
reintroduce the original
Vivo melody, which
leads to a short and
acrobatic coda to bring
the work to a spectacular

This opening
piece was commissioned by
a youth orchestra, which
explains why it has such
a lot of dynamism, energy
and optimism. However, it
begins in a stately and
noble fashion, in the
lower range of the wind
orchestra. Soon the
rhythmical drive takes
over, imbuing this piece
with a vibrant and
energetic character. Some
lovely melodic lines and
themes are also
integrated within this
fast section. Wind music
in Croatia is developing
apace as more and more
ensembles are excited by
the next generation of
composers finding so much
success worldwide. For
this reason, the
Vatroslav Lisinski Music
School commissioned this
short but effective piece
from Jan Van der Roost.
The premièretook place
in Zagreb on April 24
2013, conducted by Mario
Komazin.
Dit
openingswerk is
geschreven in opdracht
van een jeugdorkest, wat
verklaart waarom het
zoveel dynamiek, energie
en optimisme ademt. Het
begint echter op
plechtige en statige
wijze - in het lage
blazersregister. Al snel
krijgt de muziek een
steeds ritmischer
karakter en wordt ze
levendiger en vitaler van
sfeer. In dit snelle
gedeelte zijn ook
verschillende mooie
melodielijnen en
thema’s verwerkt.
Het genre blaasmuziek is
in Kroatië sterk in
opkomst, en meer en meer
ensembles zijn
enthousiast over de
volgende generatie jonge
musici die wereldwijd
zoveel succes hebben.
Tegen die achtergrond
heeft de Vatroslav
Lisinski Music School de
Belgische componist Jan
Van der Roost verzochtdit
korte maar effectvolle
werk te schrijven. De
première vond op 24
april 2013 plaats in
Zagreb, onder leiding van

From
Robert Orledge's
notes:
My interest
in the wonderful music of
Claude Debussy began in
the 1980s when I
researched and published
a book with Cambridge
University Press entitled
Debussy and the Theatre.
During the course of my
studies in Paris, I was
amazed to discover that
Debussy planned over 50
theatrical works but only
finished two of these
entirely by himself (the
opera Pelleas et
Melisande in 1893-1902
and the ballet Jeux for
Diaghilev's Ballets
Russes in 1912-13). Of
the rest, many were never
started musically (like
Siddartha and Orphee-roi
with the Oriental scholar
Victor Segalen, 1907);
some had a few
tantalising sketches
(like the Edgar Allan Poe
opera Le Diable dans le
beffroi, 1902-03); some
were half-finished (like
his other Poe opera La
Chute de la Maison Usher,
1908-17); while others
were musically complete
but had their
orchestrations completed
by other composers (like
Khamma, by Charles
Koechlin, 1912-13; or Le
Martyre de Saint
Sebastien and La Boite a
joujoux by his 'angel of
corrections' ['l'ange des
Corrections'] Andre
Caplet in 1911 and 1919
respectively).
For
it has to be admitted
that what some scholars
call Debussy's
'compulsive achievement'
could equally well be
viewed as laziness,
especially as far as the
minute detail required
for calligraphing his
orchestral scores was
concerned. It was as if
creating the music itself
was of greater importance
than controlling its
final sound, even if
Debussy was an
imaginative orchestrator
when he found the time
and energy to do it. It
also seems true that
Debussy also preferred
inventing ideas to
turning them into
complete pieces. However,
despite the lack of
detail in many of his
sketches (missing clefs,
key signatures, dynamics,
phrasing, etc.) the notes
themselves are
surprisingly accurate,
whether or not they can
be compared with a later
draft. Thus, a large
number of sketches exist
for his Chinese ballet
No-ja-li ou Le Palais du
Silence and it is not too
difficult to see which
parts of Georges de
Feure's 1913 scenario
(see below) inspired
which ideas. But Debussy
hardly made any attempt
to join them together
after the first few
bars.
It was
usually up to his
publisher, Jacques
Durand, to find solutions
when Debussy risked a
breach of contract.
Debussy was supposed to
supervise the
orchestrations completed
by others, but this
supervision was usually
very light and restricted
to quiet, sensitive
moments in which problems
were easier to spot. Far
from jealously guarding
every one of his created
notes, as Ravel did,
Debussy once even went as
far as to ask Koechlin to
'write a ballet for him
that he would sign' on 26
March 1914 when he was
hard-pressed to fulfil
his lucrative contract
for No-ja-li with Andre
Charlot at the Alhambra
Theatre in London. In the
end, Debussy (through
Durand) sent Charlot the
symphonic suite Printemps
instead, whose
orchestration had been
completed by Henri Busser
in the Spring of
1912.
So, when I
was offered early
retirement as Professor
of Music at Liverpool
University in 2004, I
seized the opportunity it
would give me to spend
time trying to
reconstruct some of
Debussy's lost potential
masterpieces from his
existing sketches and
drafts--then
orchestrating them in
Debussy's style when this
was appropriate. I had
begun this mission in
2001 with the most
promising project, the
missing parts of Scene 2
of La Chute de la Maison
Usher and the sheer joy
it gave me at every stage
persuaded me to tackle
other projects,
especially when Debussy
experts were unable to
identify exactly where I
took over from Debussy
(and vice versa) in
Usher.

Ports
of Call, a suite of five
movements for two violins
and guitar was written
for the Trio Triento for
their New York debut.
Composed in the Summer of
1992, it was premiered in
April 1993. 1992 was the
500th anniversary of the
1492 expulsion of the
Jews from Spain and, of
course, Columbus' trip to
America. To commemorate
these important events, I
was commissioned by
organizations in 20 major
cities to write an
oratorio. The result was
Ever Since Babylon. The
musical material was
greatly influenced by
tunes from around the
Mediterranean region.
These Sephardic melodies
took on treat meaning for
me, and I took five of
them and expanded them
into these five pieces
which are actually
dances. I felt that the
combination of two
violins and guitar lent
itself well as a vehicle
for this music. The names
of the cities are used
because the tunes
originated in these
particular locations.
Marseille, a typical
provencale dance with
naturally changing meters
and a light, airy, touch.
Alexandria, much more
mysterious and languid,
reflecting the heat and
inertia of that glorious
city in slow though
sometimes steady
movement. Salonika, a
wild dance in typical
Greek fashion celebrating
a holiday with abandon.
The whirling movement
goes relentlessly from
beginning to end. Haifa
is represented by two
beautiful chant-like
pastoral tunes which
introduce the beauty and
luminous quality of this,
one of the most beautiful
parts in the Eastern
Mediterranean. Valencia,
the last, a tribute to
medieval Spain. The music
is a culmination of the
influences of the three
great cultures, Moslem,
Christian, and Jewish,
which flourished there
for hundreds of years. It
is an uplifting dance
with just a tinge of
sadness in the center,
since the Golden Age of
which the tune was a
part, had come to a
tragic end in 1492.

the work has long been a

The work is a real rarity

Resolute was
composed to celebrate the
enduring spirit of those
who persevere and
overcome difficult
challenges with fearless
determination. Set in G
major, this triumphant
theme features a strong,
accented melody and
energetic accompaniments
that frequently utilize
double-stops for a
resounding effect. The
shadows of hardship are
heard in a brief shift to
E minor before the
victorious melody returns
with joy that defies
darkness with courageous
hope. The same way we
support each other
through trials, many
melodies and
countermelodies are
doubled between sections
to portray strength and
resolve.Resolute was
premiered by the East
River High School
Orchestra in May of 2022
under the direction of
Mr. Scott Friedberg in
honor of the
orchestra’s 4-year
anniversary, and
dedicated to the
courageous students who
continued to make music
through the pandemic,
demonstrating
determination and
tenacity in their
passionate pursuit of
musical excellence.
