Arranged
for SATB choir, two
keyboards, strings, and
optional harp, with
soprano, tenor (optional)
and baritone soloists,
this fresh and unorthodox
interpretation reflects
on the words of the Latin
Mass by juxtaposing them
with poems in English.
For soprano solo and SATB
choir, this movement
begins with the choir on
the English text by
Phineas Fletcher (1633).
A 32-measure soprano solo
follows, which covers the
majority of the English
text. The soloist then
begins the
ââ¬ÅRecordare,
¢â¬Â a calm,
descending melodic line
with the choir singing
the opening
ââ¬ÅDrop,
dropââ¬Â motif
as accompaniment. The
choir then concludes with
the slow, descending
lines ââ¬ÅJesu
pie, Jesu
pie.ââ¬Â

Popular

Sleeth's popular choral
anthem and hymn, also
known as In the Bulb
There Is a Flower, has
been given a lovely new
treatment by Tom Fettke
for SATB choirs. The
provocative text relates
both to our present life
and our hope of eternal
life, as expressed in I
Corinthians 15:35-58.
This fresh setting
emphasizes the
resurrected life as it
builds to the final
victory stanza with
driving rhythm and a
change to common meter
(4/4). This arrangement
is also available in a
medium-voice vocal solo
in the key of F.

by Camp Kirkland contains
a Conductor's Score and

African American
Spiritual.
In 1961,
a diverse group of
student activists
organized a movement
called Freedom Riders to
challenge racial
segregation in Southern
states. Their strategy
was to ride busses into
cities with segregation
laws and deliberately
break them. For instance,
white students would use
colored only restrooms,
while black students
would sit at white only
food counters. The hope
was that, when confronted
by police, the federal
government would be
forced to step in and
defend the students'
constitutional rights. On
many occasions, these
demonstrations were met
with violent behavior
from locals, including
beatings and a
firebombing. Ultimately,
these Freedom Riders
helped lead to the
abolishment of
segregation by bringing
national attention to the
injustices of
segregation. While
touring, the Freedom
Riders would collectively
perform songs with
messages about freedom
and justice. One
participant, African
-American preacher Rev.
Robert Wesby, reimagined
the lyrics of the hymn
Woke Up this Mornin' by
replacing the name Jesus
with freedom in each
refrain. This version of
the hymn went on to
become a powerful symbol
of the American civil
rights movement. In
