Johann
Michael Haydn's Requiem
in C minor heavily
influenced W. A. Mozart's
Requiem. In just two
weeks Michael Haydn
composed his work in
December 1771, on the
occasion of the death of
his employer, Prince
Bishop Sigismund Count
Schrattenbach, who was
beloved among the people
and was a great patron of
the arts. The work was
written under the
impression of personal
tragedy: Haydn's only
child, Aloisia Josepha,
died in January 1771,
before completing her
first year of life. Parts
of the
Schrattenbach-Requiem
were played together with
the completed movements
from his second,
unfinished Requiem during
his own furneral service.
During the funeral
service in Vienna for
Joseph Haydn, parts of
his younger brother's
C-minor Requiem were also
performed. Score

Haydn wrote
the Missa Sancti Nicolai
in 1772, probably for the
name day of prince
Nicolaus Esterhazy. This
work is on a larger scale
than the other missae
breves, and in the
orchestra two oboes and
two horns join the
strings. At the very
beginning of the Kyrie
the gentle, pastoral
character which
distinguishes this work
is established. Haydn
reprises the music of the
Kyrie in the Dona nobis
pacem to round off the
work. The full score
contains at the same time
the organ part. This work
is now available in carus
music, the choir app!

Haydn's
Missa Sancti Joannis
Nepomuceni, dated 21 May
1772, is dedicated to the
Bohemian martyr and
patron Saint of bridges,
Johannes Nepomuk (ca.
1340-1393, canonized in
1729). Despite the
addition of woodwinds and
brass to the three-part
string section, the Mass
is in a comparatively
simple, compact form as
was expressly required by
Count Hieronymus
Colloredo, Haydn's second
employer in Salzburg.
Even in the final
sections of the Gloria
and Credo Haydn forgoes
not only vocal
virtuosity, but also the
polyphonic artifices
which traditionally
characterize these
passages in the Mass.
Like the Missa Sancti
Amandi (1776), the
Nepomuk Mass does not
employ vocal soloists.

Despite all
of its folk-line
simplicity of melody,
Haydn's first mass
contains a pious note
that, just like its
youthful verve, still was
to hold fascination for
him in his late years
when, in 1805, he
re-orchestrated his first
work. The first version
of the mass is considered
to have been composed in
1749 or 1750. It was
around the same time that
Pope Benedict XIV treated
questions concerning
church music in his
encyclical Annus qui in
which he condemned the
frequently operatic style
of church music and
demanded liturgical music
that revealed an
awareness of its
religious purpose and
that sought to fulfill it
with simple means of
musical expression. In
its liturgical attitude
Haydn's first mass is
anchorded in this point
of view (that to a great
extent corresponded to
the general standpoint of
the churches of the
eighteenth century).

Haydn's
Missa in Angustiis, also
known as theNelson Mass,
was composed in 1798. It
is one of the six great
Mass settings that forms
the crowning glory of his
vocal music along with
The Creation and The
Seasons.
Continuing the
collaboration between
Barenreiter and the G.
Henle publishing company
regarding Haydn's
large-scale choral works,
operas and symphonies,
this edition is based on

Joseph
Haydn's Stabat Mater,
written in 1767, was the
first church work the
composer wrote after
entering the service of
Prince Esterhazy in
Eisenstadt. Unlike almost
all his other sacred
works, it soon circulated
in numerous copies and
established Haydn's
reputation as the leading
vocal composer of his
day. This edition is
based on three original
copies of parts, which
are regarded as being
particularly close to the
(missing) autograph
manuscript because of the
date they were made and
the reliable transmission
of the music text. As so,
this great, moving
setting of the Stabat
Mater is now newly
available in a modern,
scholarly edition. The
complete performance
material is available on

Johann
Michael Haydn's masses
are masterpieces of their
genre. Carus is
publishing these
important works in Urtext
editions. Of the thirty
masses, almost two thirds
contain a saint's name as
part of their title. The
names relate to the
dedications of
monasteries or parish
churches, name days,
ordinations or
consecrations, diocesan
patron saints, or
anniversaries. Three
masses with the names of
Archangels survive
(Michael, Gabriel, and
Raphael), all early
compositions by Haydn in
the concise Missa Brevis
form. He probably
composed the
Michaelsmesse MH 12 in
Vienna before 1758. This
mass belongs to the
festive type brevis et
solemnis because of its
scoring with two
trumpets.

Joseph Haydn
made two settings of the
Ambrosian song of praise
the Te Deum. The second
of these is a work of
Haydn's last period and
was written around 1800
for the Empress Marie
Therese. Its large
orchestra gives this
work, which makes no use
of solo singers, a
particular splendour of
sound akin to that of the
choruses in Haydn's
Creation. Score and part
available separately -

Michael
Haydn composed three of
his masses in honor of
the holy archangels - St
Michael, St Gabriel, and
the Raphaelismesse in
honor of St Raphael now
published. By avoiding
the use of vocal
soloists, it is one of
the genre of Missa in
pieno. Four trumpets and
two ad lib oboe parts
added later by the
composer give the work a
festive sound in the
baroque tradition. At the
same time, elements of
the 'sensitive style'
feature too. The Gloria
and Credo exist in two
settings, a short version
with polytextual passages
and a longer version
arranged by Haydn
himself. The Carus
edition, based on
authentic performance
material in St. Peter's
Monastery in Salzburg,
contains both versions,
with the longer version
published here for the
first time. Score and
part available separately

The Mass
Rorate coeli desuper may
be one of Joseph Haydn's
earliest works, but its
attribution to Haydn is
disputed. This short mass
setting is based on the
complete ordinary of the
mass. Because of this it
is suitable both for the
so-called Rorate masses
(which lack the Credo) as
well as for Sunday masses
during Advent (which lack
the Gloria). The full
score contains at the
same time the organ part.
