The
Jagdquartett (Hunt
Quartet), which Jorg
Widmann wrote as his
third string quartet in
2003, following the
Choralquartett, also
begins with a visible
gesture. After a short
signal cry from the
performers, the piece
starts by quoting Robert
Schumann's Papillons op.
2, and for its full
duration retains this
gesture, these starting
sounds. The degrees of
recognizability do change
continuously, to be sure,
in the furious, racing
organism of the score.
The contours change into
forms on another level,
yet now and then the
begining material returns
clearly to the fore,
initiated anew by a cry
from the performers, and
is then digested or
mutated as a rhythmic
study into a field of
harmonic experimentation.
On rare occasions, there
are moments of pause - as
though the musicians were
testing the atmosphere,
as though they were
sensing the weather, so
as ultimately to continue
playing the quartet
across the fields an
forests of notes. A hunt
after joyful performance,
a chase, the whip
cracking, after the thing
to be shot, the sound,
its performer, perhaps
the composer himself? - A
last shout, morendo, dal
niente... - The victim is
not the audience, at any
rate.When comparing the
output of string quartets
from the 18th century to
thetime of Schumann, it
appears to have dropped
considerably. Schumann
composed only three
complete quartets, all of
them in the so-called
'chamber music year'
1842. Jorg Widmann, who
counts Robert Schumann
among his greatest
inspirations, finished a
series of five string
quartets in 2005, at the
same age as Schumann. The
quartets in the cycle
form in themselves the
characters of the
movements of the
classical quartet.
Jagdquartett represents
the fast middle movement,
the scherzo. Widmann's
work appears rough and
wild in the style of
Schumann's alter ego
Florestan. His hunt
begins in the tempo of
'allegro vivace assai'
with the final theme of
Schumann's Papillons
which often appears or is
cited in many of
Schumann's compositions.
Widmann eventually
dismantles the thematic
material of his fierce
quartet, thus
skeletonising his
prey.

Matt
hew Whittall's preface to
Bright Ferment (2019): I
have a complicated
history with the string
quartet. Actually, it's
not that complicated. I
spent months writing a
huge one in my early
twenties and hastily
withdrew it after a long
delayed premiere, vowing
never to write another.
In a typical case of
karmic retribution, my
fear of the form would
eventually be overcome by
the unrefusable offer to
write the compulsory
piece for the Banff
International String
Quartet Competition in my
native Canada. The short
duration requested, about
nine minutes, also felt
like a good way to wade
gingerly back into the
medium. The title was
originally just a
nice-sounding pair of
words that surfaced in a
brainstorming session
with fellow composer Alex
Freeman over an
injudicious amount of
fermented barley. When I
looked it up later, I
found that it was a
phrase of older coinage,
seemingly used more for
poetic resonance than any
fixed meaning. Ferment by
itself denotes a state of
confusion, change or lack
of order. With bright, it
takes on a more positive
connotation with regard
to society and
creativity: a wild
profusion of ideas barely
checked by reason. (It
may not actually mean
that, but it describes
this piece nicely, so
let's go with it.)
Fermentation in its
trendy culinary usage is
also hinted at via a
recurrent percolating
device of scattered
pizzicati. As one may
guess from the tone of
this introduction, there
is little attempt at
gravity in Bright
Ferment, the only means
by which I felt I could
sidestep the historical
and expressive weight of
the string quartet genre.
Styles, gestures and
moods are tossed around,
cross-cut and abandoned
in
stream-of-consciousness
fashion, connected by
little except an
intuitive sense of
rightness in their
juxtaposition. If the
piece acquires depth in
spite of me, it will only
be because its disparate
parts amplify and
strengthen each other
simply by being together
- much like the ensemble
itself. Bright Ferment
was commissioned by the
Banff Centre for the Arts
and Creativity and the
Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation, with
additional funding from
the Americas Society (New
York), for the 2019 Banff
International String
Quartet Competition.

Aribert
Reimann's idea to arrange
the lieder of Franz Liszt
for baritone and string
quartet goes back to his
collaboration with
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau,
recording some of these
lieder for the German
broadcasting company
formerly known as Sender
Freies Berlin (SFB).
Since then, Reimann has
continued to be
fascinated by Liszt's
thrilling harmony and
unconventional treatment
of the voice. Here, he
has compiled a cycle
containing seven lieder
from Liszt's middle and
late periods, arranged so
that each song is the
logical continuation of
its predecessor. Liszt's
fundamental harmony has
been retained, but the
registers have been
altered to such an extent
that they appear in a
completely new light.

String Quartet
No. 1 is a powerful
and harmonically dynamic
string quartet in four
movements. It mixes both
tonal and dissonant
musical landscapes in an
elegant way. The quartet
may also be experienced
as a kind of
coming-of-age story.
After the calm first
movement’s
confident simplicity of
youth, the second
movement reflects the
increasing complications
and conflicts of young
adulthood, with fraught
exploration, the
discovery of possible
romance, and new tensions
now replacing the
youthful calm. The third
movement reflects on
maturity and the
experiences of love and
loss, before the
finale—a set of
complex chromatic
fugues—evokes the
fight against fate and
time to achieve
one’s goals in
life. The
movement’s end
briefly recapitulates the
first movement,
suggesting that
ultimately life comes
full circle as we see the
totality of our
experience. As LA Opus
music critic, John
Stodder, said about this
work, The protagonist
discovers the presence of
life's purpose. String

Richard
Reed Parry 's Quartet For
Heart And Breath is an
innovative and original
piece based on the
performers' own bodily
rhythms. This sheet music
is for String Quartet
(Violin/Violin/Viola/Cell
o). Richard Reed Parry is
familiarto millions as
the lead singer of rock
band Arcade Fire, yet his
foray into classical
music is equally worthy
of attention. Quartet For
Heart And Breath is an
experiment into using the
performers' heartbeats
and breathing to dictate
the tempo. The performers
are instructed to wear
stethoscopes in order to
listen to their
heartbeats closely, while
one complete breath
corresponds to one bar
and two heartbeats equal
two crotchets. The result
is a quiet and subtle
piece, as each instrument
has to play softly so as
to be able to keep in
time. The piece also has
a naturally occurring
dynamism in that the
players' heart rates
constantly change as the
performance goes on, with
each instrument falling
in and out of sync
sometimes culminating in
a beautiful moment of all
heartbeats matching each
other. Interestingly,
this unique aspect means
that no performance will
ever be the same, meaning
to hear or play this
composition will be a
truly once in a lifetime
experience. Quartet For
Heart And Breath is a
superbly one-of-a-kind
composition by Richard
Reed Parry . Commissioned
by the Kronos Quartet,
this piece makes for a
wonderfully distinctive
performance, with
fascinating implications
for the connection
between the music and the
body.
