French composer Michel Mériot (1928-2003) studied at the Conservatory of Poitiers before joining the band of the French Marines. He then studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won prizes for Saxophone proving himself as a highly competent player of the instrument. His compositions including Sicilienne Et Dance for Alto Saxophone and Piano have provded that he is also a highly capable composer. Written by Jacques Charpentier for Alto Saxophone and Piano Gavambodi 2 is a piece lasting 9 minutes dedicated to Georges Gourdet. Ideal for advanced players it features the Carnatic mode (n°43) and is a great work to play for a recital. We can distinguish three parts in this piece: a slow beginning starting with the Saxophone solo which quickly develops into a faster chromatic section which is much more technical. The Finale is reminiscent of the beginning ending with two very slow measures. Widely influenced by his travel especially India this music is also reminiscent of the techniques used by his teachers suchas Olivier Messiaen. Jacques Charpentier (b. 1933) is a French musician who lived in India and wrote numerous pieces from Piano and Organ music to Chamber stage and orchestra works among others.

French composer Robert Planel (1908-1994) was the son of composer and founder of the Music School of Montelimar Alphonse Planel. Robert Planel was an exceptionally accomplished musician reflected in his composition Prelude and Saltarelle for Alto Saxophone and Piano. It is hard to fathom why Prelude and Saltarello has somewhat disappeared from the repertoire. With a typical performance lasting about seven minutes Planel's pieces is made up of two movements. The Prelude begins calm and while tonality is exploited and significantly complex flourishes are heard therelationship between the Saxophone and Piano remains exquisite. The movement then climaxes into the 6/8 Saltarello. Planel's Prelude and Saltarello is an exciting addition to the modern repertoire of the Saxophone and cannot be missed by aspiring saxophonists.
