With a total
duration of about 30
minutes, Schubert's Mass
in B flat major (D 324),
written in 1815, is
considerably longer than
Mozart's and Haydn's
classical Brevis masses,
and its large
instrumental ensemble
with strings, woodwinds,
brass and timpani even
gives it a clearly solemn
character. Overall,
Schubert was inspired by
the late Haydn style of
the symphonic mass (e.g.,
the division into six
large movements, the
omission of arias for the
vocal soloists who are
instead juxtaposed with
the choir, singing short
passages either singly or
as a group) without, of
course, achieving its
temporal expansion. This
is a representative,
musically appealing work
that excels with its
multi-layered, detailed
text treatment. It is,
therefore, suitable for
special occasions and the
high feasts of the church
year and can be mastered
well by experienced
church choirs. Score
available separately -
see item CA.4065700.

The first
edition of a Missa in F
by Giovanni Platti (ca.
1690-1763) is a rarity.
Platti served at the
Court of the Counts of
Schonborn-Wiesentheid,
and during his more than
40 years of service at
the Court he worked for
more than five masters
and each of them knew how
to make use of his
musical abilities. Thus,
in addition to his
position as a virtuoso
oboist, singer and
violinist, he was also
entrusted with the
musical education of
musicians. The Missa in F
major is primarily a
composition for choir; it
is very singable, its
construction is
transparent and it is
accompanied by only four
strings and an organ.

Offertory for the

Composed by Johann Ernst
Eberlin. Edited by Armin

Horn. Sacred music from

vocal music, Easter and
Eastertide. Choral Score.
Duration 4 minutes. Carus

Eberlin's
programmatic setting of
the offertory Terra
tremuit was written for
the festive liturgy of
Easter Sunday at Salzburg
Cathedral, which in the
17th and 18th centuries
was a center of the
cultivation of the
polyphonic offertory.
Verses 9 and 10 of Psalm
76 (Vulgata 75), with
their vivid description
of the earth trembling
and falling silent are
Eberlin's basis for the
offertory. Eberlin
depicts the earthquake by
means of a written-out
tremolo of the strings,
and by staccato singing
of the syllables of the
word tremuit. The
Resurrection is depicted
musically by ascending
figures at the words dum
resurgere. An Alleluia
concludes the work. Score
available separately -
see item CA.2711000.

Marc-Antoine
Charpentier's Magnificat
H 78 was composed around
1690 for the Jesuits in
Paris. No less than ten
works by the composer, in
differing vocal and
instrumental scoring and
form comprise this genre.
In the present Magnificat
H 78 for five voices (in
which alto and bass also
have solo roles), two
flutes, strings and basso
continuo, each of the
individual movements
contains its own
expressive profile in
sound. Score available

The
cantata Ich ruf zu dir,
Herr Jesu Christ begins
with an expansive chorale
arrangement, for which
Bach reverted to a proven
model: The four voices of
the solo ensemble take
over the chorale, in
which the melody lies in
the soprano. For stanzas
2-4 Bach chooses the aria
form with a highly
differentiated scoring
from movement to
movement, ranging from a
continuo Aria (1st
movement), up to an aria
accompanied by the
violin, with obbligato
bassoon and continuo. A
straightforward four-part
chorale movement
concludes the cantata.
