It is not
only the great success of
Nathan Evans' re-release
of The Wellerman on
social media that is
responsible for the great
popularity of sea
shanties and naval songs.
Such songs create a
unique mood, a touch of
adventure and wanderlust
for the big, wide world.
Hardly anyone can elude
it and with Vahid
Matejko's Sea Shanty
Play-Alongs there are now
the most beautiful sea
shanties and naval songs
skillfully arranged as an
instrumental play-along
series for recorder,
flute, clarinet,
saxophone, trumpet (opt.

(opt. baritone B.C.),
violin, and accordion
(piano). The varied
arrangements have a wide
stylistic range and offer
echoes from rock, Latin,
funk, big band to
orchestral and Caribbean
influences. Thus, each
song has its own musical
and instrumental appeal,
to which the parts and/or
solos specially composed
by arranger Vahid Matejko
also contribute. The
original polyphonic
choral vocals are
replaced by polyphonic
instrumental
backings. Each of the
ten titles was recorded

A unique
collection of elegant
transcriptions of
Bach’s keyboard
and instrumental gems
scored for 10 woodwinds,
with flexible scoring and
ossia parts –
ideal for schools and
“pull-outâ€
groups on wind ensemble
concerts. The music of
Johann Sebastian Bach
(1685-1750) is a gift.
Nearly every piece that
poured out of this man is
as inspired and perfected
as the next. His body of
work has cut a deep
incision in the recorded
history of music and set
a benchmark to which all
the contrapuntal masters
who followed have aspired
to meet.The
transcriptions found
within this volume add to
the thousands upon
thousands of versions of
his music already
re-worked for different
groups and media. The
music here does not,
however, embellish
Bach’s own scores
(save but for a couple of
instances in which it was
felt necessary to add an
inner voice to serve the
expansive range of the
ten woodwinds). The
selections are ordered
(loosely) to assume a
smooth, inclined
trajectory of both
difficulty and musical
breadth. The first piece
is a small and
simpleminuet, the last is
a long interior movement
of one of the most
beloved and advanced
violin concertos in the
whole repertoire.As a
keyboard player I grew up
learning and falling in
love with much of
Bach’s music at
the piano. For this very
reason, much of this
volume consists of the
composer’s
keyboard works. One
cannot, however, deny
many of the most
cherished works from
Bach’s oeuvre when
compiling a set of
transcriptions, and many
of those
“hits†are
included here as
well.Departing from a
traditional harmoniemusik
ensemble, I have replaced
the horns here with
saxophones. There are two
reasons: 1) the nature of
much of this music
requires instruments with
an ease of agility not
executable so readily on
the horn; and 2) the
opportunity for saxophone
players to be included in
such an ensemble was very
attractive,
pedagogically.I hope you
enjoy these gems from
such a great genius.

This piece was
commissioned by the
‘Concert Band
Vlamertinge’ and
is a plea for peace: the
title translates as
‘Peace on
Earth’. This is
expressed by means of the
vocal contribution
expected from the
performers. In various
places of the piece you
can recognize, the words
‘Et In Terra
Pax’ - an appeal
for peace - at first
jumbled together but
later more rhythmically
structured, developing
into synchronized massed
voices.The work starts
with a pentatonic theme
based on the notes D, E,
G, A and C (taken from
‘ConCErtbAnD
VlAmErtinGE’ and
the name of the
conductor, NiCk
VAnDEnDriessChe). A
somewhat sad melody is
developed during an
orchestral climax which
leads to the
firstexplosion of sound
(measure 62 onwards).
Suddenly the opening
measures are recaptured,
albeit with a differently
colored sound: the words
‘Et In Terra
Pax’ bring the
first movement to a
close. A restless Allegro
follows which abruptly
stops and is replaced by
a calming cho-rale-like
passage. A narrator reads
aloud the poem
‘Sonnet’ by
the young poet Charles
Hamilton Sorley, who was
killed during World War
I. This poem fittingly
puts into words the
cruelty and senselessness
of war. After the
expanded recapitulation
of the allegro, the
broad, almost infinite
atmosphere of the
beginning returns.
Clarinet and English horn
play the pentatonic
opening theme once more,
this time broadly, while
the words ‘Et In
Terra... Pax’ are
repeated again and again
by the rest of the
orchestra.The composer
has purposely avoided all
forms of aggression and
bombastic sounds
regularly used in works
about war. Fear of
violence and destruction
can be heard and felt
during the allegro
passages. The charged
opening makes way in the
end for hope: May
peacefulness replace
cruelty in everyday life,
too.
Dieses Werk
wurde im Auftrag der
Concert Band Vlamertinge
geschrieben und ist ein
Plädoyer an den
Frieden: Der Titel
bedeutet dann auch
‘Frieden auf
Erden’. Dies kommt
unter anderem im vokalen
Anteil der
Ausführenden zum
Ausdruck. An
verschiedenenStellen des
Werkes erklingen, anfangs
durcheinander dann zu
einem rhythmischen und
strukturierten
Synchrongesang vereint,
die Worte ‘Et In
Terra Pax’ wie ein
flehendes Gebet für
den Frieden.
Ein
pentatonisches Thema
formt den Anfang dieses
Werkes, basierend auf den
Noten D, E, G, A, und C,
die dem Namen:
‘ConCErtbAnD
VlAmErtingE’ und
dem Namen des Dirigenten
NiCk VAnDEnDriessChe
entstammen. Während
der orchestralen Klimax,
die zu einemersten
Klangausbruch führt
(ab Takt 62), entsteht
eine etwas traurige
Melodie. Plötzlich
werden dann die
Eingangstakte
wiederaufgenommen, wenn
auch mit einer
veränderten
Klangfarbe; die Worte
‘Et In Terra
Pax’ runden den
ersten Teil daraufhin ab.
Esfolgt ein unruhiges
Allegro, das
überraschend durch
eine Choralartigen
Passage voller Ruhe
unterbrochen wird. Eine
Sprechstimme liest
währenddessen das
Gedicht Sonnet des
jungen Dichters Charles
Hamilton Sorley vor, der
im ersten Weltkriegfiel.
Es findet für die
Grausamkeit und
Sinnlosigkeit des Krieges
die passenden Worte.
Nachdem das Allegro,
diesmal mit einigen
Ausbreitungen, wiederholt
wird, kehrt die weite,
beinahe unendliche
Atmosphäre des Beginns
wieder zurück.
Klarinettenspielen
zusammen mit einem
Englischhorn das
pentatonische
Eingangsthema ein letztes
Mal in ausgebreiteter
Fassung, wobei das
“Et In Terra
Pax’ durch den
Rest des Orchesters stets
wiederholt wird.Der
Komponist hat bewusst auf
jegliche Form der
Aggression oder
bombastischen Vertonung,
die in so vielen Werken
über den Krieg zu
finden ist, vermieden.
Dennoch ist die Angst vor
Gewalt und Zerstörung
vor allem in den
Allegro-Passagen deutlich
zuhören und zu
fühlen. Am Ende macht
die anfängliche
Spannung jedoch der
Hoffnung Platz: Möge
die Friedlichkeit auch im
täglichen Leben die
Grausamkeit
verbannen….

Christoph
Willibald Gluck’s
most popular opera
“Orphe et
Euridice†was
performed in 1774 in
Paris to sensational
success. This new
adaption followed the
original Viennese version
with Italian text that
was first performed in
1762 under the direction
of the composer in the
Burgtheater. For the
Paris version Gluck
changed the leading part
Orpheus from an alto to a
tenor role and composed
new recitatives.
Both versions of
Gluck’s reform
drama are based on a
libretto by Ranieri
de’ Calzabigi and
revolutionised
metastasian opera of the
18th century. Solo and
choral music,
instrumental music,
pantomime and dance are
all closely connected;
the myth replaces a
historical plot
surrounded by intrigue;
where there would have
been a da-capo aria there
are now simple song forms

Carl
started years back with
the Compressor
Limiter...that big black
hand-made-in-Denmark
compressor that brought
studio comps to the pedal
board. The word got out
that it was just too big
for modern pedal boards,
so Carl redesigned that
pedal into a much smaller
format, preset (or fixed)
the Threshold and
Response leaving just two
knobs for Comp and Level.
The feedback we got was
overwhelming...players
were telling us the Comp
Limiter had the same
sonic clarity, the same
headroom and the same
quietness that the big
studio comps had but was
so quick and easy to use.
Carl could have left it
there, but that's not
Carl! Welcome to the
Honey Comp, and it's as
sweet as ... well, you
know ... honey. This
pedal is the same as the
Comp Limiter in every
way... same Gray anodized
finish, same footprint
and the same simplicity
of use with one
compression control and
one level control. It is
pretty much the perfect
compressor, so what could
Carl possible upgrade?
Easy! Carl added a Dry
volume which allows you
parallel processing with
three knobs! Parallel
Processing is a studio
technique which takes a
heavily compressed signal
(which through
compression loses some
dynamics if not all) and
allows you to add a clean
(Dry) signal on top
replacing those dynamics
giving your guitar
three-dimensionality and
allowing the guitar to
cut through the mix. For
those of you used to
studio work, this is a
very well-known
technique, but usually
too complex for a pedal
board! The three knobs
allow you to balance the
Compressed signal with
the Dry signal quickly
and efficiently for a
very pro sound! The Carl
Martin Honey Comp
incorporates the special
CM developed DC/DC
converter circuitry. This
enables us to run the
pedal with +-12V
internally, which is
necessary, in order to
maintain the same sonic
quality and headroom as
on the “oldâ€
Compressor/Limiter, using
a regular 9V DC 200mA
external power
supply.

In the
jazz tradition the Tuba
was the bass in the
rhythm section up until
the mid-twenties. It was
then the upright bass
replaced the Tuba in many
ensembles as the jazz
music moved north and
continued to develop.
After this period the
Tuba's roll, as bass in
the rhythm section, was
at a standstill and did
not develop through Swing
and Bebop. It wasn't
until Cool Jazz of the
1950's when the Tuba was
used by Miles Davis and
Gil Evans in 'Birth of
the Cool' as an ensemble
horn. The Tuba, like
swimming, is something
you can't do any longer
than you can hold your
breath. In order to
maintain a steady beat
while playing in the
rhythm section I have
developed a system of
breathing called Pant
Breathing. Using this
method, the player can
maintain a steady beat
within the rhythm
section, without losing
time while taking deep
breaths.

This piece
was commissioned by the
'Concert Band
Vlamertinge' and is a
plea for peace: the title
translates as 'Peace on
Earth'. This is expressed
by means of the vocal
contribution expected
from the performers. In
various places of the
piece you can recognize,
the words 'Et In Terra
Pax' - an appeal for
peace - at first jumbled
together but later more
rhythmically structured,
developing into
synchronized massed
voices.The work starts
with a pentatonic theme
based on the notes D, E,
G, A and C (taken from
'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtinGE'
and the name of the
conductor, NiCk
VAnDEnDriessChe). A
somewhat sad melody is
developed during an
orchestral climax which
leads to the
firstexplosion of sound
(measure 62 onwards).
Suddenly the opening
measures are recaptured,
albeit with a differently
colored sound: the words
'Et In Terra Pax' bring
the first movement to a
close. A restless Allegro
follows which abruptly
stops and is replaced by
a calming cho-rale-like
passage. A narrator reads
aloud the poem 'Sonnet'
by the young poet Charles
Hamilton Sorley, who was
killed during World War
I. This poem fittingly
puts into words the
cruelty and senselessness
of war. After the
expanded recapitulation
of the allegro, the
broad, almost infinite
atmosphere of the
beginning returns.
Clarinet and English horn
play the pentatonic
opening theme once more,
this time broadly, while
the words 'Et In Terra...
Pax' are repeated again
and again by the rest of
the orchestra.The
composer has purposely
avoided all forms of
aggression and bombastic
sounds regularly used in
works about war. Fear of
violence and destruction
can be heard and felt
during the allegro
passages. The charged
opening makes way in the
end for hope: May
peacefulness replace
cruelty in everyday life,
too.
Dieses Werk
wurde im Auftrag der
Concert Band Vlamertinge
geschrieben und ist ein
Pladoyer an den Frieden:
Der Titel bedeutet dann
auch 'Frieden auf Erden'.
Dies kommt unter anderem
im vokalen Anteil der
Ausfuhrenden zum
Ausdruck. An
verschiedenenStellen des
Werkes erklingen, anfangs
durcheinander dann zu
einem rhythmischen und
strukturierten
Synchrongesang vereint,
die Worte 'Et In Terra
Pax' wie ein flehendes
Gebet fur den
Frieden.
Ein
pentatonisches Thema
formt den Anfang dieses
Werkes, basierend auf den
Noten D, E, G, A, und C,
die dem Namen:
'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtingE'
und dem Namen des
Dirigenten NiCk
VAnDEnDriessChe
entstammen. Wahrend der
orchestralen Klimax, die
zu einemersten
Klangausbruch fuhrt (ab
Takt 62), entsteht eine
etwas traurige Melodie.
Plotzlich werden dann die
Eingangstakte
wiederaufgenommen, wenn
auch mit einer
veranderten Klangfarbe;
die Worte 'Et In Terra
Pax' runden den ersten
Teil daraufhin ab.
Esfolgt ein unruhiges
Allegro, das uberraschend
durch eine Choralartigen
Passage voller Ruhe
unterbrochen wird. Eine
Sprechstimme liest
wahrenddessen das Gedicht
Sonnet des jungen
Dichters Charles Hamilton
Sorley vor, der im ersten
Weltkriegfiel. Es findet
fur die Grausamkeit und
Sinnlosigkeit des Krieges
die passenden Worte.
Nachdem das Allegro,
diesmal mit einigen
Ausbreitungen, wiederholt
wird, kehrt die weite,
beinahe unendliche
Atmosphare des Beginns
wieder zuruck.
Klarinettenspielen
zusammen mit einem
Englischhorn das
pentatonische
Eingangsthema ein letztes
Mal in ausgebreiteter
Fassung, wobei das Et In
Terra Pax' durch den Rest
des Orchesters stets
wiederholt wird.Der
Komponist hat bewusst auf
jegliche Form der
Aggression oder
bombastischen Vertonung,
die in so vielen Werken
uber den Krieg zu finden
ist, vermieden. Dennoch
ist die Angst vor Gewalt
und Zerstorung vor allem
in den Allegro-Passagen
deutlich zuhoren und zu
fuhlen. Am Ende macht die
anfangliche Spannung
jedoch der Hoffnung
Platz: Moge die
Friedlichkeit auch im
taglichen Leben die
Grausamkeit
verbannen...
