Utopia is de naam waaronder een in 1516 door de Engelse schrijver Thomas More gepubliceerd boek bekend is geworden. Utopia is een door More zelf naar het Grieks gemaakt woord dat Nergensland betekent en de woorden utopie en utopismeheeft doen ontstaan. Utopia schildert een ideale staat op een ver van de bewoonde wereld gelegen eiland. Dit idee vormde de inpiratiebron voor deze compositie. Qua variatie in thematiek en stijl doet het werk denken aan Oregon.Ook Utopia bestaat uit een combinatie van stijlen die de atmosfeer ademen van filmmuziek. Toch klinkt Utopia minder Amerikaans. Het langzame, meeslepende middendeel bijvoorbeeld komt dichter in de buurt van de Europese romantiek.de drieklanksignalen in het koper herinneren aan de muziek van Wagner.

As the title suggests, this work is a partita: it consists of a number of variations on a chorale melody. The partita has been popular for centuries, especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum, who is active in the choir world, chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer König as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare, the second variation follows, based on a canon by Pachelbel. Händel’s Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting, after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. PartitaPiccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms.

Die Partita, seit Jahrhunderten ein fester und beliebter Bestandteil der Orgelliteratur, besteht aus einer Anzahl Variationen zu einer Choralmelodie. Für seine Partita Piccola nahm sich Henk van Belcum die deutsche Hymne Wunderbarer König als Vorlage. Die Partita Piccola besteht aus vier Variationen und einer Choralbearbeitung, die auch einzeln für den Gottesdienst verwendet werden kann.Auf eine würdevolle Eröffnungsfanfare folgen neben der Choralbearbeitung Variationen zu einem Kanon Pachelbels und zu Händels Sarabande. Abgerundet wird das Werk schließlich durch eine festliche Courante. Die Partita Piccola ist eine Bereicherung für den Gottesdienst und dieKonzertbühne.

'Martenizza' is het Bulgaarse woord voor maart. Dit werk beschrijft een oud gebruik in Bulgarije, dat de componist via Ivo Stoykov, een Bulgaarse kennis, heeft leren kennen. volgens de tradietie geven goede vrienden elkaar op 1 maarteen aantal witte en rode wimpeltjes. Wanneer in maart voor het eerst een ooievaar is gezien, worden de wimpeltjes in een tak van een boom gehangen, waarbij men een wens mag uitspreken. Door middel van dit gebruik wensen vriendenelkaar veel geluk en gezondheid toe.

Met Schindler’s List, een film over het leven van Oskar Schindler, een Duits industrieel die in de Tweede Wereldoorlog met de inzet van al zijn financiële middelen meer dan 1100 Joden redde van de dood in Auschwitz, schreefregisseur Steven Spielberg filmgeschiedenis. De muziek bij deze - in Amerika met maar liefst zeven Oscars bekroonde - film werd geschreven door John Williams, de componist met wie Spielberg in het verleden al meer succesvolle productiesmaakte (onder andere Indiana Jones, Jawa, E.T. en Jurassic Park). Jan de Haan maakte een inspirerende bewerking van het pakkende thema uit Schindler’s List.

Die verblüffend leidenschaftlichen Melodien aus John Williams Musik zum Film Schindlers Liste flossen in dieses Arrangement ein, das Musiker und Publikum gefangen nehmen wird. Spectrum (dat werd opgedragen aan de fanfare St. Cecilia uit Helden-Dorp naar aanleiding van het negentigjarig bestaan) omvat een reeks vloeiend in elkaar overgaande variaties die zijn gebaseerd op melodische en ritmische motievenuit het Heldense volkslied. Het lied komt niet in zijn geheel naar voren, maar vormde de basis voor het spectrum van de gebruikte intervallen, (gecamoufleerde) melodielijnen en harmonische structuren in deze compositie.

Spring has finally arrived. The days grow longer, birds prepare to nest, trees turn green and plants begin to bloom as nature wakes up from her winter sleep. This, and the fact that the composer’s third grandson was born in the spring, were the inspiration for Spring Song.

Het is voorjaar! De dagen worden langer, de vogels bouwen hun nestjes, bomen hullen zich in het groen en alle planten beginnen te bloeien. Kortom: de natuur ontwaakt uit haar winterslaap. En precies in dit jaargetijde zag ook hetderde kleinkind van de componist het levenslicht. Lente en nieuw leven: voor Jan de Haan twee prachtige inspiratiebronnen voor zijn nieuwe werk Spring Song!

Es ist Frühling. Die Tage werden länger, Vögel bauen ihre Nester, die Bäume schlagen aus und alle Pflanzen beginnen zu blühen. Kurz gesagt: Die Natur erwacht aus ihrem Winterschlaf. Der Frühling und der glückliche Umstand, dass just zu dieser Jahreszeit sein dritter Enkel das Licht der Welt erblickte inspirierte den Komponisten zu seinem Stück Spring Song.

The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewel l, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.

Dan volgt ¡Adiós españoles! over het einde van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog.Rembrandt� ��s Night Watch beschrijft de ontwikkeling op cultureel gebied: in de Gouden Eeuw schilderde Rembrandt van Rijn zijn beroemde Nachtwacht. Deel vier, The Admiral, begint met Rule Britannia,waarna de Nederlandse admiraal Michiel de Ruyter de Engelsen een toontje lager laat zingen, er is zelfs kanongebulder te horen. Dan klinkt een fragment van het Nederlandse liedje dat aan Michiel de Ruyter is gewijd, waarna een passendslot volgt.

Die Aufmerksamkeit der Zuhörer ist bei Kees Schoonenbeeks spannender musikalischer Geschichtsstunde garantiert!

Questo periodo è conosciuto con il nome di Secolo d’Oro (The Golden Age) e corrisponde ad una fase di sviluppo eccezionale dei Paesi Bassi sia sul piano coloniale e militare, sia sul piano culturale, intellettuale e artistico.

The introductory theme of this composition echoes the majestic size of the mountains that are visible from the picture-postcard Cortina d’Ampezzo—t he so called Queen of the Dolomites. Then we hear a lyrical theme, in which we feel the peacefulness of the surrounding countryside. We can even hear the hustle and bustle of the popular ski resort, before the two opening themes return in reverse order to bring this musical sight-seeing excursion to a close.

Jacob de Haan neemt ons mee naar de majestueuze bergen rondom het schilderachtige Italiaanse bergdorp Cortina d’Ampezzo, ook bekend als de koningin van de Dolomieten. Het beginthema verbeeldt de imposante rotsformaties die je rondom je ziet in Cortina. Dan klinkt een lyrisch thema, refererend aan het vredige berglandschap van deze contreien. Ook de bedrijvigheid van het geliefde wintersportdorp weerklinkt in deze mooie compositie. Beide thema’s komen nog één keer terug in omgekeerde volgorde om tenslotte dit muzikale panorama te besluiten.

Im Eingangsthema dieser Komposition hallt die majestätische Größe der Bergformation wider, die vom malerischen Cortina d’Ampezzo - der so genannten Königin der Dolomiten“ - aus sichtbar ist. Dann erklingt ein lyrisches Thema, in dem der Frieden der umliegenden Berglandschaft zu spüren ist. Auch die Betriebsamkeit des beliebten Wintersportortes ist zu hören, bevor die beiden Eingangsthemen in umgekehrter Reihenfolge den musikalischen Rundblick beenden.

De retour en ville, nous entendons les accents joyeux de l’harmonie locale qui joue pour les vacanciers descendant des téléphériques. L’œuvre s’achève avec les sons grandioses du motif initial, qui exprime nouveau la beauté imposante de la couronne montagneuse.

Corti na d’Ampezzo è anche chiamata “la regina delle Dolomiti” per la bellezza mozzafiato del suo paesaggio. Cortina è la meta obbligatoria invernale di VIP italiani ma anche di molti turisti desiderosi di affrontare le splendide piste d’inverno e gli innumerevoli sentieri per indimenticabili passeggiate d’estate. La musica di Jacob de Haan riflette la sublime bellezza dei paesaggi ed è un vero omaggio alla natura.

Firm friendship was the inspiration for the composer whilst writing Friends Forever. Flowing melodic lines create a warm, relaxed atmosphere.

Forever Friends handelt von Freundschaft, ganz besonders zwischen Menschen mit gegensätzlichen Charakteren.

C’est l’expérience d’une profonde amitié qui a inspiré Jacob de Haan l’écriture de Forever Friends (“Amis pour la vie”). La fluidité des lignes mélodiques installe une atmosphère détendue et pleine de chaleur.

‘Toccata Festiva’ was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking, the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised, later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the ‘Toccata Festiva’: on the one hand the different themes are developed freely, on the other, the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. Partof the composition is written in a more or less archaic tone idiom, referring to the period from which the toccata form originates (16th century).

Roland Kernen hat in seiner Bearbeitung des bekannten und beliebten Adventsliedes die vier Liedverse mit verschiedenen Verzierungen ausgeschmückt und um ein Vorspiel, ein Nachspiel und mehrere Zwischenspiele ergänzt. Dabei blieb der für das 17. Jahrhundert typische Rhythmuswechsel erhalten. So entstand eine abwechslungsreiche Komposition als Künderin der Frohen Botschaft.

Es kommt ein Schiff, geladen est un célèbre choral allemand du temps de l’Avent, dans lequel la Nativité s’exprime par la métaphore du bateau portant la cargaison divine jusque sur la terre où il jette l’ancre. Daté du début du XVe siècle, ce choral a la particularité d’être la fois en ternaire et en binaire. Utilisant différentes ornementations, Roland Kernen a réalisé un arrangement de quatre des six strophes du cantique, auxquelles ont été ajoutés un prélude, un postlude et des interludes. La pièce constitue ainsi une composition variée qui installe un climat de mystère étonnant avant de fêter la naissance de Jésus Noël.

De band Toto, die werd opgericht in 1977, scoorde internationale superhits met een bijzondere mix van rock en een meer symfonische sound. In de jaren 1982 en 1983 kon je de radio niet aanzetten of je hoorde de klanken van Rosannaof Africa. Klaas van der Woude maakte een arrangement waarin hij deze beide nummers en Stop Loving You verwerkte tot een meeslepend geheel.

Die Popmusik der 80er-Jahre erlebt derzeit ein großes Revival. Viele Hits von damals werden erfolgreich neu aufgelegt und kommen bei Alt und Jung gleichermaßen gut an. Die drei Tophits der kalifornischen Popgruppe Toto, für Fanfareorchester eingerichtet von Klaas van der Woude, liegen also voll im Trend!

Evenals Melody in F van Anton Rubinstein kan deze compositie van Jan Hadermann worden beschouwd als een fraai ‘muzikaal moment’. Melody in Five verwijst naar de 5/8 maatsoort waarin het werd geschreven. Juist deze maatsoortgeeft de compositie haar rustige, wiegende karakter. Melody in Five: een werk waarin de technische speelvaardigheid ondergeschikt is aan de muzikaliteit. Een prachtig intermezzo.

Der Titel Melody in Five verweist auf den 5/8-Takt, in dem das Stück gschrieben ist. Diese Taktart verleiht der Komposition ihren friedvollen, wiegenden Charakter. Bei diesem Werk muss auf das Gefühl der Musik mehr Wert gelegt werden als auf technisches Können. Jan Hadermann schrieb diese musikalische Episode für die Mitglieder der Brass Band St. Cecilia in Hombeek, Belgien.

A mirage is an illusion, something without substance that does not really exist. Although not real, its unattainable nature is perfect for musical inspiration. Composer Jacob de Haan was strolling through a picturesque forest of the Dutch Gelderland when he thought he saw a body of water. While there was no water, its mere image created waves that can be relived in De Haan’s original composition, Mirage.

Mirage is het Engelse synoniem voor ‘Fata Morgana‘. De creatieve aanleiding voor deze compositie was dan ook het verhaal van een wandelaar die in een boslandschap in Gelderland water denkt te zien. Het in het triodeel deelsgezongen ‘wandelthema� � brengt de vreugde die de toeschouwer aan dit natuurverschijnsel beleeft bijzonder goed tot uitdrukking.

Mirag e“ ist ein englisches Synonym für Fata Morgana“. Als kreativer Anstoß für diese Komposition diente Jacob de Haan ein Spaziergänger, der durch eine Waldlandschaft im holländischen Gelderland geht und dabei glaubt, ein Gewässer zu sehen. Das im Trio teilweise gesungene Spaziergangs“-Thema bringt die Freude an diesem Naturerlebnis besonders gut zum Ausdruck.

« Fata Morgana » est le nom donné un phénomène de mirage, et que l'on attribuait la fée Morgane. Du mirage, nous passons aux notes joyeuses d’une étrange promenade en forêt où la lumière donne la sensation de l’existence d’une nappe d’eau au pied d’un arbre. Mirage ou réalité ? vous de le découvrir. Ce qui est s r, c’est que le Thème de la promenade (Trio) est partiellement chanté.

Una sorta di miraggio ha ispirato Jacob de Haan a comporre questo brano, prendendo spunto appunto da un “miraggio” di uno specchio d’acqua che gli si è presentato durante una passeggiata in una foresta in Olanda. Il tema della “passeggiata” parzialmente cantato nel trio, enfatizza gli spettacoli che la natura ci offre.
