The young have
the future. This is the
statement made at the
beginning of ‘Like
a Child’ by
Andreas Ludwig
Schulte. The opening
radiates strength and
ambition, but one is also
made to wonder which
direction will be chosen,
which choices will have
to be made. After the
introduction the first
steps on the path of life
are taken, still somewhat
unsteadily (the 3/4th
time used illustrates
this uncertainty).
However, the child has
now set off and will meet
the future with an open
mind, unafraid, even
though experience will
teach it how easily it
can be
hurt. Fortunately, it
is sometimes allowed to
be vulnerable and it
discovers there will
always be someone to
offer shelter,support and
love. (Adagio) The
last part breathes a far
greater independence.
Youth is able to face the
future, it can even take
on the whole world!
Wie de jeugd
heeft, heeft de toekomst.
Met dit statement begint
deze compositie van
Andreas Ludwig Schulte.
Het begin straalt
kracht en ambitie uit.
Maar welke kant gaat het
op, welke keuzes moeten
gemaakt worden? Na de
inleidingworden de eerste
schreden op het levenspad
gezet, het is nog wat
onzeker (de driekwarts
maat voelt een beetje
wankel). Toch gaan we
daarna op pad,
onbevangen, met open
vizier de toekomst
tegemoet al blijken er
toch noch
kwetsbaremomenten te
bestaan. Gelukkig
mogen we dat soms ook
zijn en dan is er altijd
wel iemand bij wie we
geborgenheid, steun en
liefde ontvangen.
(Adagio) Het laatste
deel straalt al veel meer
zelfstandigheid uit. Laat
maarkomen die toekomst,
we kunnen de wereld
aan!

This piece was
commissioned by Matsudo
Citizen Wind Orchestra
for their 30th
anniversary concert and
premiered by the band
conducted by Kenichiro
Hasunuma in July 2009.
This piece is typical of
Satoshi Yagisawa in that
it depicts a magnificent
spectacle. This one is
set in ancient Egypt and
is based on the story
depicted in the famous
film The Ten Commandments
(1956, directed by Cecil
B. DeMille). One day
Moses, who was raised by
the rich royal family,
found out that he was
originally Hebrew. The
Hebrews had been forced
to live as slaves.
Ramses, the prince
directly descended from
the Pharaoh, envied
Moses' strength and
popularity. After
internal argument Moses
decides todeliver the
Hebrew from the Pharaoh's
tyranny and escape from
Egypt with them.The music
starts with brilliant
royal fanfare and depicts
magnificent architecture,
the Hebrew people forced
into hard labour, and the
slaves escaping from the
Pharaoh's tyranny. At the
climax they are at crisis
point, trapped by the
sea. Moses waves his
staff and the miracle
happens; the sea parts
and Hebrew people
successfully escape.
Following on from
Perseus - A Hero's
Quest in the Heavens,
this work Moses and
Ramses is another
piece written in the
dramatic style favoured
by Satoshi Yagisawa.
Het oude
testament verhaalt van
Mozes die met zijn volk
Egypte verlaat, na zijn
strijd met de jonge farao
Ramses. De film The
Ten Commandments uit
1956 is gebaseerd op dit
verhaal. Satoshi Yagisawa
zette de beelden van
dezemonumentale film om
in de karakteristiek
dramatische stijl die zo
eigen is voor de
verfilming. De muzikale
beelden geven het
koninklijke paleis weer,
maar ook de
architectonische pracht
en praal van het oude
Egypte. Ook komen
deverlossing van de
slavernij en de uittocht
aan bod. Natuurlijk met
als hoogtepunt dat Mozes
de zee opent en het volk
door de zee uit Egypte
leidt. Een fantastisch
spektakel!

Streit mit dem jungen
Ramses mit seinem ganzen
Volk, Israel, das Land
verliess, erzahlt das
alte Testament und der
darauf basierende Film
Die zehn Gebote von 1965.
Satoshi Yagisawa setzte
die Bilder dieses
monumentalen Films in
seinem charakteristischen
dramatischen Stil um: Die
musikalischen Bilder
zeigen den Konigshof, die
architektonische Pracht
des alten Agypten, das
versklavte Volk Israel
und natürlich die
Flucht mit dem Hohepunkt,
als Moses das Meer teilt.

dramatique, flamboyante
et epique. L'action se

du realisateur americain
Cecil B. DeMille. Le
jeune Moisegrandit au

adulte, il decouvre ses
origines hebraiques. Or,
Pharaon a reduit les
Hebreux en esclavage. Le
prince Ramses, descendant

Moise. Apres une querelle
grave, Moise doit fuir
dans le desert. Dans son
exil, il decide de
delivrer son peuple de la
tyrannie de Pharaon et de
le mener hors d'Egypte.
L'œuvre debute avec
une fanfare royale
flamboyante qui sonne la
grandeur architecturale

a la tyrannie du Pharaon.
Lorsque la musique

The
hymn Nun ruhen alle
Walder (Now All Forests
Rest), arranged by J.S.
Bach (No. 6, So sei nun,
Seele, deine, from
Cantata BWV 13), is a
guiding light throughout
this four-movement
composition. Pütz
wrote this work as a
musical outcry against
the wilful, profit-driven
destruction of our
environment. When Bach
used the word ruhen (to
rest) over 350 years ago,
it probably had a
different nuance from the
meaning it has today. At
the beginning of the 21st
century - the so-called
age of progress - nun
ruhen alle Walder should
mean now all forests die
. Massive
industrialization and
globalization, coupled
with pure greed,
corruption, political
scandals, an
ever-wideninggap between
the rich and poor, and
other such senseless
human actions, are
pushing our blue planet
closer and closer to the
point of no return. This
work is not intended to
be a ranting accusation.
It should remind us of
the beauty and harmony
that can exist all around
us in nature, if we take
care of it. Pütz
hopes that this will, one
day, help put a greater
emphasis on humanity's
survival, and coexistence
with nature rather than
the exploitation
described earlier. All
four texts were created
by Australian poet Graeme
King, whose works were
discovered by Pütz,
by chance on the
internet. Pütz was
especially captivated by
King's clarity, and
intrigued by the
possibilities of adapting
and melding the strong
rhythmical structure of
King's writing with his
own musical language. The
four movements are as
follows: 1. Tears of
Nature 2. Grrrevolution
3. Stand up! 4. Tomorrow
The world premiere of
Four Earth Songs took
place on 7 July 2009 at
the 14th WASBE-Conference
in Cincinnati (USA). This
work is dedicated in
friendship to Jouke
Hoekstra, conductor, and
the Frysk Fanfare Orkest
(the Frisian

De hymne Nun
ruhen alle Walder,
gearrangeerd door J.S.
Bach (nr. 6, So sei nun,
Seele, deine, uit cantate
BWV 13), is de leidraad
in deze vierdelige
compositie. Putz schreef
het werk als een muzikaal
protest tegen de
moedwillige,op winstbejag
gebaseerde vernietiging
van ons milieu. Toen Bach
het woord 'ruhen'
(rusten) meer dan 350
jaar geleden gebruikte,
lag er waarschijnlijk een
andere nuance in dan
tegenwoordig. Aan het
begin van de 21e eeuw -
dezogenaamde eeuw van de
vooruitgang - zou 'nun
ruhen alle Walder' zelfs
kunnen betekenen: 'nu
sterven alle bossen'. De
grootschalige
industrialisatie en
globalisering, in
combinatie met pure
hebzucht, corruptie,
politieke schandalen,een
groeiende kloof tussen
arm en rijk, en andere
dwaze menselijke
verrichtingen, brengen
onze blauwe planeet
steeds verder in de
problemen, tot er
misschien geen weg terug
meer is. Dit werk is niet
bedoeld als een
beschuldigendetirade. Het
moet ons wijzen op de
schoonheid en harmonie
die in de natuur om ons
heen kan bestaan, als we
er goed voor zorgen. Putz
hoopt dat er op een dag
meer nadruk gelegd zal
worden op het overleven
van de mensheid
invreedzame co-existentie
met de natuur, zonder de
eerdergenoemde
uitbuiting. Alle vier de
teksten zijn geschreven
door de Australische
dichter Graeme King,
wiens werk Putz bij
toeval tegenkwam op het
internet. Hij werd
getroffendoor Kings
helderheid en raakte
geintrigeerd door de
mogelijkheid de sterke
ritmische structuur van
Kings teksten om te
zetten in zijn eigen
muzikale taal. De vier
delen zijn de volgende:
1. Tears of Nature 2.
Grrrevolution 3.Stand up!
4. Tomorrow De

Der
Choral Nun ruhen alle
Walder, hier in einer
Bearbeitung von J.S. Bach
(Nr. 6 So sei nun, Seele,
deine aus der Kantate BWV
13), zieht sich wie ein
roter Faden durch diese
viersatzige Komposition,
die als musikalischer
Aufschrei (Anfang!) gegen
die mutwillige,
profitgesteuerte
Zerstorung unserer Umwelt
gedacht ist. Sicher hatte

Prog
ram Notes: It was a happy
coincidence that the
commission for SINFONIA
XVI: TRANSCENDENTAL
VIENNA came from the
Henry David Thoreau
School located in Vienna,
Virginia. Thoreau is one
of the magic names in
American culture: Henry
David Thoreau, one of the
leading figures of the
Transcendentalist
movement, centered in
19th-century New England,
left us a body of unique
philosophical and
poetical writings. To
utter the words, Walden
Pond, is to invoke an
America long past in
physical actuality, but
still present in the
minds and hearts of many
American citizens. The
name, Vienna, of course,
summons thoughts of the
Old World: culture, fine
food, wine, civilized
cities. While
contemplating the form
that SINFONIA XVI should
take, I found myself
thinking of two pillars
of Viennese culture:
expressionism and the
waltz. Musically
speaking, expressionism
reached a zenith in the
works of Arnold
Schoenberg and Alban
Berg. It was Berg, in
particular, that I wanted
to invoke in the outer
movements of my
composition. I knew I
would also have to
include a waltz, and an
invocation of the
mysterious forces that
are contained in both
expressionism and
transcendentalism. Thus
was the structure of the
work generated. The outer
movements with their
vision of the night sky
and the stars, Aldebaran
and Sirius, frame the
central movements, which
are essentially two
versions of the same
material, and are quieter
and less dramatic. The
outer movements are
symmetrical, and share
both pitch and rhythmic
materials. Accordingly, I
see the work as a ternary
form, with the central
movements forming a unit
within the outer frame: A
(Movement 1) B (Movements
2 & 3) A' (Movement 4).
Harmonically, the work
can be summarized by the
two pitch-series which
occur in the opening bars
of Movement 1: the
initial 12-note row, with
a tonal center on F-sharp
(measures 1-6), and the
subsequent D-minor Dorian
7-note row (beginning in
measure 14). Aspects of
these materials occur in
all four movements, but
they are most strongly
present in Movements 1
and 4. Note that the
12-note row is not
subjected to the usual
serial procedures, but
instead is treated as a
signifier and is left
unchanged. Since the
fourth movement takes up
where the first movement
leaves off, I can
conceive of one
interpretation of
SINFONIA XVI as an
evocation of Thoreau
himself contemplating two
of the brightest stars on
a clear, cold night.
Aldebaran is an orange,
first-magnitude star,
located in the
constellation Taurus;
Sirius, the Dog Star, is
the brightest star in the
sky, and is located in
the constellation Canis
Major. Thoreau interrupts
his star-gazing to
entertain some inward
thoughts, waking dreams,
as it were, then returns
his gaze to the splendid
night sky and all its
treasures. Although many
other interpretations of
the material are
possible, it is important
to remember that the
abstract materials of the
piece -- pitch, rhythm,
structure -- are what
count the most. Ensemble

fervor in this dynamic
yet short micro-symphony.
Begin with Takeoff as the
brass fanfares and
woodwind flourishes
ignite the sky with
anticipation. Drift into
the embrace of Under the
Wing, a soulful
reflection adorned with
expansive melodies. Feel
the tempestuous thrill of
Cloudburst, a scherzo of
storm and spirit, only to

jubilant dance of Blue
Skies, a finale that
revisits cherished motifs
and culminates in

Take an
imaginary flight on the
ever-graceful
winged-horse Pegasus!
Using just six notes,
this work manages to
capture the grandeur of
this mythical creature
through the triumphant
melodies that are passed
around the ensemble.
Harmonies are
surprisingly rich for a
work at this level and
make the piece sound much
harder than it really is.
Fabulous!
In
Greek mythology, Pegasus
was the winged horse-god
son of Poseidon and the
Gorgon Medusa. During his
life, he carried
thunderbolts for the god
Zeus and was ridden by
Eos, the goddess of dawn.
Today, the word pegasus
has come to refer to any
winged horse, and the
symbol endures as one of
endless fascination. The
music is quite lively in
nature, and portrays an
imaginary flight of the
ever-graceful equine of
myth. The introduction
takes us up-up-and-away
in the form of a bright
trumpet fanfare. The
melody is then played by
lower instruments,
depicting peril during
flight. The full ensemble
then comes together,
giving a picture of the
winged wonder in all his
glory leading to a
thrilling
finish.

Washed up on
the Phaeacian shore after
a shipwreck, Odysseus is
introduced to King
Alcinous. As he sits in
the palace, he tells the
Phaeacians of his
wanderings since leaving
Troy. Odysseus and his
men fi rst landed on the
island of the Cicones
wherethey sacked the city
of Ismarus. From there,
great storms swept them
to the land of the
hospitable Lotus Eaters.
Then they sailed to the
land of the Cyclopes.
Odysseus and twelve of
his men entered the cave
of Polyphemus. After the
single-eyed giantmade
handfuls of his men into
meals, Odysseus fi nally
defeated him. He got him
drunk and once he had
fallen asleep, he and his
men stabbed a glowing
spike into the
Cyclop’s single
eye, completely blinding
him. They escaped by
clinging to the belliesof
some sheep. Once aboard,
Odysseus taunted the
Cyclop by revealing him
his true identity.
Enraged, Polyphemus
hurled rocks at the ship,
trying to sink it. After
leaving the
Cyclopes’ island,
they arrived at the home
of Aeolus, ruler of the
winds.Aeolus off ered
Odysseus a bag trapping
all the strong winds
within except one - the
one which would take him
straight back to Ithaca.
As the ship came within
sight of Ithaca, the
crewmen, curious about
the bag, decided to open
it. The winds escapedand
stirred up a storm.
Odysseus and his crew
came to the land of the
cannibalistic
Laestrygonians, who sank
all but one of the ships.
The survivors went next
to Aeaea, the island of
the witch-goddess Circe.
Odysseus sent out a
scouting party butCirce
turned them into pigs.
With the help of an
antidote the god Hermes
had given him, Odysseus
managed to overpower the
goddess and forced her to
change his men back to
human form. When it was
time for Odysseus to
leave, Circe told him to
sail tothe realm of the
dead to speak with the
spirit of the seer
Tiresias. One
day’s sailing took
them to the land of the
Cimmerians. There, he
performed sacrifi ces to
attract the souls of the
dead. Tiresias told him
what would happen to him
next. He thengot to talk
with his mother,
Anticleia, and met the
spirits of Agamemnon,
Achilles, Patroclus,
Antilochus, Ajax and
others. He then saw the
souls of the damned
Tityos, Tantalus, and
Sisyphus. Odysseus soon
found himself mobbed by
souls. He
becamefrightened, ran
back to his ship, and
sailed away. While back
at Aeaea, Circe told him
about the dangers he
would have to face on his
way back home. She
advised him to avoid
hearing the song of the
Sirens; but if he really
felt he had to hear,
thenhe should be tied to
the mast of the ship,
which he did. Odysseus
then successfully steered
his crew past Charybdis
(a violent whirlpool) and
Scylla (a multiple-headed
monster), but Scylla
managed to devour six of
his men. Finally,
Odysseus and hissurviving
crew approached the
island where the Sun god
kept sacred cattle.
Odysseus wanted to sail
past, but the crewmen
persuaded him to let them
rest there. Odysseus
passed Circe’s
counsel on to his men.
Once he had fallen
asleep, his men
impiouslykilled and ate
some of the cattle. When
the Sun god found out, he
asked Zeus to punish
them. Shortly after they
set sail from the island,
Zeus destroyed the ship
and all the men died
except for Odysseus.
After ten days, Odysseus
was washed up on
theisland of the nymph
Calypso.
Nachdem
er an die Küste der
Phäaker gespült
wurde, wird Odysseus dem
König Akinoos
vorgestellt. In dessen
Palast erzählt er den
Phäakern von den
Fahrten nach seiner
Abreise aus Troja.
Odysseus und seine
Männer landen
zunächst auf
denKikonen, einer
Inselgruppe, wo sie die
Stadt Ismaros einnehmen.
Von dort aus treiben sie
mächtige Stürme
zum Land der
gastfreundlichen
Lotophagen
(Lotos-Essern). Dann
segeln sie zum Land der
Kyklopen (Zyklopen).
Odysseus und seine
zwölf Mannenbetreten
die Höhle von
Poloyphem, dem Sohn
Poseidons. Nachdem dieser
einige der Männer
verspeist hat,
überwaÃ…Nltigt
ihn Odysseus, indem er
ihn betrunken macht und
dann mit einem

somitblendet. Odysseus
und die übrigen
Männer fl iehen an den
Bäuchen von Schafen
hängend. Wieder an
Bord, provoziert Odysseus
den Zyklopen, indem er
ihm seine wahre
Identität verrät.
Wütend bewirft
Polyphem das Schiff mit
Steinen undversucht, es
zu versenken. Nachdem sie
die Insel der Kyklopen

Odysseus und seine Mannen
ins Reich von Aiolos, dem

Washed up on
the Phaeacian shore after
a shipwreck, Odysseus is
introduced to King
Alcinous. As he sits in
the palace, he tells the
Phaeacians of his
wanderings since leaving
Troy. Odysseus and his
men fi rst landed on the
island of the Cicones
wherethey sacked the city
of Ismarus. From there,
great storms swept them
to the land of the
hospitable Lotus Eaters.
Then they sailed to the
land of the Cyclopes.
Odysseus and twelve of
his men entered the cave
of Polyphemus. After the
single-eyed giantmade
handfuls of his men into
meals, Odysseus fi nally
defeated him. He got him
drunk and once he had
fallen asleep, he and his
men stabbed a glowing
spike into the
Cyclop’s single
eye, completely blinding
him. They escaped by
clinging to the belliesof
some sheep. Once aboard,
Odysseus taunted the
Cyclop by revealing him
his true identity.
Enraged, Polyphemus
hurled rocks at the ship,
trying to sink it. After
leaving the
Cyclopes’ island,
they arrived at the home
of Aeolus, ruler of the
winds.Aeolus off ered
Odysseus a bag trapping
all the strong winds
within except one - the
one which would take him
straight back to Ithaca.
As the ship came within
sight of Ithaca, the
crewmen, curious about
the bag, decided to open
it. The winds escapedand
stirred up a storm.
Odysseus and his crew
came to the land of the
cannibalistic
Laestrygonians, who sank
all but one of the ships.
The survivors went next
to Aeaea, the island of
the witch-goddess Circe.
Odysseus sent out a
scouting party butCirce
turned them into pigs.
With the help of an
antidote the god Hermes
had given him, Odysseus
managed to overpower the
goddess and forced her to
change his men back to
human form. When it was
time for Odysseus to
leave, Circe told him to
sail tothe realm of the
dead to speak with the
spirit of the seer
Tiresias. One
day’s sailing took
them to the land of the
Cimmerians. There, he
performed sacrifi ces to
attract the souls of the
dead. Tiresias told him
what would happen to him
next. He thengot to talk
with his mother,
Anticleia, and met the
spirits of Agamemnon,
Achilles, Patroclus,
Antilochus, Ajax and
others. He then saw the
souls of the damned
Tityos, Tantalus, and
Sisyphus. Odysseus soon
found himself mobbed by
souls. He
becamefrightened, ran
back to his ship, and
sailed away. While back
at Aeaea, Circe told him
about the dangers he
would have to face on his
way back home. She
advised him to avoid
hearing the song of the
Sirens; but if he really
felt he had to hear,
thenhe should be tied to
the mast of the ship,
which he did. Odysseus
then successfully steered
his crew past Charybdis
(a violent whirlpool) and
Scylla (a multiple-headed
monster), but Scylla
managed to devour six of
his men. Finally,
Odysseus and hissurviving
crew approached the
island where the Sun god
kept sacred cattle.
Odysseus wanted to sail
past, but the crewmen
persuaded him to let them
rest there. Odysseus
passed Circe’s
counsel on to his men.
Once he had fallen
asleep, his men
impiouslykilled and ate
some of the cattle. When
the Sun god found out, he
asked Zeus to punish
them. Shortly after they
set sail from the island,
Zeus destroyed the ship
and all the men died
except for Odysseus.
After ten days, Odysseus
was washed up on
theisland of the nymph
Calypso.
Nachdem
er an die Küste der
Phäaker gespült
wurde, wird Odysseus dem
König Akinoos
vorgestellt. In dessen
Palast erzählt er den
Phäakern von den
Fahrten nach seiner
Abreise aus Troja.
Odysseus und seine
Männer landen
zunächst auf
denKikonen, einer
Inselgruppe, wo sie die
Stadt Ismaros einnehmen.
Von dort aus treiben sie
mächtige Stürme
zum Land der
gastfreundlichen
Lotophagen
(Lotos-Essern). Dann
segeln sie zum Land der
Kyklopen (Zyklopen).
Odysseus und seine
zwölf Mannenbetreten
die Höhle von
Poloyphem, dem Sohn
Poseidons. Nachdem dieser
einige der Männer
verspeist hat,
überwaÃ…Nltigt
ihn Odysseus, indem er
ihn betrunken macht und
dann mit einem
glühenden Spieß
in dessen einziges Auge
sticht und ihn
somitblendet. Odysseus
und die übrigen
Männer fl iehen an den
Bäuchen von Schafen
hängend. Wieder an
Bord, provoziert Odysseus
den Zyklopen, indem er
ihm seine wahre
Identität verrät.
Wütend bewirft
Polyphem das Schiff mit
Steinen undversucht, es
zu versenken. Nachdem sie
die Insel der Kyklopen
verlassen haben, kommen
Odysseus und seine Mannen
ins Reich von Aiolos, dem
Herr der Winde. Aiolos
schenkt ihm einen Beutel,
in dem alle Winde
eingesperrt sind,
außer dem, der ihn
direktzurück nach
Ithaka treiben soll. Als
das Schiff in Sichtweite
von Ithaka ist, öff
nen die neugierigen
Seemänner den
Windsack. Die Winde entfl
iehen und erzeugen einen
Sturm. Odysseus und seine
Mannschaft verschlägt
es ins Land
derkannibalischen
Laistrygonen, die alle
ihre Schiff e, bis auf
eines, versenken. Die
Ãœberlebenden reisen
weiter nach Aiaia, der
Insel der Zauberin Kirke.
Odysseus sendet einen
Spähtrupp aus, der von
Kirke aber in Schweine
verwandelt wird. Mit
Hilfeeines Gegenmittels
vom Götterboten Hermes
kann Odysseus Kirke
überwaÃ…Nltigen
und er zwingt sie, seinen
Gefährten wieder ihre
menschliche Gestalt
zurückzugeben. Als
er wieder aufbrechen
will, rät Kirke ihm,
den Seher Teiresias in
derUnterwelt aufzusuchen
und zu befragen. Eine
Tagesreise führt
sie dann ins Land der
Kimmerer, nahe dem
Eingang des Hades. Dort
bringt Odysseus Opfer, um
die Seelen der Toten
anzurufen. Teireisas sagt
ihm sein Schicksal
voraus. Dann darf
Odysseusmit seiner Mutter
Antikleia und den Seelen
von Agamemnon, Achilles,
Patroklos, Antilochus,
Ajax und anderen Toten
sprechen. Dann sieht er
die Seelen der Verdammten
Tityos, Tantalos und
Sisyphos. Bald wird
Odysseus selbst von den
Seelen gequält,
kehrtvoll Angst zu seinem
Schiff zurück und
segelt davon. In Aiaia
hatte Kirke ihn vor den
drohenden Gefahren der
Heimreise gewarnt. Sie
riet ihm, den Gesang der
Sirenen zu vermeiden,
wenn er aber unbedingt
zuhören müsse,
solle er sich an denMast
seines Schiff es bindet
lassen, was er dann auch
tut. Dann führt
Odysseus seine Mannschaft
erfolgreich durch die
Meerenge zwischen Skylla

to the main thematic
