The
cantata Nach dir, Herr,
verlanget mich (O my
Lord, I long for thee)
BWV 150 is one of the
earliest cantatas from
Bach's Muhlhausen period.
Its authenticity was long
disputed, partly because
of the stylistic
characteristics of this
early work, but also
because the cantata only
survives in sources
dating from the period
after Bach's death.
However, in recent years
a hidden dedication to
Conrad Meckbach, a member
of the Muhlhausen town
council and patron of
Bach, has been
deciphered: the initial
letters of the free
poetry reveal the
acrostic Doctor Conrad
Meckbach (in the 18th
century spelling),
revealing a link to the
city of Muhlhausen and
almost certainly
confirming Bach's
authorship of the
cantata. The occasion of
the composition of the
work is still unknown.
The small instrumental
scoring for just two
violins, bassoon, and
continuo, plus the fact
that only the soprano is
given a solo movement,
suggest a performance
with modest resources.

“A
lmiraâ€,
Handel’s first
opera, was well received
when premiered in 1705 at
the Theater am
Gänsemarkt in Hamburg.
The director was Reinhard
Keiser, who, remarkably,
had himself already set
Friedrich Christian
Feustking’s text
to music. The role of
Fernando was sung by
Johann Mattheson. The
translation used by
Handel leaves several
Italian arias in their
original language,
resulting in a delightful
mixture of German and
Italian.
The opera
which, after sundry
entangled romances, ends
in the wedding of three
couples, is characterised
by exuberant scenes: the
procession at
Almira’s crowning
ceremony, a duel, a
prison scene and a
masked-ball involving the
three continents Europe,
Africa and Asia.
The vocal score
to “Almiraâ€
by George Frideric Handel
brings about a small
sensation: Whilst
conducting a reenactment
of this work in 1732,
Georg Philipp Telemann
removed the Aria no. 28
“Ingrato,
spietato†from his
conducting score. Since
then this aria has been
deemed lost. Due to
necessity only the edited
vocal text devoid of any
music was presented in
the 1994 volume of the
“Halle Handel
Editionâ€.
Thanks to a recently
discovered contemporary
manuscript copy from the
beginning of the 18th
century which was found
in the music library of
the Mariengymnasium in
Jever, this aria has now
been made available to
performers for the first
time in this new vocal
score edition. Previous
to this the corresponding
pages could only be seen
as a facsimile in an
article of the
“Göttinger
Händel-Beiträgeâ
. Now the aria can
be performed again.
Furthermore, with the
help of this new source,
missing measures in the
basso continuo which had
initially been completed
by the editor of the
“Halle Handel
Edition†volume,
could be reconstructed
from the basso continuo
part of the Bellante aria
“Ich brenne
zwar†(no. 71).

Friede
auf Erden op. 13 is
regarded as Arnold
Schoenberg's last tonal
composition and is one of
the few choral works of
the Second Viennese
School. On the same day
that he completed his op.
13, Schoenberg made the
first sketches for his
2nd String Quartet, a key
work in atonal music.
Although Schoenberg later
orchestrated Friede auf
Erden, he intended the
piece to be performed
unaccompanied.To help
rehearsing the work, this
choral score contains the
piano transcription made
by Anton Webern for use
in rehearsals for the
planned first
performance. The text for
op. 13 is a secular
Christmas poem by Conrad
Ferdinand Meyer. At the
time of its composition
(1907), Schoenberg
thought the vision of a
reine Harmonie unter
Menschen (pure harmony
amongst people) described
in the poem was
conceivable, but he later
distanced himself from
this idea. What remained
is a composition of great
artistic power and depth
- a real showpiece for

The lyrics
for As with Gladness Men
of Old were written by
Englishman William Dix
(1837--1898) in the
1860s, reportedly on the
day of the Epiphany while
Dix was sick in bed. The
tune was included in a
collection of German
chorales edited by Conrad
Kocher and published in
the 1830s. As a testimony
to the flexibility of
such music, the hymn is
also sung during
Thanksgiving under the
title For the Beauty of
the Earth.
This
arrangement for saxophone
quartet (SATBar)---rather
than favoring a soprano
solo with
accompaniment---strives
to include all of the
players in the music
making, particularly by
distributing the melodic
material. All dynamics
and articulations,
minimally marked, should
be taken as suggestions
only, as performers are
encouraged to make their
own interpretations.
