Ferenc Liszt; Boldizsar
Csiky. The arranger
of this work (a
well-known Hungarian
composer living in
Romania) writes: +This
piece has always excited
my imagination, from
several points of view.
First of all, its name.
The German title, the
obstinate one, may refer
to its ostinato
character. This is close
to Liszt's programme
concept, but the French
word 'obstine' is closer
in meaning to stubborn.
There is just a shade of
difference, but to me it
is important, because the
latter suggests the
description of a type of
behaviour, the emotional
state of a dancer's inner
frame of mind abstracted
into movements, expressed
in dance movements, and
this is a fascinating
interpretation. The
demonstration of stubborn
resistance and defiance
to the point of
exhaustion was not a
frequently occurring
phenomenon with Liszt.
Secondly, at the
beginning of the
seventies Zoltan Kocsis
played the piece in
Transylvania. At that
time, I asked the
composer, +Is the
character of the
continuous staccato in
the left hand sharp,
short, or an accompanying
background like a
constant shadow? Is it a
weighty Brahmsian
staccato, an ominous
knocking? - and so on.
Then there are the
Bartokian false relations
that keep recurring in
the work, the B-E flat-G,
etc. That foreshadows
Debussy, creating
harmonic thrills that,
when I hear the work,
keep my continuing
interest alive for it.
Finally, my immediate
reason for arranging the
work was of a family
nature: in connection
with Liszt's jubilee
year, my daughter, who is
a cellist, wanted a 'more
energetic' piece to play
at a bicentenary concert
an addition to the
existing slow, lyrical,
or sombre works written
by Liszt for the
cello.+. $27.45 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 24 hours - In Stock

680160683833. After
decades as a renowned
oboe virtuoso, Katherine
Needleman was improvising
at the piano during the
quarantine summer of 2020
when her ideas congealed
in a powerful way. Within
a week she completed a
16-minute oboe sonata
inspired by the
world’s
overlapping crises. This
riveting three-movement
sonata bears the title
qua resurget ex favilla,
drawn from the Dies Irae
text referring to rising
back from ashes.
Needleman won the
International Double Reed
Society’s
Inaugural Commissioning
Competition by entering
her own recording of this
work, performing as
both oboist and pianist
from her living room. As
a result, IDRS
commissioned her to
compose a new work for
English horn and piano
which was premiered at
their 2021 Virtual
Symposium and programmed
for the live 2022
convention. I’m
not exactly sure how, in
a life consumed by music,
I never put anything on
paper between the time I
stopped at age 10 and the
age of 42. I mean, I have
some ideas why, but that
could easily dissolve
into a feminist manifesto
or a condemnation of my
musical education and the
overwhelming culture of
American oboe playing,
the vehicle through which
I’ve made a living
my entire adult life.
Rather than go there, I
will just say this is the
first piece I put on
paper in my adult
life.Six months into
COVID-19 lockdown in the
US, the world was feeling
pretty weird. I had
familiarized myself with
the music notation
program, Sibelius, for
recent arranging
projects. I had written
some mockeries of A.M.R.
Barret oboe etudes in
response to an assignment
I was given (and did
appropriately first).
When I descended into a
dark chorale in the
middle of the fourth
mockery, I realized I
needed a new vehicle. I
wrote a short, ridiculous
piece for my
husband’s
birthday, and then, the
next night, when
improvising at the piano,
like I’ve done
since I was seven years
old, this piece came to
me. However, this time, I
sketched it out into
Sibelius. Over the course
of the next week, I found
notating and picking
permanent, official notes
to enter into the
computer challenging. But
it was all done on paper
in seven days, and I took
another few for dynamics
and articulations
thinking they might be
useful for someone else,
if I would ever be lucky
enough for someone else
to play it.I don’t
have much to say about
the music of qua resurget
ex favilla itself.
It’s a personal
statement couched in the
feelings of that time.
The US presidential
election was looming
large and ugly in my
mind, well, that and the
end of life as we knew
it, but I also had some
bizarre feeling that
everything would be
okay. $24.99 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks

h's Cantata BWV 69a of
1723, which has remained
largely unknown to the
present day, is now
available for the first
time in a practical
edition with this Carus
publication. It has been
unjustly neglected as it
was overshadowed by the
Cantata BWV 69 of the
same name, a piece which
Bach reworked to
celebrate the
inauguration of Leipzig
Town Council in 1748. On
that occasion Bach
re-used the parts from
1723 for simplicity, and
adapted them for the new
use by means of cuts,
alterations, and
additions - something
which certainly did not
mean that he rejected the
1723 version. This
version can readily be
recovered from the parts
of 1723, if we explore
beyond the alterations of
1748. With its rich wind
instruments and great
opening chorus, the 1723
cantata is in no way
inferior to the later
festive music in terms of
musical splendor. The
text takes the Gospel
reading about the healing
of the deaf and dumb man
as a reason for praise
and thanks for God's good
deeds. In contrast to the
later version, in which
God is thanked for the
wisdom of the Leipzig
authorities, the original
version of 1723 is free
of such contemporary
references, and is
suitable for use in
worship and concerts in
many different ways.

h's Cantata BWV 69a of
1723, which has remained
largely unknown to the
present day, is now
available for the first
time in a practical
edition with this Carus
publication. It has been
unjustly neglected as it
was overshadowed by the
Cantata BWV 69 of the
same name, a piece which
Bach reworked to
celebrate the
inauguration of Leipzig
Town Council in 1748. On
that occasion Bach
re-used the parts from
1723 for simplicity, and
adapted them for the new
use by means of cuts,
alterations, and
additions - something
which certainly did not
mean that he rejected the
1723 version. This
version can readily be
recovered from the parts
of 1723, if we explore
beyond the alterations of
1748. With its rich wind
instruments and great
opening chorus, the 1723
cantata is in no way
inferior to the later
festive music in terms of
musical splendor. The
text takes the Gospel
reading about the healing
of the deaf and dumb man
as a reason for praise
and thanks for God's good
deeds. In contrast to the
later version, in which
God is thanked for the
wisdom of the Leipzig
authorities, the original
version of 1723 is free
of such contemporary
references, and is
suitable for use in
worship and concerts in
many different ways.
