The work takes its nickname, the 'Little Organ Mass', from the organ solo in the 'Benedictus”. This arrangement for female choir (SMezAA) is based on the complete edition of the 'Works of Joseph Haydn”. The original soprano and alto parts have, for the most part, been taken over, as has the soprano solo in the 'Benedictus”. The tenor and bass parts are distributed among the mezzo-sopranos and altos, with a few well thought-out alterations to preserve the harmonic structure. Heribert Breuer has retained the original substance with great skill while giving the work a wholly new and attractive sound. Heribert Breuer was professor of choral conducting and music theory at Berlin University of the Arts until 2010. The 'Harmoniemesse' is the last of these high masses all of which probably received their first performances in celebration of the name-day of Princess Maria Josepha Hermenegild, the prince's wife. The present work was given for the first time on 8 September 1802 in the Bergkirche at Eisenstadt, Haydn himself conducting. Haydn entitled his work simply 'Missa'. The work has acquired the name 'Harmoniemesse' by reason ofthe prominent parts given to the wind instruments ('Harmonie' being a contemporary name for a wind band); the nickname did not become established until the late nineteenth century. Les sonates pour piano de ce recueil avaient probablement une finalité pédagogique et ont été écrites avant l?engagement de Haydn à la cour du prince Esterházy en 1761. Leur désignation comme «Petites sonates de jeunesse» n?est pas due à Haydn, mais à l?éditeur de la présente édition urtext, Georg Feder, le doyen de la philologie haydnienne, qui a réuni ces courtes pièces à destination des «connaisseurs» en un ensemble de sonates. Par HAYDN JOSEPH. Only eleven of the over one hundred symphonies by Joseph Haydn are composed in a minor key. Written in the early 1770s, the Symphony Hob.I:52 in C minor bears some similarities to the slightly earlier Symphony in E minor Hob.I:44 (?Mourning?, BA 10988), not only because they both are composed in a minor key but also because they both feature a pair of horns tuned at different pitches. Haydn seems to have experimented with differently tuned horns inspired by an article in Johann Adam Hiller?s journal ?Musikalische Nachrichten und Anmerkungen? of July 1770, which suggested to tune the horns a minor third apart in order to expand the total horn range. While Haydn followed this recommendation just like that in the E-minor symphony, he chose to have the horns tuned a major sixth apart (high C and E-flat) in the outer movements of the C-minor symphony Hob.
