The
ambitious late work of
Georg Philipp Telemann,
consciously dedicated to
vocal composition, begins
with the Donner-Ode
(1756/1760). As a symbol
thunder represents the
forces of nature, here in
close connection to the
traumatic earthquake of
Lisbon in 1755. The
characteristic
arrangement of the vocal
parts and the scoring
with three trumpets, the
soloistic use of the
timpani and instrumental
ensemble made this
avant-garde work popular
and well known already
during the composer's
lifetime. The new edition
presented here takes into
consideration important,
newly discovered sources
such as the autograph of
the first part. Score

As
one of the three
canticles from the New
Testament, the Magnificat
- the Canticle of Mary -
has at all times held a
prominent position in
church music. Telemann's
setting of Luther's
German translation of the
text bears eloquent
witness both to the
composer's rich
imagination and to his
ability to mold a variety
of musical shapes into a
coherent formal Baroque
architecture. Four solo
movements with colorfully
contrasting
instrumentation are
juxtaposed with four
emphatically homogeneous
choral movements; all of
the latter are in 6/8
meter and in motet
setting with instruments
doubling colla parte.
Particularly the choral
movements are
characterized by lively
text portrayal and a
wealth of at times
dramatic imagery. A work
of exceptional magnetism
for both listeners and
choir singers! Score and
part available separately

In
his Christmas cantata
Allein Gott in der Hoh
sei Ehr (To God, on high
alone be praise),
Telemann celebrates the
birth of Jesus as a
symbol of the
reconciliation with God
and as a message of
salvation for a sinful
humanity. The cantata
makes provision for a
competent baritone
soloist who sings two
challenging arias, as
well as a four-part choir
which provides the
framework for the
composition with two
unadorned chorale verses
and, as a climax, intones
the Christmas paean from
Luke 2:14 Ehre sei Gott
in der Hohe (Praise to
God in his high heaven).
In the first aria, the
muted sounds of the
optional high trumpet
accompany the words O
Freudengetone, wie
lieblich, wie schone (O
music of blessing! How
lovely, how pleasing),
evoking a gentle
Christmas luster. Score

With the
final verse of the Book
of Daniel from the Old
Testament and a related
cantata text, Telemann
mourns the death of a
prominent, but until now
unknown dignitary in a
cantata marked by great
intimacy and with
exquisite
instrumentation. Jakob
Ditmar, the Kantor of the
Nikolaikirche in Berlin,
to whom we owe the
survival of this work,
contributed two beautiful
chorale settings for a
performance in 1757.

In
his Christmas cantata
Allein Gott in der Hoh
sei Ehr (To God, on high
alone be praise),
Telemann celebrates the
birth of Jesus as a
symbol of the
reconciliation with God
and as a message of
salvation for a sinful
humanity. The cantata
makes provision for a
competent baritone
soloist who sings two
challenging arias, as
well as a four-part choir
which provides the
framework for the
composition with two
unadorned chorale verses
and, as a climax, intones
the Christmas paean from
Luke 2:14 Ehre sei Gott

Telemann's
Missa brevis on the
Easter chorale Christ lag
in Todes Banden is one of
his eleven surviving
Latin Missae breves based
on church hymns. The
motet-like composition
calls for a mixed choir
accompanied by a basso
continuo, reinforced by
colla-parte instruments.
However, the mass can
also be performed solely
with an organ
