Jacob vs. Angel
is a piece about crisis
of conscience, ambiguity,
and misinterpretation
expressed through the
depiction of a major
battle, the goal of which
is never made entirely
clear. Based on the
biblical story, the work
is highly programmatic,
with each of the six
movements reflecting a
corresponding stanza from
the titular poem by Alice
Weaver Flaherty. The
piece was originally
composed as a vehicle for
virtuoso organist
Heinrich Christensen, and
later orchestrated. The
first movement introduces
the main musical
material--a five note
motive, the intervals of
which are reorganized to
create melodic and
harmonic development
throughout the piece. The
second, third, and fourth
movements depict the
brutal fight between
Jacob and the angel, and
lead one to the next
without pause. The fifth
movement is about the
post-battle scene, and
the final movement is an
epilogue, reframing the
ideas from the previous
movements. The music
elucidates various
actions from the Flaherty
poem—sand
skittering across the
desert, aggressive acts
of violence and
sensuality between the
protagonists, the beating
of wings, feathers
blowing in the wind, etc.
But beyond the music's
more literal elements,
the work is designed to
express an abstract state
of mind, a sense of
unease, and anticipation
of what is yet to come.

Eino
juhani Rautavaara
(1928-2016) was one of
Finland's internationally
most successful
composers. He made his
major breakthrough with
the Symphony No. 7, Angel
of Light, in the 1990s,
but his output includes
numerous classic operas,
concertos, chamber music
and choral works.
Over his extensive
career, he progressed
from Neo-Classicism to
strict dodecaphony to
free-tonal
Neo-Romanticism,
combining modernism with
mystical romanticism in
his later works.
According to the
composer, the role of the
composer is to be
mediator, a midwife, who
helps the music become
alive on its own terms;
Listen to what the music
wants to tell you, he
told his composition
students, sense where it
wants to go.
Rautavaara rose to great
international fame with
the success of his
Symphony No. 7, Angel of
Light (1995) powered by
the prize-winning
recording (Helsinki
Philharmonic, Segerstam,
Ondine label) later the
same year. Many
high-profile
international commissions
followed, creating yet
more prize-winning
recordings. To mark
the 25th anniversary of
the work's premiere - in
its original form as the
Bloomington Symphony - by
the Bloomington Symphony
Orchestra and conductor
David Pickett, Fennica
Gehrman is publishing an
entirely new edition of
the symphony based on all
available sources,
including the composer's
manuscript and his
markings in various
printed scores. This
is a large-sized
conductor score with
extensive analysis of the
work and its genesis.

This is the

Elgar after the final
measure of his Dream of
Gerontius. Premiered in
1900, in Great Britain
the work has long been a
standard work in the
repertoire of large
oratorio choirs. Elgar's
moving, poetic setting of
the eponymous poem by
Cardinal John Henry
Newman is about a dying
man and his journey
beyond death to God.
Before the eyes of the
listeners, a musical
image of the soul is
created which flies past
mocking demons to God
with its protecting angel
at its side, is allowed
to look at God briefly,
then faces the purgatory
confident and comforted.
The work is a real rarity
in the history of

popularity is thanks to
the suggestive, often

was commissioned by Zubin
Mehta and the Southern
California Symphony
Association after the
successful premiere of
the Concerto for Four
Percussion Soloists and
Orchestra. It was written
during the spring and
summer months of 1967.
Riots stemming from
resentment against the
racial situation in the
United States and the war
in Vietnam were occurring
throughout the country
and inevitably invaded
the composer's creative
subconscious.
Contextures, as the title
implies, was intended to
exploit various and
varying textures. As the
work progressed the
correspondence between
the fabric of music and
the fabric of society
became apparent and the
allegory grew in
significance. So I found
myself translating social
aspects into musical
techniques. Social
stratification became a
polymetric situation
where disparate groups
function together. The
conflict between the
forces of expansion and
the forces of containment
is expressed through and
opposition of tonal
fluidity vs. rigidity.
This is epitomized in the
fourth movement, where
the brass is divided into
two groups - a muted
group, encircled by the
unmuted one, which does
its utmost to keep the
first group within a
restricted pitch area.
The playful jazzy bits
(one between the first
and second movements and
one at the end of the
piece) are simply saying
that somehow in this age
of turmoil and anxiety
ways of having fun are
found even though that
fun may seem
inappropriate. The piece
is in five movements,
with an interlude between
the first and second
movements. It is scored
for a large orchestra,
supplemented by six
groups of percussion,
including newly created
roto-toms (small tunable
drums) and some original
devices, such as muted
gongs and muted
vibraphone. There is also
an offstage jazz quartet:
bass, drums, soprano
saxophone and trumpet.
The first movement begins
with a solo by the first
clarinetist which is
interrupted by
intermittent heckling
from his colleagues
leading to a
configuration of large
disparate elements. The
interlude of solo violin
and snare-drum follows
without pause. The second
movement, Prestissimo, is
a display piece of
virtuosity for the entire
orchestra. The third
movement marks a period
of repose and reflection
and calls for some
expressive solos,
particularly by the horn
and alto saxophone. The
fourth movement opens
with a rather lengthy
oboe solo, which is
threatened by large
blocks of sound from the
orchestra, against an
underlying current of
agitated energy in the
piano and percussion.
This leads to a section
in which large orchestral
forces oppose one
another, ultimately
bringing the work to a
climax, if not to a
denouement. Various
thematic elements are
strewn all over the
orchestra, resulting in
the formation of a
general haze of sound. A
transition leads to the
fifth movement without
pause. The musical haze
is pierced gently by the
offstage jazz group as if
they were attempting to
ignore and even dispel
the gloom, but a legato
bell sound enters and
hovers over both the jazz
group and the orchestra,
the latter making
statements of disquieting
finality. Two films were
conceived to accompany
portions of Contextures.
The first done by Herbert
Kosowar, was a
chemography film
(painting directly into
the film using dyes and
various implements) with
fast clips of riot
photographs. The second
was a film collage made
by photographically
abstracting details from
paintings of Reginald
Pollack. The purpose was
to invoke a non-specific
response - as in music -
but at the same time to
define the subject matter
of the piece. The films
were constructed to
correspond with certain
developments in the piece
and in no way affect the
independence and musical
flow of the piece, having
been made after the piece
was completed.

Quilting,
co-commissioned by the
BBC Symphony Orchestra
and the Los Angeles
Philharmonic, is my first
stand alone work for
orchestraand is loosely
inspired by the American
tradition of quilt
making. I composed
Quilting while living
most of last year in
Paris.During my time
there, I thought a lot
about what it means to
compose symphonic music
as a young American in
the 21st century, when so
many of the many
masterworks which are
programmed year in and
out by orchestras across
the country are European.
I considered which
artistic traditions
defined the American
19th-century. I began to
think of the American
crafts-tradition of
quilting as a foilto the
high-art tradition of
European orchestral
composition. As the score
for my new work began to
take shape, I started
thinking about the
manuscript itself as an
object, its vertical and
horizontal planes create
a kind of patterned
geometry of their own.
Visually the way a
musical score is woven
together like patchwork
brought to mind quilts
and the great American
tradition of quilting. I
imagined about how
conducting an orchestra
can feellike stitching a
piece together, or sewing
together a large number
of musical ideas and
musicians into a coherent
and transcendent whole.
Quilting was an integral
part of American
vernacular in the 18th
and 19th centuries, the
African-American quilting
tradition is especially
fascinating, and the
quilts tell the stories
of the women and
communities who made
them. The names of the
quilt patterns themselves
can have their own sense
of narrative: 'jacobs
ladder', 'drunkards
path', 'solomon's
puzzle', and (my favorite
for its relevance to this
piece) 'the road to
California. - Bryce
Dessner.

To
mark the 30th anniversary
of Mosaici Bizantini
Franco Cesarini decided
to publish this revised
version. He added a few
instruments to the
instrumentation and
completely revised the
notation. The work is now
available in large-sized
full score and
exclusively from the
composer's publishing
house. For this grand
work, Franco Cesarini was
inspired by three
byzantine mosaics, which
can be seen in churches
in Venice and Palermo. He
took the musical motives
from Gregorian chants.
The mosaics concerned
depict the following
extracts from “The
Gospel according to St.
Matthewâ€: 1. The
Nativity 2. The Temple of
Jerusalem 3. Angel of the
Resurrection This new,
revised version of this
masterpiece will delight
both the orchestra and
the audience!

This
lyrical arrangement of an
Argentinian tango is a
wonderful introduction to
the music of Astor
Piazzolla. The melody is
first introduced by the
violas and then passed
smoothly to the first
violins. Your students
will love the beautiful
harmonies, interesting
rhythms, and the variety
of dynamics, and the
piece includes many
opportunities to teach
shifting, glissando,
balance, and phrasing.
This piece is a perfect
choice for a festival or
any concert performance.
