The
simple melody of this
famous hymn is treated to
lush harmonizations and
searing emotion. In this
arrangement, the tune is
heard in its entirety
three times, each time
becoming more
impassioned. Between each
iteration of the hymn,
the composer includes
original material that
serves to bridge the
ardent treatment of the
multiple verses. After a
change of key, the climax
of the work is delayed
and extended before the
music evaporates back
into its simplest and
purest form. Amazing
Grace is a wonderful
vehicle for increasing
the musicality of the
young intermediate
band.

Canticle uses
melodic motives from St.
Francis of Assisi's hymn,
All Creatures of Our God
and King. It opens with a
festive fanfare and
proceeds to a lively A
section. The middle
section uses the motif in
a relative minor before
concluding with a
majestic celebratory
ending. All instruments
have fun, exciting and
challenging parts. An
ideal programming choice
for concert, contest or
festival
performances.

Intermediate Wind
Band/Ensemble. FJH
Developing Band.
Antiphonal Celebration is
based on the tune
Llanfair by Welsh
composer Robert Williams
(1781-1821). Llanfair
follows a simple form
(AABA), which is common
to 19th century Welsh
hymn tunes. The title
Antiphonal Celebration
describes the nature of
this piece. It is a
joyous festival work that
utilizes a technique
known as antiphony.
Antiphony occurs when the
trumpet section states a
question phrase. The band
then replies with an
answer phrase. Score for
this title: B1310S. Extra
