Every
one remembers the first
time that they saw a
snake. Though fascinating
to some and terrifying to
others, few animals are
as universally
mesmerizing. Composer
Tyler Arcari has crafted
a very fun piece making
use of auxiliary
percussion instruments to
emulate a snake's hiss or
ominous rattle. With very
strong and interesting
melodic material, and
scored to make a
developing band sound
great, this piece is sure
to be a favorite among
students. Everyone
remembers the first time
that they saw a snake.
The majority of people
have a base fear of them,
while others have a
“heebie-jeebiesâ
experience. We all
know how the great
explorer Dr. Indiana
Jones felt about snakes,
especially when he
famously fell into a
snake pit during Raiders
of the Lost Ark. However
you feel about snakes, a
pit of them certainly
sounds like an
adventure.About the
work:Snake Pit uses a lot
of auxiliary percussion
instruments. Some of
these sounds are intended
to subtly mimic the
sounds that snakes make.
The maraca in m. 4, of
course, is a
rattler’s call!
The Chinese cymbal is
intended to sound like
the “hiss†of
a not-so-friendly
serpent. The eighth-note
pattern at m. 9 is used
throughout as a
“creepyâ€
effect using dynamic
contrast so take care to
emphasize this when
present.I enjoy the gong
as a “colorâ€
instrument in the band. I
try to balance it with
the low brass. Take care
that at m. 42 the gong is
not “front-and
center†but more of
a support for the nice
accented chords in the
low brass. Also, the
trumpets can become
spaced too much here. The
accents are more for
emphasis and less
space.

All

Notes:All the While is a
bit of a personal piece
for me. I was inspired to
write it by a very
special person in my
life. It might be a
young-band piece but I
feel that it has the
capacity for great
emotion and passionate
playing as well as a
little fun in the middle.
Sometimes it is difficult
to tell people how you
feel, even if you have
known them for a long
time. I think sometimes
we say in our heads that
“I have felt this
way for a long
time,†and all the
while never being able to
put it to words.About the
work:The piece opens with
a flute and alto
saxophone duet. This
melody trades off at m.
10 with the addition of
new voices and harmonies
building in intensity all
the way to m. 28. I
personally like to use
extended phrases in this
section, though it looks
like it would just
utilize four-measure
phrases. I feel this adds
to the momentum building
in dynamic intensity.
Measure 28 is a subito
change beginning with a
prominent Timpani solo.
The following section
should be played as
lightly as possible to
avoid a lumbering feel.
In mm. 68- 70, the agogic
accents should not be
very heavy, but more
pointed in their momentum
to m. 70.Measures
70–76 should be
taken with metric liberty
bringing out all of the
moving parts in the low
brass. The low brass
really adds the
foundation of momentum
for the rest of the band
here. Measure 76 to the
end, though a repetition
of material from the
beginning, should be
played as the high point
of the piece and familiar
conclusion.

this accessible but jazzy
Trombone section feature.
There is plenty of

while the trombones get
that important time out
front. The old spiritual
The Gospel Train lends
itself beautifully to a
swing-jazz treatment and
if there's anyone who
knows how to bring the
jazz idiom to the concert
band setting it's Stephen
Bulla. If you prefer, two
Trombone soloists can be
featured while the rest
of the section plays
along on the Euphonium
part. Your band will want
to do this one again and
again, and so will you,

Notes Elephant is, of
course, inspired by the
incredible mammals of the
same name. Their
column-like legs, long
trunks, and massive
presence will never cease
to amaze; however, it's
their trumpeting that
makes them stand out as
the instrumentalists of
the animal kingdom! In
this selection, an
elephant's slow gate and
general demeanor are
represented by a
methodical tempo and
lumbering texture.
Woodwinds will enjoy the
opportunity to perform
grace notes while
Elephant also offers
exposure to flams for
young percussionists.
At m. 33 the
trumpets and horns
recreate an elephant call
after slipping brown
paper bags, or lunch-bag
mutes, over their bells
(in their bells for horn
players). For the trumpet
players, the mutes can be
enhanced with an
additional balled-up
piece of paper placed at
the bottom of the bag
prior to slipping it over
the bell. Horns should
ball up the bag itself
and experiment with
placement to create the
most realistic tones
without stopping the
instrument. While
specific pitches are
noted, making the best
elephant sounds should
prioritized. Young
students always look
forward to experimenting
with mutes, and this
selection offers an
inexpensive and creative
way to do so at a young
age. Note to the
Conductor This piece can
be used to introduce or
reinforce the finer
points of staccato
playing. While many
students know to play
these notes short in
length, they may need
reminding that they
should also be played
lightly. This also may
allow for opportunities
in emphasizing
contrasting articulation
styles that are in this
piece. Younger students
will likely need a
reasonable amount of
practice in successfully
using the lunch-bag
mutes. Allowing
additional rehearsal time
for this is
recommended. Program

Avalonâ€
Long Live the
King is a medieval
fantasy piece depicting
the Isle of Avalon where
the mystical sword
Excalibur of King Arthur
was forged. Composer
Tyler Arcari unearths a
solid piece for young
bands that is both bold
and dramatic. This piece
is sure to spark the
imagination of students
and give them strong
musical content with
which they can develop
their
musicianship. Program
Notes:Avalon–Long
live the King began its
journey as a commission
in honor of a dear friend
and mentor. David Riggs
is one of those band
directors that just seems
timeless. He is a
powerhouse with such a
stacked resume that it is
easy to forget that at
the end of the day he
enjoys taking long bike
rides with his lovely
wife and whittling a
piece of wood just as
much as being a band
director. He has touched
so many lives and
inspired so many people
in our field and beyond.
I was humbled, and
honored, when I was
contacted for the
commission. To David, I
hope that you one day
know how much you mean to
so many people, including
myself.About the
piece:The piece is
written with a little
homage to David’s
long tenure at Avalon
Middle school in Pace,
Florida. He was certainly
treated like a king as
the band director and
rightly so. It seemed
only fitting to add a
little medieval fantasy.
Avalon is a mystical
island in the world of
King Arthur where the
great sword Excalibur was
forged.The piece begins
lyrically with a slow
introduction with melodic
material. This melodic
motive is used throughout
with slight variations
depending on the
instrument voicing etc.
Care should be taken at
m. 10 that the Timpani
roll helps to bridge our
transition from an
exposed section to full
tutti. Care should be
taken so that the tempo
change at m. 19 is brisk
and avoids the low brass
turning into stomping.
Accessories like the
China cymbal and
tambourine can become
overpowering. I recommend
having students think of
these effects as
background in order to
make sure they
don’t POP out. The
dynamic changes at mm.
27-35 should be subito
similar to orchestral
dynamic changes. Avoid
unwritten crescendos in
this section. Measures
60–64 are a great
opportunity to teach
those unwritten dynamics
that make music so
enjoyable as we lead up
to the finale. It was
originally left blank for
some theatrics in the
premiere at
David’s retirement
concert so I know he
would enjoy adding some
Cholesterol as David
would say.Long Live the
King!

Avalo
n–Long Live the
King is a medieval
fantasy piece depicting
the Isle of Avalon where
the mystical sword
Excalibur of King Arthur
was forged. Composer
Tyler Arcari unearths a
solid piece for young
bands that is both bold
and dramatic. This piece
is sure to spark the
imagination of students
and give them strong
musical content with
which they can develop
their
musicianship. Program
Notes:Avalon–Long
live the King began its
journey as a commission
in honor of a dear friend
and mentor. David Riggs
is one of those band
directors that just seems
timeless. He is a
powerhouse with such a
stacked resume that it is
easy to forget that at
the end of the day he
enjoys taking long bike
rides with his lovely
wife and whittling a
piece of wood just as
much as being a band
director. He has touched
so many lives and
inspired so many people
in our field and beyond.
I was humbled, and
honored, when I was
contacted for the
commission. To David, I
hope that you one day
know how much you mean to
so many people, including
myself.About the
piece:The piece is
written with a little
homage to David’s
long tenure at Avalon
Middle school in Pace,
Florida. He was certainly
treated like a king as
the band director and
rightly so. It seemed
only fitting to add a
little medieval fantasy.
Avalon is a mystical
island in the world of
King Arthur where the
great sword Excalibur was
forged.The piece begins
lyrically with a slow
introduction with melodic
material. This melodic
motive is used throughout
with slight variations
depending on the
instrument voicing etc.
Care should be taken at
m. 10 that the Timpani
roll helps to bridge our
transition from an
exposed section to full
tutti. Care should be
taken so that the tempo
change at m. 19 is brisk
and avoids the low brass
turning into stomping.
Accessories like the
China cymbal and
tambourine can become
overpowering. I recommend
having students think of
these effects as
background in order to
make sure they
don’t POP out. The
dynamic changes at mm.
27-35 should be subito
similar to orchestral
dynamic changes. Avoid
unwritten crescendos in
this section. Measures
60–64 are a great
opportunity to teach
those unwritten dynamics
that make music so
enjoyable as we lead up
to the finale. It was
originally left blank for
some theatrics in the
premiere at
David’s retirement
concert so I know he
would enjoy adding some
Cholesterol as David
would say.Long Live the
King!

A
lively and exhilarating
new piece for beginning
bands, Effervescence
lives up to it's title,
but is so much more. It
also contains lush
harmonies, sweeping
melodic gestures
reminiscent of the
America school of
composers like
Copland. It is a
sophisticated musical
presentation, but with
limited technical
demands, making it easy
for young students, but
very musically
satisfying. Effervesce
nce is commonly known as
the act of a gas escaping
a liquid and the
“fizzingâ€
result that occurs. A
secondary definition,
however, is a show of
liveliness or
exhilaration. It is this
secondary definition that
is the inspiration for
this piece.The piece
begins with a broad,
sweeping introduction
followed by a statement
of the main theme in the
upper voices at m. 11.
The trumpets perform the
melody at m. 19, while
the upper voices perform
a countermelody which
morphs into the main idea
of the B-section that
follows at m. 27. The
lower voices restate the
main theme at m. 35 while
the upper voices provide
a sweeping harmony with a
somewhat
“Americanaâ€
feel. After a restatement
of the B-section at m.
43, a subdued section
with new material occurs
at m. 51. This pushes
into a final restatement
of the main theme at m.
59 and leads to a vibrant
conclusion followed by a
pianissimo
afterthought.

Promised
Land is a
serious-sounding, new
piece for the developing
band that sounds much
more difficult than it
plays, allowing your
students to show off
while remaining at their
ability level. The title
has its roots in the
ideals of John Humphrey
Noyes, who founded the
Oneida community in the
late 1840s. He built a
thriving agricultural and
spiritual community that
became his
“promised
land.†The music
depicts the struggles and
triumph of those first
settlers in the area, who
worked the land and
fought for their ideals
through much persecution.
Promised Land contains
all of the rhythmic
interest and memorable
motives that Sean's music
is so known for. It is
also an excellent choice
for contest/festival.
