One of the
first things that comes
to one's mind when
reading the title of
Organ Symphony No. 9
'Pathetique' by Enjott
Schneider is another work
with this epithet:
Tchaikovsky's Symphony
No. 6. And that is no
coincidence: The composer
regards his organ work as
an homage to this 'elder
sister'. While
Tchaikovsky, in a secret
programme, made out his
own life to be a struggle
and long ordeal to the
point of his suspected
suicide, Enjott Schneider
presents those hours as
the ultimate tale of woe
in which Jesus had well
and truly become human,
fatefully bearing the
pain and misery of all
people. 'Gethsemane',
'Geiselung: Ecce homo',
'Golgatha' and
'Grablegung': Maria
Magdalena' are the names
of the stages and
movements. The Greek word
'pathos' means 'strong
emotion, feeling, passion
or suffering' - in
Schneider's Organ
Symphony No. 9, this
comes true, musically, in
his inner conflict,
struggle, wrestling with
his fate, cruelty of the
crucifixion and deathly
silence.

Man that is
born of woman hath but a
short time to live is one
of the central biblical
texts dealing with the
transitoriness of human
existence. Leopold
Hofmann, Kapellmeister at
St. Stephen's Cathedral
in Vienna from 1772 to
1793, where W. A. Mozart
was his church music
assistant, also set this
strongly expressive text.
Hofmann's setting, in C
minor, offers an austere
harmony, characterized by
suspensions in a
homophonic,
through-composed
four-part vocal setting
(soloists or SATB choir),
reinforced only by two
trombones and organ
continuo. Four concise
instrumental transitional
passages between the
individual verses relieve
the pathos laden Viennese
church style of this
composition. With its
tragic air, in some
passages it closely
resembles Mozart's
Requiem K. 626. For this
first edition, the two
trombone parts are
available both in the
original clef and in alto
clef. The figured bass
has been realized so that
the piece can also be
performed without
trombones, with only
organ accompaniment. For

Orga
nist Richard Hills
introduces this reissue
of a neglected Edwardian
classic with a timely
note on
performance-style, the
composer and his works.
Varied in colour and
mood, and written with an
idiomatic command of the
instrument, these
Three Impromptus
reinforce the impression
of Coleridge-Taylor not
only as a versatile
presence on the Edwardian
scene, but also as a
composer whose music is
an enduring part of our
British musical
heritage.
Stylistically
, the Three
Impromptus bear a
closer resemblance to the
composer's theatrical
works than to those
intended for the church
or concert hall. This
light-hearted approach to
organ composition is all
the more striking when
one compares these pieces
with others written
during the same period by
Coleridge-Taylor's
colleagues and teachers,
many of whom were heavily
influenced by the German
Romantic tradition of
Josef Rheinberger and Max
Reger. As original
compositions (as opposed
to transcriptions) the
Three Impromptus
should prove an
invaluable addition to
the repertoire for
recitalists wishing to
programme sophisticated
lighter fare that has
immediate appeal.

This
volume presents 64
Pastorale compositions
for organ
(harpsichord/pianoforte)
of the 18th century from
Germany, Bohemia, Austria
and South Tyrol. Charming
melodies shaped by
natural notes, bordoun
basses, a
lyrical-cheerful or
sensitive tone - these
are some of the common
characteristics of the
works in this collection.
Several of them are
connected to the custom
of the Kindlwiegen or
cradle song. Those in
search of new discoveries
will also find a number
of first editions here.
Almost all of the pieces
can be played manualiter
and range from easy to
moderate level of
difficulty. Together,
both Pastorale volumes
display an impressive
kaleidoscope of the
different national
characteristics of the
pastorale and offer a
rich repertoire for
organists, not only at
Christmas time.

Kuhnau's
Magnificat in C major is
- apart from his Biblical
Sonatas - considered to
be his most ambitious and
best known work. However,
as recent research has
revealed, there are
indeed many other
large-scale works among
his oeuvre which are
largely presumed lost
today, apart from those
that were published as
first editions. Until
now, only insufficient or
erroneous editions of the
Magnificat have been
available, a piano
reduction has not been
available at all. Beyond
that, editor David Erler
has succeeded in tracking
down new evidence on the
authorship of four Laudes
(insertion movements for
performances over
Christmas) and to carry
out their altogether new
placement in the main
work. He was able to
prove that Bach's
Magnificat directly
succeeded Kuhnaus's work
and that the use of such
Laudes was common in
Leipzig's parish churches
and beyond.

Lemare's
compositions are uneven
in quality, but the best
are still active in the
repertoire. The Toccata
di Concerto is certainly
full of fireworks and has
the capacity to show the
abilities of a great
Organ. The upper parts
have plenty of French
toccata style, but the
theme in the pedals gives
the piece substance, as
does the romantic,
chromatic interlude in
the middle of the
work.Organ virtuoso and
composer Edwin Lemare was
the world's highest-paid
Organist at the height of
his career in the early
1900's, drawing bravos
from ctritics and the
crowds who queued around
the block to hear this
most famous of Organists.
After having served as a
church Organist for a
relativelyshort period,
he began the life of a
travelling recitalist,
beginning with a
hundred-recital tour of
the USA and Canada in
1900, a career that
continued until the stock
market crash of 1929.
Lemare was also virtuosic
in his ability to
transcribe great
Orchestral works for the
Organ, allowing audiences
in those less urban times
to hear works played live
that they might have
heard no other way.

Song
of Hope, composed by Kay
Johannsen the Kantor of
the Stiftskirche in
Stuttgart in 2016, is a
Fantasia in G minor based
on a six-measure melody.
It is improvisatory in
style and has a
melancholy basic
character. Over the
course of the work, the
melodic idea is varied
rhythmically several
times, and is heard in
the treble, tenor and
bass registers. Against a
quiet basic pulse, the
accompanying harmonies
appear in the manuals and
pedals mostly in subtly
matching rhythms,
reminiscent of a
saxophone soloist with a
discreet supporting jazz
band. The dynamic of the
piece grows from piano to
a fundamental forte, and
for the conclusion a fine
pianissimo is required.
Song of Hope is composed
for two-manual organ,
with a duration of
four-and-a-half minutes.
The expressive harmonies
and the hidden swing of
the music communicate
directly with audiences,
including those with less
musical experience.

These three
delightful preludes are
based on familiar hymn
tunes. They are written
mostly for the hands with
just a few pedal notes,
so they could be learned
by those trained mostly
on the piano. The style
is one of grace and
subtle variety as the
harmonic changes are few
and significant. The
Fughetta is of particular
interest with its
rhythmic theme. These
pieces could be used as
brief preludes or
offertories for any

On the
occasion of the
quincentenary of
Reformation Day in 2017,
the composer Enjott
Schneider thoroughly
studied Martin Luther the
individual and all his
contradictions. The
result is a brilliant,
demanding organ symphony
which is perfect for
concerts on the subject
of Reformation and Martin
Luther.The composer
describes the five
movements of the symphony
as follows:'1st
movement:Wir glauben all
an einen Gott with its
quintuplet-like beginning
is very Gregorian in
style, outlining the
range of Lutheran
emotionalism between the
Middle Ages and the
modern era. The
irrationality of faith
ultimately has priority
over any thought and
evidence. At the
beginning of the
movement, sounds of
knocking on wood remind
of the nailing of the
Ninety-Five Theses to the
doors of churches in
Wittenberg. The chorale
melody sometimes hides
with an almost rough
medieval saltarello,
referring to Luther's
robustness and vitality
with which he knew to
carry away even common
people.2nd movement:In
1530, the electoral
prince of Saxony
presented to Luther at
Coburg Castle the golden
signet ring with the
Luther rose which became
the symbol of his
theology of grace. A
white heart with black
cross is fixed on a
five-petalled rose. To
him, white is the colour
of angels and ghosts,
black stands for the pain
of crucification: The
just shall live by faith,
but by faith in the
Crucified. But the fact
that the rose and the
heart are the dominating
symbols shows how
Catholic Marian piety
remained an ingredient of
Luther's spirituality
throughout his life. In
line with the dominant
five-petal structure of
the rose, this movement
was composed, to a large
extent, in accordance
with the floating,
lyrical rhythm in 5/8
time.3rd movement:The
omnipresence of death and
dying - from the plague
and war to the
never-ending dangers of
daily life - was an
essential part of the
world view of that time.
Fears ensued that might
heighten into the
grotesque, e.g. in the
pictures of Hieronymus
Bosch. The Danse macabre
was a popular motif in
those years. Luther's
chorale Mitten wir im
Leben sind / mit dem Tod
umfangen from 1524
(Enchiridion from Erfurt)
is based on the Gregorian
chant Media vita in morte
sumus created in France
around 750 and, with its
idea of transience,
inspired a simplistic
air.4th movement:The
famous confession
delivered at the Diet of
Worms in 1521, I stand
here and can say no more.
God help me. Amen, are
not Luther's words but
the version later used as
text for a pamphlet.
However, it represents
quite plainly the
straightforwardness and
inevitability of his
mission. Musically, it
was made into a perpetuum
mobile, i.e. a dogged,
ostinato and never-ending
musical air.5th
movement:The Mighty
Fortress, on the other
hand, is one of the great
symbols of Martin Luther
which, with its shining C
major key, embodies the
Protestant ideology and
willful nature of the
Reformation unlike any
other song. Heinrich
Heine called it the
Marseille anthem of the
Reformation, Friedrich
Engels the Marseillaise
of the Peasants' Wars.
This disputability is not
thought through to the
end but rather
interrupted: With a
jubilant birdcall version
of the melody, the finale
shows a rather
chamber-music-like side
of the ideals of freedom
of Christians.'.

The cantata
is one of the few
surviving vocal works
which Wilhelm Friedemann
Bach composed during the
eighteen years which he
spent as organist and
director of music at the
Marktkirche in Halle
(1746-1764). This
cantata, published here
for the first time in
more than 250 years, was
written to introduce the
autumn sermons in 1752. A
musically and technically
demanding composition, it
consists of two
substantial choral
movements, partly
concertante and partly
polyphonic, based on two
biblical utterances. They
surround a sensitive,
while at the same time
strictly contrapuntal,
duet for soprano and alto
with basso continuo in
which God's sweet
teaching for the soul is
described as the true
manna of the faithful,
forming a link with the
sermons which are to
follow. In the
compactness of the
musical construction and
its intensity of
expression W. F. Bach was
clearly following in the
footsteps of his father
in this work. Score and
parts available
