primary source for this
edition is the largely
autograph manuscript in
the Bodleian Library.

orthography to a norm,
the capitalization of the
vocal text favours
Purcell's

original methods such as
teaching of intervals and
counterpoint through
Bartok's Microcosmos ear
training filling all
imaginable moments of
everyday life or lessons
of harmony analysis
starting with Overture to
Tristan and Musorgsky's
Catacombs. The Martinu
song Wondering Maiden was
his solo number in our
home vocal productions
which he used to sing
with amazing devotion
while his huge voice was
audible in several
neighboring
streets. My Agnus Dei
is closely bound to all
this history e.g. by
using canon and
preferring beauty of
dissonant seconds like
Bartok or quoting Martinu
and his refined
neoclassical harmony.
Father would be probably
a bit critical about the
minimalistic monotony of
the main body of the
piece. Nevertheless
firstly he would
improvise a short lecture
of history of Agnus Dei
in Requiem in Czech Music
naming by heart many
dates and all examples of
changes of order of the
traditional text by
composers. Examples would
be sung

In a note
for the planned first
edition of his Hungarian
Peasant Songs in 1914,
Bartók wrote that
âthe melodies
published here are
folksongs in the truest
sense of the word; more
precisely, peasant
songs.â Bartók
initially withdrew this
work from publication,
however, and added new
pieces to it using folk
music he had collected in
the meantime. The first
edition was only finally
published in 1920. The
Bartók scholar
László Somfai
explains the work's
complicated genesis in
his preface. The comments
at the close of this
edition include important
indications regarding
performance practice
derived from the two
recordings that the
composer made of several
of its pieces in 1927 and
1936. The musical text
here follows that of the
corresponding volume of
the Bartók Complete
Edition that is currently
in preparation. This is

four pieces group can be
considered as a study of
style. Somehow, one
wonders the capacity to
assimilate some musical
languages that that
appeared at the beginning
of the XX century, in a
very permissive tone
concept. The music in
each of them is explicit
enough to expose this
purpose. Stravinski
should be, then,
understood as an approach
to the personal features
of Stavinski and
polytonality from an
ironic and portrait
perspective. The Nocturne
is inspired on the spirit
