The text for When I Grow Up first came to me while I was teaching in Houston, Texas. I noticed that my students were becoming more and more concerned about what steps they had to take as students to secure a future for themselves decades ahead. Young people are finding themselves having to make lifelong decisions at a time where they are still in a season of exploration and wonderment. I then asked myself, What happened to discovery through play and imagination?With the help of one of my former and forever choir students, Monica Juarez, we took my original text and created illustrations of a young Coty in New Orleans, Louisiana imagining, in real time, all of the things that she could be! It was important to me that the images were of real things that I had seen growing up every day.That we are limitless and that it's only in the pressures of growing up that we can lose our creativity, I hope this text allows both singers and conductor to let their imagination take the lead and shape the journey ahead!Sing with JOY!—Coty Occasionally, when I get to visit with young people, I’ll ask, Has anyone ever asked you want to be when you grow up? All the hands go up. Children say yes, and then proceed to tell me what they want to be when they grow up. So, then I ask a follow-up question, Why on earth do you have to wait until you’re a grown-up to be somebody?!When I first read through Coty’s text, I was so moved by how clear and beautiful that message of empowerment shines through:I want to live, and that begins now. I want to be happy. Program Notes This composition for wind ensemble is partially inspired by my home town of Sebastian, specifically its location on the east coast of the state of Florida. My childhood included many quick trips to both the nearby Indian River and the beaches on the coast, so swimming and the water were integral parts of my experience growing up. This work is my musical expression of diving underwater and getting swept up by a fast current and discovering wonders beneath the surface. Dive! has two central components: a constant, driving eighth-note pulse and a main theme which is fragmented and passed around at first, but then is presented completely by the low reeds around a minute and a half into the piece. The steady eighth-note pulse reflects the swift current that a diver might follow, while the main theme represents all the wonders that might be hidden under the water. Performance Notes Ideally, the Trombone 3 part should be played on a Bass Trombone. However, if one is not available there are cues for notes that are beneath a tenor trombone's range. Make sure the vibraphone is heard clearly throughout the piece, as this particular sound is very important to the overall color of this piece. The Percussion 5 part requires two performers as some of the hits happen too quickly for one player to switch between instruments. The most important component of this work is the steady eighth-note pulse, and this pulse never changes even though the meter changes frequently to odd or uncommon time signatures; if the eighth notes remain constant and driving, the meter changes will not pose much of a problem.              .

This present edition follows a double aim: to assist music students in getting acquainted with and growing fond of the music in Bach's time on the one hand and to prepare and facilitate teaching and studying Bach's small preludes, on the other. To meet the latter objective the more difficult dances and suite movements prove to be the most suitable. It is primarily a practical edition that follows closely the original music material. The original slurring has, however, been changed due to teaching purposes and in the interests of easier study (in several cases by omitting the original or by adding the most essential phrasing and articulation slurs). Suggestions for tempo,performance, dynamics and fingering have also been given. The eventually unusual fingering in some places promotes correct phrasing, articulation. Original ornaments that would pose considerable difficulties for the students have been omitted while the ones that can eventually be omitted depending on the rechnical skill of the students have benn put in brackets. In such cases an easier solution is, however, always indicated above the original in brackets. This does not exclude naturally that students capable of properly executing the original ornaments of these works without the distortrion of the melkody arches and rhythm should not play them in their full, not simplified form. Piano students on advanced level are recommended to compare the present edition with other, original text editions which disclose ornaments in their original form. As an example two pieces of this collection have been included in the appendix in the form they appear in the original text edition. This attempt provides possibilities both for the teachers and students to assess the nature and extent of editorial alterations. The name of the composer has only been indicated in case where it could be unambiguously identified.
